Your source code never leaves your environment unless you choose to share it, as the CLI operates locally, according to OpenAI. In this article, I will show you how to install and use OpenAI\u2019s Codex CLI locally.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-codex-cli\">Why Codex CLI?<\/h2>\n<p>Codex CLI is designed for developers who are comfortable in the terminal and want ChatGPT-level reasoning combined with the ability to run code, manage files, and iterate, all while keeping version control intact. In short, it\u2019s chat-driven development that understands and executes your code. Some of its key features are: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Zero Setup<\/strong>: No configuration required, just bring your OpenAI API key, and you\u2019re ready to go!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Minimal Requirements<\/strong>: You\u2019ll need Node.js (v22+) and npm (v10+), but overall, the setup is quick and lightweight.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Full Auto Mode<\/strong>: Operates in a directory sandbox with the network disabled, ensuring your data remains private and secure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multimodal Support<\/strong>: Send in screenshots or diagrams, Codex CLI can interpret and replicate the requirements shown in your images.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open Source<\/strong>: The tool is completely open-source, so you can explore the codebase and even contribute to its development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please note that Codex CLI is an ongoing experimental project. Proposes edits &amp; shell commands, but <em>requires your approval<\/em> before making changes or executing commands.<\/td>\n<td>Safe exploration, code reviews, learning a codebase.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Auto Edit<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>Read <strong>and<\/strong> write files automatically. Still asks before running shell commands.<\/td>\n<td>Refactoring or repetitive edits where you want to keep an eye on side-effects.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Full Auto<\/strong><\/td>\n<td>Read, write, and execute commands autonomously inside a sandboxed, network-disabled environment scoped to the current directory.<\/td>\n<td>Longer tasks like fixing a broken build or prototyping features while you grab a coffee.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sandboxing-details\">Sandboxing Details<\/h2>\n<p><strong>macOS 12+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Codex CLI uses Apple Seatbelt (<code>sandbox-exec<\/code>) to sandbox commands.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most of the filesystem is placed in a <strong>read-only jail<\/strong>, with a few exceptions such as <code>$PWD<\/code>, <code>$TMPDIR<\/code>, and <code>~\/.codex<\/code>, which remain writable.<\/li>\n<li>By default, outbound network access is completely blocked\u2014even if a child process tries to use <code>curl<\/code>, it will fail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Linux<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sandboxing is not enabled by default. OpenAI recommends using Docker for sandboxing.<br \/>Codex CLI runs inside a lightweight container image, with your repository mounted in the same location for read\/write access. A custom <code>iptables<\/code>\/<code>ipset<\/code> firewall script blocks all egress except access to the OpenAI API. This ensures repeatable, predictable execution without requiring root access on the host. To enable this, use the <code>run_in_container.sh<\/code> script to configure the sandbox environment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-codex-mini-latest\">New codex-mini-latest<\/h2>\n<p>codex-mini-latest is a fine-tuned version of o4-mini specifically for use in Codex CLI. It verifies each step, applies modifications only where necessary, and consistently aims to find the best possible solution. However, the process can be noticeably slower compared to making similar changes manually using tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.analyticsvidhya.com\/blog\/2025\/03\/vibe-coding-with-cursor-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cursor<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.analyticsvidhya.com\/blog\/2025\/03\/vibe-coding-with-windsurf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Windsurf<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this is just my personal experience, your results may vary depending on the domain or tech stack you\u2019re working with. In this case, the codebase involved recently updated libraries, which Codex struggled with.
