{"id":262348,"date":"2025-05-29T09:41:41","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T09:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alabama\/clean-up-alabama-leader-wants-trans-stuff-out-of-all-libraries\/"},"modified":"2025-05-29T09:41:41","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T09:41:41","slug":"clean-up-alabama-leader-wants-trans-stuff-out-of-all-libraries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=262348","title":{"rendered":"Clean Up Alabama leader wants &#8220;trans stuff&#8221; out of all libraries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In the debate over library content for the past two years, part of the argument has been over phrasing.<\/p>\n<p>When anti-censorship groups like Read Freely Alabama have thrown out the term \u201cbook banners,\u201d the other side has often bristled and claimed their intent is solely to move books out of sections for minors and into the adult section.<\/p>\n<p>APR has obtained screenshots of recent Facebook comments from Clean Up Alabama founder and director Hannah Rees that clarify her intent to see all library books dealing with \u201cgender ideology\u201d removed completely from libraries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get frustrated when people say move the books also,\u201d Rees commented on a post she made in the \u201cFaith Family Freedom Coalition of Baldwin County\u201d Facebook group. \u201cWe need to stick with remove and not back down no matter how much pressure and how many times we are called book banners. That is water off the back and the nicest thing I\u2019ve been called.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rees made the comment in response to Stephanie Williams, the woman primarily responsible for challenging books at the Foley Public Library in 2023. Williams said in the comment that \u201cour side has compromised by \u00a0arguing we just want you to move it. I don\u2019t agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The main post from Rees shared a far-right website article detailing the most recent meeting of the Alabama Public Library Service board meeting, including APLS board member Amy Minton\u2019s introduction of a document that would define all materials promoting gender ideology as \u201cinappropriate\u201d under APLS code.<\/p>\n<p>That document cites an executive order from President Donald Trump declaring that no federal funding should be used to promote gender ideology, among other federal and state laws.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut also I think Amy is saying that \u2026 any book that specifically violates Trump\u2019s EOs must be removed from the library altogether,\u201d Rees commented. \u201cIf it cannot be promoted in the military or anywhere in the government (which is all adults) then it should not be promoted in our libraries. He did not mean children, he meant everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some supporters of removing books from the library, whether under the pretense that they are sexually explicit or because they include LGBTQ+ content, say that it is still not \u201cbanning books\u201d because citizens can still purchase the books elsewhere. Rees made a similar statement in the Facebook group thread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important key in this is it should not be purchased with our tax dollars period,\u201d Rees said. \u201cIf a parent wants to expose their kid to WOKE and trans ideology they can do it on their own DIME.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rees pushed that APLS needs to define inappropriate because \u201cleftist librarians\u201d have struggled even to move \u201csexually explicit\u201d materials, much less \u201ctrans stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe slightly more understandable confusion has been what inappropriate is,\u201d Rees wrote in a comment. \u201cWe conservatives knew the line clearly on this, but our leftist librarians refused to say that anything that wasn\u2019t straight porn was inappropriate. So this will not only help understand the policy as it is currently written concerning inappropriate but it takes it a step further on the trans stuff.
