In a June 23, 2016 statement, they wrote: <em>\u201cScientists of <a href=\"https:\/\/community.mars-one.com\/blog\/food-for-mars-cycling-to-mars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wageningen University &amp; Research<\/a> have just brought life on Mars one step closer. The research group, supported by Mars One, found that vegetables growing on Martian soil are safe to eat for humans.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(This video is no longer available)<\/p>\n<p>Using soil simulants that approximate the martian soil, the science team grew 10 different crops in greenhouses in the Netherlands. Four of those crops\u2014radishes, peas, rye, and tomatoes\u2014have been harvested and tested for unsafe levels of heavy metal contamination. <em>\u201cNo dangerous levels of aluminium, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, arsenic, cadmium, chrome, nickel and lead were found \u2013 the four crops are safe to eat.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hollywood Gets Real and Delivers a Blockbuster Movie In the Process<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking of growing food on mars, what about the recent Ridley Scott film, <em>\u201cThe Martian\u201d<\/em>? How well does the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.astronomy.com\/bonus\/martian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science adhere to reality<\/a>? Pretty darn well, as it turns out. It\u2019s an amazing story how this book even got published and from its sudden and totally unexpected success, then made into a movie.<\/p>\n<p>In an ironic twist of life imitating art, before <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wageningenur.nl\/en\/activity\/Wageningen-Mars-research-at-The-Martian-in-CineMec-.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a lecture<\/a> at the Wageningen University on food production in space, they showed the movie to their students.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a trailer for the few who may not have seen it yet:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio  is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes.
