Reporter Deena Zaru has the story for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/minneapolis-group-works-preserve-2020-protest-art-after\/story?id=122107055\">ABC<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI felt this enormous weight to be the one to decide to protect these stories and to make sure that the movement continues through the preservation of this art,\u201d Kelly told ABC News, reflecting on her five-year journey. \u201cI feel an enormous sense of pride having the foresight to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly said that since 2021, Memorialize the Movement has been \u201cactivating\u201d the 2020 murals via exhibits to ensure that Floyd\u2019s legacy is not forgotten. Much of that art was displayed at a weekend Justice for George event in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call ourselves a living archive,\u201d she said, explaining that at the events, they not only display the art from 2020 but also commission artists to create new murals on blank panels. There are also workshops to encourage new and continuing art and activism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a movement where we are empowering people through art to understand that they have a voice, understand their agency, and learn how to protect and preserve their own stories and histories in real time,\u201d Kelly said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2023\u00a0Military museums across the United States are literal echo chambers of nationalistic propaganda, and for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2025\/05\/memorial-day-military-museums-air-shows-july-pentagon-vintage-aircraft-wwii-wwi-vietnam-korea-weapons-fatalities-american-heritage-collings-foundation\/\">Mother Jones<\/a><\/em>, journalist Jasper Craven takes us on a tour through their history:<\/p>\n<aside>\n<div class=\"newspack-popup-container newspack-popup hidden  newspack-inline-popup      \" role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" style=\"background-color:#FFFFFF;color:#000\" id=\"id_882262\" data-segments=\"64266,64249\" data-frequency=\"0,0,3,day\" data-suppression=\"ActiveCampaign\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\"><strong>Get the latest art news, reviews and opinions from Hyperallergic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There may be no stronger tool for romanticizing America\u2019s war machine than museums like this one. Museums, after all, are among the nation\u2019s\u00a0most trusted\u00a0institutions, research shows, for liberals and conservatives alike. As such, the Department of Defense has created, per its 2009\u00a0report\u00a0to Congress on the topic, a stable of 93 military museums that at the time were costing taxpayers $94 million a year to operate. (Subsequent numbers were unavailable, and a 2014 law\u00a0explicitly repealed\u00a0the military\u2019s financial reporting requirements for military museums.) This soft propaganda network frames the military\u2019s work valiantly and helps attract new troops\u2014the 2009 report, for example, noted that the Museum of Aviation at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia is \u201cconsistently used as a successful tool\u201d for recruiters.<\/p>\n<p>The brass also provides exceptional support\u2014and vintage firepower\u2014to hundreds of private military museums, many of them pet projects of the ultra-wealthy. Major collectors include a Microsoft co-founder, a member of the Walmart dynasty, and the founder of the Jelly Belly company, who tried (and failed) to modify one of his tanks to fire jelly beans. The Collings stockpile was amassed through the largesse of Rob\u2019s father, Bob, who invented and manufactured the first standalone\u00a0electronic cash register.<\/p>\n<p>The various museums purport to provide accurate depictions of war\u2014yet even the most clear-eyed exhibits cannot begin to effectively capture the thrumming violence of conflict. \u201cWar museums are like cloud chambers in particle physics,\u201d Yale University history professor Jay Winter, now emeritus, argued in a\u00a0paper. \u201cThey represent the traces and trajectories of collisions that happened a long time ago. They never describe war; they only tell us about its footprints on the map of our lives.\u201d They also tell us how their founders\u2014and funders, including the US government\u2014would have us remember our battles.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2023\u00a0On <a href=\"https:\/\/hazelkatz.substack.com\/p\/hasbara-feminism\">Substack<\/a>, filmmaker Hazel Katz takes a closer look at the problematic ideology at the center of the work of Israeli artist Ruth Patir, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/903096\/israeli-artist-pausing-venice-biennale-show-doesnt-go-far-enough-critics-say\/\">criticized<\/a> for pausing her show at the last Venice Biennale in what many saw as a performative gesture:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In one video piece, Patir dunks on Moshe Dayan by force-feminizing him and reappropriates the artifacts he stole from Gaza because \u201cbeing nostalgic about the past is a privilege that\u2019s only relevant for some and not for all.\u201d Patir often appears in press materials and photos wearing a shirt with the slogan: \u201cAbuse of Power Comes as No Surprise,\u201d from a 1982 Jenny Holzer\u00a0billboard series. In recent years, this slogan has been appropriated by imperial white feminists of the #nevertrump and #metoo movements, whose selective outrage extends solely to bourgeois survivors of patriarchal violence. (Holzer, too, has recently\u00a0come out\u00a0as a genocidal imperialist.) In 2016,\u00a0Indecline, an art collective exhibited\u00a0<em>the Emperor Has No Balls<\/em>, a series of statues of Donald Trump with a very small penis and no balls. Patir\u2019s 3D renderings of Moshe Dayan depict an emasculated man with a tiny penis, alternatively in drag and naked. Patir explains that she is retaking power from Dayan who represents \u201cthe archetype of the Israeli man,\u201d which we are supposed to understand as a violent misogynist.<\/p>\n<p>Boyarin explains that the masculine Jewish man is a modern zionist invention, connected to the writings of Theodor Herzl, the founder of zionism. In 1897 Herzl published\u00a0an essay,\u00a0<em>Mauschel,\u00a0<\/em>in his newspaper Die Welt. The first line reads: \u201cMauschel is an anti-Zionist.\u201d Mauschel is a derogatory German word that comes from the yiddish diminutive for Moses \u2013\u00a0<em>moyshele<\/em>. According to Harry Zohn, the translator of Herzl\u2019s essay, Mauschel came to describe a basic antisemitic stereotype of a Jewish man in 17th century central Europe, connoting an unassimilated working-class Jew who spoke German with a yiddish accent, or \u201ca haggling Jewish trader.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2023\u00a0Apparently, Walt Whitman walked so selfies could run. For the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/like-todays-selfie-takers-walt-whitman-used-photography-to-curate-his-image-but-ended-up-more-lost-than-found-256195\">Conversation<\/a><\/em>, scholar Trevin Corsiglia examines the poet\u2019s keen use of commissioned photos to shape his public image:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>As Whitman biographer Justin Kaplan notes, no other writer at the time \u201cwas so systematically recorded or so concerned with the strategic uses of his pictures and their projective meanings for himself and the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poet jumped at the opportunity\u00a0to have his photo taken. There is, for instance,\u00a0the famous portrait\u00a0of the young, carefree poet that was used\u00a0as the frontispiece\u00a0for the first edition of \u201cLeaves of Grass.\u201d Or the\u00a01854 photograph\u00a0of a bearded and unkempt Whitman likely captured by Gabriel Harrison.\u00a0Or the 1869 image\u00a0of Whitman smiling lovingly at\u00a0Peter Doyle, the poet\u2019s intimate friend and probable lover.<\/p>\n<p>Some social scientists have argued that today\u2019s selfies can aid in the search for one\u2019s \u201cauthentic self\u201d \u2013\u00a0figuring out who you are and understanding what makes you tick.<\/p>\n<p>Other researchers have taken a less rosy view of the selfie, warning that snapping too many can be a sign of\u00a0low self-esteem\u00a0and can, paradoxically,\u00a0lead to identity confusion, particularly if they\u2019re taken to seek external validation.<\/p>\n<p>Whitman spent his life searching for what he termed the \u201cMe myself\u201d or the \u201creal Me.\u201d Photography provided him another medium, besides poetry, to carry on this search. But it seems to have ultimately failed him.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2023\u00a0French historian Jean-Pierre Filiu spoke with <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/international\/article\/2025\/05\/26\/historian-returning-from-gaza-the-most-shocking-thing-is-the-gap-with-the-outside-world-s-perception_6741704_4.html#\">Le Monde<\/a><\/em>\u2018s editorial team about his visits to Gaza over the last year, identifying the jarring disconnect between the ongoing genocide and the rest of the world\u2019s perception:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Menton: What event shocked you the most during your time in Gaza?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was in Gaza from December 19, 2024, to February 21, 2025 \u2013 a full month of open hostilities, plus two days of truce. The paradox is that the most violent days were those preceding the truce coming into effect, on January 19. The Israelis intensified the bombings, sometimes very close to where I was staying, while the outside world had been celebrating the announcement of a ceasefire since January 15. The most shocking thing I experienced is the gap between the ordeals experienced in Gaza and the outside world\u2019s perception.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Empathie: How are orphans being cared for in Gaza at the moment? Is there any estimate of their numbers?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The tragedy of Gaza\u2019s orphans is one of the worst disasters unfolding within the broader tragedy of the besieged enclave. The number of orphans is the subject of much debate due to the collapse of the health system and the disappearance of entire families, sometimes with only one surviving child. The society, which I once knew to be so protective within its family structures, has itself collapsed under the weight of widespread slaughter and repeated displacements. Wounded orphans are left abandoned in hospitals with no relatives, not even distant ones, coming to claim them. Bands of street children haunt public dumps, scavenging nylon and wood to resell as fuel.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2023\u00a0Ng\u0169g\u0129 wa Thiong\u2019o, anticolonial Kenyan novelist and author, has died at age 87. Wedaeli Chibelushi writes about his complex legacy and work for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/ce999kwxn1ro\">BBC<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>During a writers\u2019 conference at Makerere, Ng\u0169g\u0129 shared the manuscript for his debut novel with revered Nigerian author Chinua Achebe.<\/p>\n<p>Achebe forwarded the manuscript to his publisher in the UK and the book, named Weep Not, Child, was released to critical acclaim in 1964. It was the first major English-language novel to be written by an East African.<\/p>\n<p>Ng\u0169g\u0129 swiftly followed up with two more popular novels, A Grain of Wheat and The River Between. In 1972, the UK\u2019s Times newspaper said Ng\u0169g\u0129, then aged 33, was \u201caccepted as one of Africa\u2019s outstanding contemporary writers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Then came 1977 \u2013 a period that marked a huge change in Ng\u0169g\u0129\u2019s life and career. For starters, this was the year he became Ng\u0169g\u0129 wa Thiong\u2019o and shed his birth name, James. Ng\u0169g\u0129 made the change as he wanted a name free of colonial influence.<\/p>\n<p>He also dropped English as the primary language for his literature and vowed to only write in his mother tongue, Kikuyu.<\/p>\n<p>He published his last English language novel, Petals of Blood, in 1977.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2023\u00a0A new study found that some types of hummingbirds have been rapidly evolving to live alongside humans, Jorge Garay explains for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/hummingbirds-are-evolving-to-adapt-to-life-with-humans\/\">Wired<\/a><\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Populations of these hummingbirds expanded northward in California at the same time as the establishment of urban centers where feeding could take place. The researchers discovered that the population density of\u00a0<em>Calypte anna<\/em>\u00a0has also increased over time, and found that this appears to be linked to the proliferation of feeding fountains and nectar-producing eucalyptus trees, both of which were introduced to the region by humans.<\/p>\n<p>These morphological changes to the hummingbirds have occurred rapidly. According to the study,\u00a0<em>Calypte anna<\/em>\u00a0populations in 1930 were very different from those in 1950, when the birds\u2019 bills had already begun to grow.
