It\u2019s more than just a place to live to us. It\u2019s a home, and it\u2019s just an awesome place to live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the things that make Boise special is its longstanding commitment to sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>The town\u2019s nickname, \u201cCity of Trees,\u201d is emblazoned on its logo. It has earned Tree City USA\u00ae status for 44 years and was recently recognized through the Arbor Day Foundation\u2019s Tree Cities of the World\u2122 program.<\/p>\n<p>So when city council president Elaine Clegg announced a new initiative to take Boise\u2019s tree planting to the next level, we were thrilled \u2014 and ready \u2014 to help.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-making-a-change\"><strong>Making a Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"de85aae2-0816-4283-a9e2-df78749280dd\" data-embed-button=\"media_entity_embed\" data-entity-embed-display=\"entity_reference:media_thumbnail\" data-langcode=\"en\" data-entity-embed-display-settings=\"[]\" class=\"embedded-entity\">  <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/arbordayblog.org\/sites\/arborday.org\/files\/migration_allocation\/Planting-6-1024x683.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" alt=\"Media Name: Planting-6-1024x683.jpg\" class=\"img-responsive blazy--revalidate\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvcanopy.net\/city-of-trees-challenge\">The City of Trees Challenge<\/a> aims to plant 100,000 urban trees (one tree for every Boise household) and 235,000 forest seedlings (one tree for every Boise resident) by 2030. It was launched on Arbor Day 2020 to address climate change on a local level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to provide every Boise resident with an opportunity to act on climate. Everybody feels like there\u2019s nothing they can do about it. You know, it\u2019s just too daunting. So the simple thing is to plant a tree at your house and sponsor planting a tree out in nature,\u201d said Davisson, whose organization is leading the effort alongside The Nature Conservancy in Idaho.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy investing in the health of our city and surrounding forests, we\u2019re offering an opportunity for urban and rural Idahoans to come together and build a more resilient future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In just two years, the Arbor Day Foundation has contributed 112,000 seedlings to the forest side of the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>The seedlings are being planted on sections of Boise National Forest damaged by the 2016 Pioneer Fire. High-intensity burns left its beautiful hillsides full of dead trees \u2014 but today, new sprouts of life are shooting up as far as the eye can see.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A Growing Movement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Boise National Forest is one of hundreds of forests the Arbor Day Foundation is helping restore. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arborday.org\/programs\/replanting\/?Trackingid=404#whereSection\">reforestation program<\/a> began as a small partnership with the USDA Forest Service in 1990, and today, has planted nearly 150 million trees in forests worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>This work continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. In 2019, we committed to planting 38 million trees \u2014 a 141% increase from 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Wildfires, such as the one that swept through Boise National Forest, are one of the biggest reasons forests need replanted. But there are also a host of other causes \u2014 including human activity and development, wind storms, insects, and disease.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the location or the reason, reforestation benefits us all. Our air is healthier to breathe. Our drinking water is cleaner. Temperatures are cooler and more bearable. And more carbon is removed from the air, slowing the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Focus on the Future<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"dd70895b-c9bd-4fdf-9b54-614fc671cb00\" data-embed-button=\"media_entity_embed\" data-entity-embed-display=\"entity_reference:media_thumbnail\" data-langcode=\"en\" data-entity-embed-display-settings=\"[]\" class=\"embedded-entity\">  <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/arbordayblog.org\/sites\/arborday.org\/files\/migration_allocation\/Urban-Trees-1-1024x772.jpeg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"772\" alt=\"Media Name: Urban-Trees-1-1024x772.jpeg\" class=\"img-responsive blazy--revalidate\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<p>With the forest side of the project already halfway complete, Boise is turning its focus to its 100,000 urban tree goal.<\/p>\n<p>100,000 trees will nearly double the city\u2019s canopy. Volunteers have started handing out trees at the Boise Farmer\u2019s Market, which has proved to be a great success. Organizers are also using heat and canopy mapping technology to identify which neighborhoods need trees the most.<\/p>\n<p>From energy savings to job creation, Davisson is excited about the long-term value this challenge will bring to the residents of Boise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not at the top of the national news for how many trees we planted. But I\u2019m kind of proud of that, because we don\u2019t want to just be the one with the highest number of trees. We\u2019re making sure our trees are actually surviving, thriving, and making a difference,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ambitious goals like this one are what will make a lasting change for our planet.
