{"id":260865,"date":"2025-05-28T01:59:07","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T01:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/activist\/trumps-tariffs-wont-help-union-workers\/"},"modified":"2025-05-28T01:59:07","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T01:59:07","slug":"trumps-tariffs-wont-help-union-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=260865","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s Tariffs Won\u2019t Help Union Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/progressive.org\/downloads\/21788\/download\/SeanO%27BrienTeamsters.jpg?cb=29e8fd37c8173adcbcc68b5e30e0c1b9\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"lead\">When the Teamsters announced its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/3357941\/teamsters-ask-trump-tariffs-mexican-beer\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (support for tariffs)\">support for tariffs<\/a> on Mexican beer in March, I couldn\u2019t help but think of the old joke about a drunkard searching for his keys under a streetlight, despite having lost them on the other side of the street, because, in his words, \u201cit\u2019s easier to see near the light.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The labor union has said that the move will \u201chelp U.S. workers in the beer industry restore economic balance and fairness in our trading relationship with Mexico.\u201d But should the tariffs have their intended effect in reducing imports to the United States, they will likely also reduce employment for the unionized Mexican workforces that produce Modelo and Corona, both of which are represented by Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de Bebidas Envasadas, Enlatadas y Embotelladas y su Distribuci\u00f3n (National Union of Workers in the Packaged, Canned, and Bottled Beverage Industry and Distribution).<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to the U.S. Trade Representative, Sean O\u2019Brien\u2014who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/11\/us\/politics\/teamsters-trump-biden.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (drawn criticism)\">drawn criticism<\/a> within the labor movement for his seemingly warm relationship with President Donald Trump\u2014warned that \u201cforeign beer imports stand to grow to nearly 40 percent of total U.S. consumption,\u201d and thereby threaten Teamster jobs. United Auto Workers (UAW) president Shawn Fain has also indicated support for Trump\u2019s tariffs, albeit more cautiously. In<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/opinion\/columnists\/labor-voices\/2025\/04\/10\/labor-voices-tariffs-can-be-effective-if-implemented-correctly\/83024775007\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window ( a recent editorial)\"> a recent editorial<\/a> for <em>The<\/em> <em>Detroit News,<\/em> Fain noted with pride that UAW\u2019s \u201clong history of supporting the use of auto tariffs well before Trump ever stepped foot in the White House.\u201d Though he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/10\/business\/uaw-shawn-fain-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (has criticized)\">has criticized<\/a> Trump\u2019s use of tariffs\u2014in an April address to UAW, he called Trump\u2019s blanket tariffs \u201creckless\u201d\u2014he also maintains they can be \u201can effective tool if implemented in a way that actually benefits working people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While O\u2019Brien appears steadfast in his embrace of tariffs, rank-and-file Teamsters appear to be less circumspect. Edgar Esquivel, a twenty-seven-year member of IBT 952 in Orange County, California, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cosmonautmag.com\/2024\/08\/letter-open-rebellion-against-teamsters-gp-sean-obrien\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (longtime O&#x2019;Brien critic)\">longtime O\u2019Brien critic<\/a>, argues that tariffs on Mexican beer will be job killers rather than job savers. \u201cWith tariffs disrupting commerce, this will also have an effect on cargo reduction and possible layoffs of unionized transport workers and the Teamsters bottling division,\u201d Esquivel says. \u201cIn California, the majority of Mexican beer brands are loaded, unloaded, and delivered by Teamster workers.\u201d In order to better protect Teamsters in the beer industry, Esquivel suggests that the union could instead add \u201clanguage that prohibits the closure of plants.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Union leadership\u2019s promotion of protectionism has a long history in the United States, and it\u2019s far from a proud one. During the decline of the \u201cBig Three\u201d motor vehicle manufacturers beginning in the early 1980s, union leaders engaged in regular \u201cJapan-bashing,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/business\/1980\/10\/09\/uaw-blames-imports-for-industry-problems\/a1991897-a2b7-4a41-ae5e-544aa6495157\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (blaming)\">blaming<\/a> the industry\u2019s woes on Japanese imports. Then-Chrysler CEO Lee Iaccoca <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/work\/1658240\/how-lee-iacocca-who-bashed-the-japanese-is-being-remembered-in-japan\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (warned of)\">warned of<\/a> \u201cpredatory trade\u201d and \u201cinsidious Japanese economic and political power within the United States,\u201d while <a href=\"https:\/\/aliciapatterson.org\/frank-johnston\/faces-of-the-80s-america-a-nation-in-transition\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (signs)\">signs<\/a> at union halls and plant parking bore messages like \u201c300,000 laid-off UAW members don\u2019t like your import. Please park it in Tokyo.\u201d There was even a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/360197271603\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (bumper sticker)\">bumper sticker<\/a> that read \u201cDatsun \u00b7 Toyota \u00b7 Nissan \/ REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democratic politicians also engaged in Japan-bashing during this time. In 1982, a Chinese-American man named Vincent Chin was beaten to death outside of Detroit by Ronald Ebens, a Chrysler supervisor, and his stepson Michael Netz, a laid-off autoworker. Before the beating,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metrotimes.com\/news\/nearly-40-years-ago-a-metro-times-reporter-helped-turn-the-killing-of-vincent-chin-into-a-movement-for-asian-american-rights-30361928\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window ( Ebens reportedly told Chin)\"> Ebens reportedly told Chin<\/a> that \u201cIt\u2019s because of you little motherfuckers that we\u2019re out of work.\u201d That year, then-U.S. Senator Carl Levin, Democrat of Michigan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitpbs.org\/news-media\/one-detroit\/through-a-new-lens-revisiting-who-killed-vincent-chin-asian-american-civil-rights-nearly-40-years-later\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (complained)\">complained<\/a> that regarding trade, \u201cwe are being shot at, and shot up, by the Japanese,\u201d while U.S. Representative John Dingell Jr., also a Michigan Democrat,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1982\/07\/11\/business\/tough-nosed-and-enigmatic.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window ( blamed)\"> blamed<\/a> the auto industry\u2019s woes on \u201cthe little yellow people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the auto unions\u2019 strategy of convincing consumers to buy domestic cars ultimately backfired: Money they could have spent organizing non-union part suppliers or foreign car companies\u2019 plants in the South was instead used on \u201cBuy American\u201d campaigns that ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/tempestmag.org\/2025\/04\/nationalism-workers-power-and-the-myth-of-auto-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (failed to stop)\">failed to stop<\/a> the industry\u2019s decline. Meanwhile, Japan-bashing only helped auto executives. By blaming the Japanese for the industry\u2019s troubles, executives were able to align autoworkers with their own interests against a common enemy, allowing them to ask workers for concessions in order to remain \u201cviable competitors\u201d on the international market. At the same time General Motors executives asked their workers to sacrifice scheduled raises and paid holidays, the executives made <a href=\"https:\/\/wayne.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/wayne-open\/id\/7246\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (five times)\">five times<\/a> the salary of an average Toyota executive.<\/p>\n<p>But more recent union leadership appears not to have learned from the earlier generation\u2019s mistakes. During the first Trump Administration, Shawn Fain\u2019s predecessor, Dennis Williams, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uticaod.com\/story\/news\/2017\/02\/16\/auto-workers-union-preparing-buy\/22446408007\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (embraced a similar)\">embraced a similar<\/a> \u201cBuy American\u201d campaign strategy at UAW, which ultimately sputtered to a halt before he was eventually given a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/money\/cars\/2021\/05\/11\/former-uaw-president-dennis-williams-sentenced-corruption-probe\/5041651001\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Link opens in new window (twenty-one month prison sentence)\">twenty-one month prison sentence<\/a> for embezzling union funds. Fain\u2019s continuation of a protectionist strategy, alongside O\u2019Brien\u2019s, signals the potential for a repeat of the Japan-bashing era, aimed this time at Mexico. As with the scapegoating of the Japanese, there are racial implications to union leadership\u2019s focus on Mexico as a competitive threat. After all, if imported beer means fewer Teamster jobs, why is O\u2019Brien not also calling for tariffs on other prominent beer producers like Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland?<\/p>\n<p>The history here offers a clear lesson: Protectionism and scapegoating of foreign competitors ultimately hurts the union rank and file.
