The iPhone 17 base model might not be a big step up from the iPhone 16. According to a research note from analyst Jeff Pu (shared by GF Securities and reported by MacRumors), Apple is expected to reuse the same A18 chip found in the iPhone 16 for the base iPhone 17.

That chip is made using TSMC’s second-gen 3nm process (called N3E), and while it’s still efficient, it means no major boost in power is coming for the regular model.

On top of that, the iPhone 17 base model is also expected to stick with 8GB of RAM, just like the iPhone 16.

There were earlier reports that Apple might bump it up to 12GB, but it seems Apple has decided to keep it the same. This might disappoint users hoping for smoother multitasking or better long-term performance.

There are still a few small upgrades expected. The iPhone 17 could feature a 6.3-inch display, slightly larger than the 6.1-inch screen on the iPhone 16. It’s also rumored to finally get a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling, which would be a first for a non-Pro iPhone. The front camera might also jump to 24MP, doubling the resolution from the current 12MP, great news for selfie lovers and video calls.

Overall, the base iPhone 17 sounds like a mild refresh rather than a major leap forward. If you already own an iPhone 16 or even a recent iPhone 15, you may not feel the need to upgrade unless you care about the smoother screen or improved selfie cam. Apple is expected to announce the full iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025.
