In the memoir, he detailed how he had been sold into slavery in the West Indies and Virginia and eventually purchased his freedom. <em>The Interesting Narrative<\/em> became a bestseller and ignited international conversations about the horrors of slavery.<\/p>\n<p>For such a prominent man, however, Equiano received little attention from artists during his lifetime. Only an engraving of Equiano\u2019s likeness printed in the frontispiece of <em>The Interesting Narrative<\/em> remains. The original miniature portrait has been lost to history.<\/p>\n<p>Omissions of Black abolitionists, resistance leaders and other prominent figures from the historical record are common. But for contemporary artists, omission can be an opportunity for creation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/DwpFj19ATNVTlat7VAJ9cYDSMGY=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(540x674:541x675)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/9d\/99\/9d99c43e-10fa-4a08-a4be-62439fbee219\/495938698_18506736550048960_1769043561661098429_n.jpg\" alt=\"Exhibit view\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      A view of the exhibition, which includes some 100 objects from contemporary and historic artists and creators<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">The Fitzwilliam Museum<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI started off feeling sad and annoyed about the fact that these figures weren\u2019t more widely known, and that quickly moved to excitement,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joylabinjo.com\/\">Joy Labinjo<\/a>, a British-Nigerian artist, tells\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/new-portraits-of-historys-black-revolutionaries-2644569\"><em>Artnet<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Jo Lawson-Tancred.<\/p>\n<p>Labinjo painted <em>An 18th-Century Family<\/em>, an imagined scene of Equiano with his family. Acquired by the University of Cambridge\u2019s Fitzwilliam Museum in 2022, the artwork<em> <\/em>is now the centerpiece of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/plan-your-visit\/exhibitions\/rise-up\">Rise Up: Resistance, Revolution, Abolition<\/a>,\u201d an exhibition that explores the fight to end the transatlantic slave trade and the ongoing struggle against racism and injustice.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition pairs historical paintings and objects with contemporary works. In particular, curators focused \u201con the testimony of individuals as a powerful tool of resistance\u2014and as a way of helping others to recognize injustice,\u201d museum director\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/about-us\/directors\/luke-syson\">Luke Syson<\/a> tells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cjexnex709no\">BBC News<\/a>\u2019 Katy Prickett.<\/p>\n<p>Paired with Labinjo\u2019s painting of Equiano is a collection of objects from throughout his life, including his will and inventory from 1797, his marriage certificate to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/equianosworld.org\/associates-family.php?id=2\">Susannah Cullen<\/a> and a set of Nigerian drums made in the early 20th century, offering a glimpse into the homeland from which he was torn.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>&#8216;Rise Up: Resistance, Revolution, Abolition&#8217; exhibition trailer<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/KEPhXpF6GDgeAhtWcaA8XcFuMGg=\/1072x603\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/embedly\/Screenshot_2025-05-20_at_12.25.07PM.png\" data-video-id=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cRise Up\u201d covers the years between 1750 and 1850\u2014during which the British Empire <a href=\"https:\/\/eji.org\/report\/transatlantic-slave-trade\/origins\/\">trafficked<\/a> more captive Africans than any other European power\u2014with about 100 objects and artworks.<\/p>\n<p>Another figure highlighted in the show is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalparks.org.uk\/read-watch-listen\/remembering-ignatius-sancho\">Charles Ignatius Sancho<\/a>, who was born on a British slave ship around 1729. When he was a small child, Sancho was taken to England, where he learned to read and write. He later became a leading abolitionist and, as a property owner, one of the first known individuals of African descent to vote in a British election.<\/p>\n<p>Sancho is the subject of a 1768\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/brycchancarey.com\/sancho\/portrait.htm\">portrait<\/a> by the English painter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/artists\/thomas-gainsborough\">Thomas Gainsborough<\/a>. It depicts the prominent Black abolitionist, composer and writer with a reverence usually reserved for white subjects.<\/p>\n<p>However, that kind of artistic representation was rare at the time. In a series of portraits, the Haitian-born, Montreal-based artist <a href=\"https:\/\/cheurtelou.wixsite.com\/fcauvin\">Fran\u00e7ois Cauvin<\/a> infuses Haitian revolutionaries with new meanings. His 2009\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/interactives\/pof-toussaint-louverture\">portrait<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Toussaint-Louverture\">Toussaint Louverture<\/a> reworks previous racialized depictions of the leader, replacing his cockade hat with a guinea fowl, which is a symbol of resistance in Haiti.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/EzL082HMmiLjd7XNmy8iCGR5EW0=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(437x516:438x517)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/79\/84\/7984db0f-b289-4a1c-af31-07847db23065\/437_201408_adn21_mas.jpg\" alt=\"The Daughters of Sir Matthew Decker\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      <em>The Daughters of Sir Matthew Decker, Bart<\/em>, Jan van Meyer,\u00a01718<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">The Fitzwilliam Museum<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even the unnamed individuals counted among the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/jul\/12\/british-history-slavery-buried-scale-revealed#:~:text=It%20is%20estimated%20about%2012.5,the%2016th%20century%20and%201807.&amp;text=British%20slave%20owners%20received%20a,compensation%20when%20slavery%20was%20abolished.\">millions forced<\/a> from their homes in Africa to the Caribbean and the Americas get their due at \u201cRise Up\u201d through the work of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joscelyngardner.org\/\">Joscelyn Gardner<\/a>, whose hand-colored lithographs show anonymous women\u2019s heads from behind, combining elaborate hairstyles with wildflowers native to the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition also grapples with the fact that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondthelabel.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk\/labels\/richard-fitzwilliam\">Richard Fitzwilliam<\/a>, the benefactor of the museum, was the grandson of a merchant who profited from the slave trade.
