But in recent decades, unchecked urbanization and ecological neglect had rendered the lake a shadow of its former self. Thick carpets of aquatic weeds choked the waters, degrading its beauty, threatening biodiversity, and dampening the region\u2019s tourism-dependent economy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maninder Singh<\/strong>, an entrepreneur from Uttar Pradesh, saw in this crisis a rare opportunity. During a wedding anniversary trip to the region, Singh was struck not only by the lake\u2019s breathtaking potential but by the devastation caused by the rampant growth of lake weed. That visit sparked a journey that would lead him to establish <i>Clean \u2018Effen\u2019 Tech<\/i> (CET), a social enterprise that today leads an innovative ecological restoration project with profound environmental and economic benefits.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cThese aquatic plants had accumulated near Dal Lake over the years, creating an unsightly mess and posing a threat to the local ecosystem,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Singh told <a href=\"https:\/\/thebetterindia.com\/418854\/maninder-singh-cef-group-dal-lake-weed-conversion-organic-manure-kashmir-farmers\/\">The Better India<\/a>. The scale of the problem was daunting, but Singh was determined to address it holistically.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing from his background in technology and entrepreneurship, Singh spent the next eight years building a sustainable value chain: from weed harvesting and processing to organic fertilizer production and distribution. <em><strong>\u201cOur project is designed to process up to 70,000 [metric] tonnes of lake weed each year, which yields between 20,000 to 22,000 tonnes of organic manure,\u201d<\/strong> <\/em>he said. <em><strong>\u201cThis large-scale effort is expected to lead to an annual reduction of around 50,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_236218\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-236218\" style=\"width: 730px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-236218\" src=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dal-Lake2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dal-Lake2.jpeg 730w, https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dal-Lake2-400x225.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dal-Lake2-640x360.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/trueactivist.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Dal-Lake2-255x144.jpeg 255w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-236218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Week<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The weeds are mechanically harvested from the lake and taken to CET\u2019s processing facility. There, the water is drained and treated for pollutants such as heavy metals before being safely released. The weed biomass is then dried, shredded, enriched with nutrients, and pulverized into organic fertilizer. Not only is the final product competitively priced\u201425% cheaper than chemical fertilizers imported from states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana\u2014but it also comes with a range of ecological benefits.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cWe have made an impact by enriching over 4,400 acres of land, improving soil health, and supporting sustainable agriculture practices,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Singh said. The use of organic manure has enhanced crop yields, restored soil nutrient levels, and decreased dependence on synthetic inputs. For local farmers, the benefits are both economic and environmental.<\/p>\n<p>But the ripple effects of Singh\u2019s project extend beyond agriculture. In 2024 alone, CET removed 14,800 metric tonnes of decaying lake weed\u2014material that, if left to rot, would have fouled the air during the summer months, discouraging tourists and worsening local living conditions. In this way, Singh\u2019s initiative also supports the tourism industry, which has long been a cornerstone of the region\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, CET has created new employment opportunities for the local population, particularly in harvesting and processing. The community is increasingly seeing the lake not as a liability but as a resource to be stewarded.<\/p>\n<p>Singh\u2019s model is now drawing interest from other Indian states. He plans to expand to Odisha and Rajasthan, both of which are home to freshwater lakes suffering from similar invasive weed problems. <em><strong>\u201cAnywhere there\u2019s a beautiful freshwater body overrun with aquatic plants, we hope to bring in Clean \u2018Effen\u2019 Tech to clean it the eff up,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Singh said with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>In a country grappling with both environmental degradation and rural economic distress, Singh\u2019s project offers a rare blend of ecological innovation and grassroots empowerment.
