Dandy Burger in Espa\u00f1ola<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Back in my halcyon youth as a multi-sport athlete at Pe\u00f1asco High School (when I could consume half a million calories a meal at no detriment to my then svelte physique), Dandy Burger in beautiful downtown Espa\u00f1ola was a frequent dining destination\u2013particularly after the then \u201cnot so mighty\u201d Pe\u00f1asco Panthers suffered a loss (and there were many of them).\u00a0 On the rare occasion in which we actually won a game (usually over Escalante), our coaches would \u201ctreat us\u201d to chicken fried steak at some \u201cfancy\u201d restaurant. We didn\u2019t have the heart to tell them we preferred Dandy Burger.\u00a0 Frankly, I still do.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to resist stopping for a green chile cheeseburger and a bit of nostalgia every time we drive through Espa\u00f1ola.<\/p>\n

Dandy Burger\u2019s Famous Sign<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The food at Dandy Burger was never quite good enough to lessen the pain of a loss then and is even less capable of doing so today when the losses I experience are more costly (as in a poor performing 401K\u2026or is that now 4.1K). Still, I always have a contented sense of nostalgia when I see the familiar anthropomorphic burger that symbolizes this popular neighborhood hangout. Dandy Burger\u2019s \u201cmascot\u201d is a cartoonish, mustachioed and chapeau-wearing, burger-headed anthropomorph resembling Jeeves the butler on the restaurant\u2019s signage. The burger\u2019s entire countenance (resembling the ubiquitous smiley face) occupies the top half of the bun. It\u2019ll put a smile on your face, especially if it portends a meal.<\/p>\n

The Counter Where You Place Your Order<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got a buddy in the business<\/em>\u201d has become a familiar catchphrase for those of us who don\u2019t fast-forward through commercials. \u00a0Those now immortal words are uttered by Buddy Espinoza, general manager of Toyota of Santa Fe and Enchanted Mazda, also in Santa Fe. \u00a0Should you visit Dandy Burger in Espa\u00f1ola, you might just hear those words from behind the counter. \u00a0That\u2019s because Buddy Espinoza purchased the fifty year old restaurant in June, 2022.\u00a0 \u00a0 Espinoza, a La Mesilla resident, has upgraded signage and the dining room.\u00a0 Picnic tables and take-out service were also improved.\u00a0 The menu, which includes burgers, tacos and burritos, is largely unchanged; sadly that means the attrocious spelling \u201cchili\u201d is all over the menu.\u00a0 \u00a0Dandy also added ice cream by the scoop, including hot fudge sundaes and banana splits.<\/p>\n

One of Two Dining Rooms<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Rio Arriba county, and in particular Espa\u00f1ola, is home to some of the best green chile cheeseburgers in New Mexico. Dandy Burger\u2019s offerings compete with both the Stop and Eat<\/a><\/strong> burgers less than a quarter mile away and the LotaBurger about a mile north. All three can quell hunger far better than the Pe\u00f1asco Panthers defense of days gone by could stymie their opponents.\u00a0 Dandy is no one-trick-pony.\u00a0 It\u2019s got a surprisingly versatile menu that includes ten vegetarian items, including a bowl of beans, an old-fashioned New Mexico favorite.\u00a0 The menu lists several \u201cMexican\u201d items that include a Tewa taco and homemade \u201cchili.\u201d\u00a0 (I don\u2019t know which bothers me more\u2013the horrific mispelling \u201cchili\u201d or labeling items as \u201cMexican\u201d when they\u2019re New Mexican.<\/p>\n

True to its name, Dandy serves burgers, maybe the most popular item on the menu after all these decades.\u00a0 Burgers are listed as \u201cchar-broiled\u201d though the charbroiled taste isn\u2019t as prevalent as charbroiled burgers in Oklahoma.\u00a0 There are essentially only four burgers on the menu\u2013Dandy Burger, Jim Dandy, Jungle Jim (and its female counterpart The Jungle Jane), but all are available with double-meat patties as well as in combination with fries (or onion rings) and a large beverage.\u00a0 Dandy also offers a number of specialty sandwiches: fish sandwich, tuna on toast, hot dog and others.<\/p>\n

26 May 2025<\/strong>:\u00a0 Most of my memories as a Pe\u00f1asco Panther visiting Dandy Burger are of the standard \u201cDandy Burger<\/em><\/strong>\u201d or the more prodigious \u201cBig Jim Dandy<\/em><\/strong>\u201d with double meat.\u00a0 Both are very good burgers, particularly if ameliorated with green chile. These burgers are dressed with unfailingly crisp onion, lettuce, pickle and mustard but you can pretty much have them any way you want. The meat patties are obviously not hand-formed and fresh ground, but they\u2019re charbroiled to perfection\u2013especially if you like your burger well done (no pink whatsoever).\u00a0 The green chile is neon green and only of medium piquancy. All other ingredients are fresh and delicious though at times I\u2019ve wished for salad dressing, so profuse is the lettuce on each burger.\u00a0 If you want piquancy on your burger, ask for a couple of plastic tubs of salsa.\u00a0 Dandy Burger\u2019s salsa<\/strong><\/em> is the most piquant item offered by the restaurant.\u00a0 It\u2019ll enliven your burger.<\/p>\n

Another View of the Big Jim Dandy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

26 May 2025<\/strong>: Even better than Dandy Burger\u2019s burgers are the standard hard-shelled tacos<\/em><\/strong>, sloppy (cheese, lettuce, chopped tomato) concoctions which include a beans and meat mixture with a piquant bite. You don\u2019t necessarily need the plastic tubs of hot sauce to heat up these beauties; they\u2019ve got some bite on their own. My Kim loves the tacos sans piquancy.\u00a0 They\u2019re crispy yet don\u2019t fall to pieces when you bite into them.\u00a0 The ground beef is well-done.<\/p>\n

Chicharrones are one of the favorite \u201ccondiments\u201d in Northern New Mexico where these pork crackling cubes are used on almost everything but dessert.\u00a0 They\u2019re especially good on burritos.\u00a0 Perhaps nowhere in the Land of Enchantment will you find a burrito quite as engorged with chicharrones as at Dandy Burger where each tortilla encased treasure is packed with them.\u00a0 Alas, some of the chicharrones are more fatty than they are meaty, but that\u2019s pretty much par for the course.<\/p>\n

Three Beef Tacos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

3 November 2019<\/strong>:\u00a0 Several sources credit Texas for having \u201cinvented\u201d the taco salad, one source calling it \u201ca fusion of the Mexican taco with the American salad<\/em>.\u201d Although creators of the first taco salads probably omitted the ubiquitous taco shell, eventually someone figured out the taco salad could be made even better by fashioning a \u201cbowl\u201d from a tortilla shell.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way Dandy Burger serves its taco salad<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 As a serving vessel, the tortilla bowl does its job well, holding in a plethora of ingredients (pinto beans, shredded cheese, lettuce, chopped tomatoes, hamburger meat).\u00a0 Though you can break off and eat portions of the bowl, my preference would be for separate tortilla chips.\u00a0 Still, this is a filling and fulfilling taco salad.<\/p>\n

Dandy Burger\u2019s shakes are always cold, a wonderful blessing on a sweltering summer day when Espa\u00f1ola\u2019s pavement is baking everything on the road.<\/p>\n
