Before you round up paint and brushes, learn the best way to remove old wallpaper.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><b>\u201cWhy Can\u2019t I Paint Over Wallpaper?\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n<hr\/>\n<p>You\u00a0<i>can\u00a0<\/i>paint over old wallpaper, but that doesn\u2019t mean you\u00a0<i>should<\/i>. You have to do some homework first.<\/p>\n<p>Check the walls you plan to paint. Is the wallpaper peeling or bubbling? Do you see dents where drywall caved in?<\/p>\n<p>Paint alone won\u2019t hide those blemishes.<\/p>\n<p>If you follow through with a paint-over job, you need to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/home.howstuffworks.com\/home-improvement\/home-diy\/painting\/paint-over-wallpaper2.htm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">get rid of damaged wallpaper and replace it<\/a>. On top of that, you should secure peeling or loose pieces with an adhesive.<\/p>\n<p><b>If you decide to paint over the\u00a0 wallpaper, you\u2019ll need:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spackle if you have wallpaper with a heavy texture<\/li>\n<li>Oil-based primer to cover the walls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><b>Removing Wallpaper From Older Walls<br \/><\/b><\/h3>\n<hr\/>\n<p>When you start a project like this, double-check all the tools and supplies you need. You lose time when you stop work to run to the store or make online orders.<\/p>\n<p><b>You\u2019ll need these items to follow the easiest steps for removing old wallpaper:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Putty knife or wallpaper scraping tool<\/li>\n<li>Spray bottle<\/li>\n<li>Sponge<\/li>\n<li>Drop cloth<\/li>\n<li>Trash bag<\/li>\n<li>Wallpaper stripper or fabric softener<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After you gather your supplies, turn off the power to the room you&#8217;re working in. Water dripping into an outlet could lead to disaster.<\/p>\n<p><b>Next, fill a spray bottle with hot water and one of these ingredients:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fabric softener<\/li>\n<li>A tablespoon of baking soda<\/li>\n<li>Vinegar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These ingredients dissolve the adhesive holding up the wallpaper.<\/p>\n<p>Mix the water in small batches so it stays hot. Move everything away from the walls, put down your drop cloth to catch dust and debris, crank some tunes, and get to work.<\/p>\n<p>Soak a small section of the wallpaper with your sponge or spray bottle, and let it sit five to 10 minutes. Starting at a seam, peel the old wallpaper away with a putty knife. Try not to dig too far, or you\u2019ll damage the wall underneath.<\/p>\n<p>Continue the process in small sections until you&#8217;ve removed all the wallpaper. Once you finish, give the wall a few days to dry, then it&#8217;s ready to paint.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Troubleshooting<\/b><\/h3>\n<hr\/>\n<p><b>Waterproof Wallpaper<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Some types of wallpaper are waterproof. Doing this creates small perforations to let the water in.<\/p>\n<p><b>Cracks and Holes<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Repair cracks and holes before you paint your walls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fill small holes with spackle and smooth them out with a putty knife. Once it&#8217;s dry, sand it.<\/p>\n<p>Large holes could lead you to replace the drywall, but that&#8217;s a conversation for another time.<\/p>\n<p>What about cracks? Cover the length of the crack with drywall joint tape. Spackle the length and width of the tape, and sand it smooth after the spackle dries.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><b>Ways to Reuse Old Wallpaper<\/b><\/h3>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Your old wallpaper is probably coated with chemicals that make it impossible to recycle.
