Working out how much you should charge as a personal trainer can be difficult, especially if you\u2019re newly qualified or relatively inexperienced.\u00a0<\/p>\n

You want to avoid underselling yourself, but at the same
\ntime, you don\u2019t want to set your prices so high that you miss out on potential new
\nclients.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a personal trainer, you\u2019ll need to consider a few
\nthings when working out your pricing, from projecting your expected income to
\nassessing the competition in your area. Thankfully, we\u2019ve put together a handy
\nguide to help you decide.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve also chatted to a few experienced personal trainers to get their valuable expertise.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

How much should personal trainers charge?<\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Location<\/h3>\n

Where you\u2019re based can greatly impact how much you can realistically
\ncharge as a PT.<\/p>\n

In big cities like London, personal trainers can charge up
\nto \u00a3200 for a one-to-one session, whereas some trainers may charge as little as
\n\u00a315 per hour outside the capital.<\/p>\n

The average hourly cost<\/span><\/a> of a personal trainer in the UK is between \u00a330 and \u00a350.<\/strong> However, finding out what other local personal trainers are charging for their services will give you a good idea of the going rates in your area.<\/p>\n

Tim Walker, the founder of Evolve Fitness<\/span><\/a> in London, said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI know some PTs who work with some of the top lawyers in London, and they charge \u00a37-800 per session because they can\u2014because people around there will pay it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy advice to other PTs, though, is\u2014scout the area, look at the demographics and set your price from there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Demand<\/h3>\n
\"how<\/figure>\n

The higher the demand for your services, the more you can
\nincrease your hourly cost as a personal trainer.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re unlikely to be short of work if your target customer
\nbase is celebrities, footballers, and actors. These people not only pride
\nthemselves on their appearance, but most also don\u2019t work traditional 9-5 jobs
\nand have plenty of money to spare.<\/p>\n

Walker said: \u201cIf there are thousands of people in your area
\nwho exercise regularly and can easily afford it, you can set your prices
\nhigher.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just need to be realistic about how in-demand you
\nare\u2014don\u2019t just think that you should charge \u00a3100 per session because some
\nfitness \u2018guru\u2019 has said you can make this much.\u201d<\/p>\n

Good marketing is a great way to increase the demand for
\nyour services. This can involve everything from managing your website and
\nsocial media channels to\u00a0advertising in local media.<\/p>\n

Ollie Lawrence<\/span><\/a>, a Manchester-based personal trainer who has previously trained the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team, said: \u201cAlways work on your website. When potential clients are searching online, your website is the first impression they\u2019ll have when looking to train with you, so make sure your website reflects what your business does.\u201d<\/p>\n

Your website can also contain testimonials<\/span><\/a> from past or current clients, as this is another good way of demonstrating to prospects how you\u2019ve helped others.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Experience<\/h3>\n
\"how<\/figure>\n

Once you\u2019ve gained more PT experience and expanded your
\nskillset, don\u2019t be afraid to increase how much you charge as a personal
\ntrainer.<\/p>\n

Walker said: \u201cExperience brings confidence, and confidence
\nallows you to charge more for your services. If you\u2019re prepared to be patient
\nand hone your skills, you\u2019ll gain the experience you need to charge a higher
\nfee.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t do what I\u2019ve seen some PTs do and act like the
\nworld\u2019s best salesperson from day one because you\u2019ll reach your ceiling very
\nquickly and fade away. You may also come across as if you don\u2019t care about
\nproviding your clients a unique, good-quality service.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Competition<\/h3>\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n

It\u2019s more than just your skillset, specialisms, and
\nexperience you need to consider when deciding how to price your PT services.<\/p>\n

You also need to assess your competition. What type of service do they provide? What level of service do they provide, and is it more or less advanced than yours<\/span><\/a>?<\/p>\n

We spoke to Darren Craven, a personal trainer based in Stockport, who warns against setting your fees high initially, especially if you don\u2019t have the experience or advanced qualifications to support your perceived value.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cAs a new PT, it\u2019s tempting to jump into a high
\npricing strategy to cover all your overheads, gym rental fees, uniform, travel,
\netc. But unfortunately, clients aren\u2019t going to pay huge sums for a trainer
\nwith no experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started training, I stuck to a competitive pricing
\nstrategy, but I made sure I offered clients something that others didn\u2019t, so
\nthey had a reason to choose me over others. For me, this was the option of
\nonline fitness training to supplement their weekly sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walker added: \u201cDon\u2019t charge the most in your area unless
\nyou\u2019re the most qualified, experienced, and in-demand PT in that area. You\u2019d
\nrather charge \u00a330 and pick up some clients than charge \u00a360 and get nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the same time, don\u2019t set your price too low to undercut the competition because you\u2019ll end up taking on cheap clients!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Costs<\/h3>\n

In addition to your skills, location, and experience, there
\nare numerous business costs you need to factor into the fee you charge as a PT.<\/p>\n

Depending on your client\u2019s goals, you might need to charge
\nextra for personalised nutritional advice and individual meal plans. If you
\nvisit clients at their homes, you\u2019ll need to consider travel costs too.<\/p>\n

Then there are the more \u2018boring\u2019 (but important) costs that no one likes to consider, such as tax and national insurance. The amount you\u2019ll need to pay for NI contributions will depend on your earnings, but they start at\u00a0\u00a33.45 per week<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>if you\u2019re self-employed and are paid via self-assessment.<\/p>\n

The personal tax allowance is currently \u00a312,570 for the tax
\nyear 2025\/26, so any earnings over that threshold (after business expenses are
\ndeducted) will be liable for tax.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0HMRC website<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is a great resource that gives you the lowdown on self-employment if you\u2019re new to it all.<\/p>\n

Other costs you\u2019ll likely need to consider include your equipment and\u00a0personal trainer insurance<\/span><\/a>. The latter can protect you if a claim is made against you for injury to a client during a session, or if the equipment you use to train is lost, damaged, or stolen.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Statista<\/span><\/a>, more than 64,000 registered health and fitness instructors are working in the UK.<\/p>\n

In an increasingly saturated and competitive market, making
\nyour business and services stand out has never been more important.<\/p>\n

This is where you\u2019ll need to work out your USP (unique
\nselling point) \u2013 i.e. what makes you different from the other PTs in your area?
\nDo you have different or higher-level qualifications? Do you offer something
\nthat they don\u2019t?<\/p>\n

Not only should all of this be included on your website to
\nhighlight your credentials, but it can also be used to price your services, too.<\/p>\n
