But in recent years, travellers have had to deal with more than just lost luggage or flight delays. From volcanic eruptions to sudden airport shutdowns, the world has thrown a few curveballs \u2013 and understandably, some holidaymakers feel a little uneasy.<\/p>\n<p>So, what happens if something <em>does<\/em> go wrong on your trip? Can your travel insurance help if a protest breaks out, a cyber-attack grounds flights, or extreme weather hits? While travel insurance policies don\u2019t cover these things explicity, you may be able to <strong>claim for the related impact.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>For example, you may <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.howdeninsurance.co.uk\/is-travel-insurance-changing-to-match-our-climate\/?int=9406&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=blog\">not be covered for a heatwave,<\/a> specifically but <strong>your policy should cover you for any illness as a result, <\/strong>if you had to have emergency care. Some insurers <strong>only cover specific events<\/strong> such as strikes, mechanical breakdowns, or adverse weather, while others provide broader coverage for alternative travel and accommodation arrangements. You may find that exclusions apply, so <strong>document everything<\/strong> you can and <strong>keep receipts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Some insurers <strong>exclude costs that can be recovered from airlines, travel agents, or compensation schemes like ATOL<\/strong>, whereas other policies may offer travel disruption cover if no suitable alternative transport is provided within a set timeframe. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.howdeninsurance.co.uk\/the-best-travel-money-options-cash-vs-card\/?int=9406&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=blog\">You may be reimbursed<\/a> for alternative transport if a significant delay (around 6-12 hours) occurs, while others only step in if the delay exceeds 24 hours.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about nervous travellers?<\/h2>\n<p>But here\u2019s the catch: <strong>if you cancel a trip just because you\u2019re feeling uneasy, you usually won\u2019t be reimbursed<\/strong>, unless the Foreign, Commonwealth &amp; Development Office (FCDO) has issued official advice against travel to that location. \u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This is a key point. If they advise <em>against all but essential travel<\/em> to your destination and you go anyway, your insurance might be <strong>invalidated<\/strong>\u2014and you could be left footing the bill.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top travel insurance tips:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Book early and cover early<\/strong> \u2013 Get<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.howdeninsurance.co.uk\/should-you-travel-without-insurance\/?int=9406&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=blog\"> travel insurance as soon as you book your trip,<\/a> so you\u2019re protected if something happens before you go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Understand your policy<\/strong> \u2013 Read the fine print or speak to your broker. If something\u2019s not included (like natural disaster cover), ask if you can add it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep receipts and documentation<\/strong> \u2013 If your plans are disrupted, you\u2019ll need proof to support any claim.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t cancel without checking<\/strong> \u2013 If you\u2019re nervous about travelling, speak to your insurer first.
