Introducing Hilary Lewis, Marketing Director, Winchester Corporate Finance. She’s your self proclaimed ‘go to girl when it comes to business funding.’ As a twice exited ex business owner, Hilary understands what businesses face on a day to day level.

Her experience and knowledge spans Management, Marketing, Branding, Social Media, Communications, Digital Media, and Business Strategy.

How did you get into the profession?

By accident, like most people. I’d sold two businesses and was busy being a mum when I was introduced to a business finance brokerage after my youngest started school full time. I realised very quickly that most SMEs were getting completely lost in the jargon. So I stayed, and built a marketing approach that made the finance world make sense.

What’s the biggest career hurdle you’ve overcome?

Joining an industry where I had no formal background, no network, and no idea what an invoice finance facility was. But I listened, learned fast, and then started challenging the way things had always been done, especially how we speak to clients.

What do you see as key trends for accountants in the coming year?

Clients are expecting more, and rightly so. There’s a shift towards proactive advice, funding support, and commercial guidance. The accountants who embrace that and communicate clearly will stand out.

What underrated tip would you give someone looking for business funding?

Don’t just focus on rate. Understand why you’re borrowing and what the return is, not just the cost. And be prepared to explain your numbers like a human, not a spreadsheet.

Why do you think it’s important that the industry attend Accountex London?

Because you can’t innovate in isolation. Accountex is a chance to learn, connect, and see what’s actually working in the real world, not just in theory.
