So, you want to know how to play rugby?<\/strong><\/em> Okay, maybe you don\u2019t want to play \u2013 after all it\u2019s an intensely physical sport, known for big hits and mud-splattered jerseys<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re watching from the sofa, the stands, or just trying to keep up with your rugby-mad mates, understanding the basics can make it a whole lot more fun. This guide will help you follow every tackle, try, and triumph.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To put it simply<\/h2>\n

A game of rugby is two teams of 15<\/strong> trying to outscore each other over the course of 80 minutes. You score by placing the ball behind the opposition\u2019s try-line (a try) or kicking the ball between the H-bar. There are a few ways to do this, but we\u2019ll get into kicking later.<\/p>\n

And crucially, you can only pass the ball backwards<\/strong>. Even an accidental forward drop or nudge (knock-on) can result in a penalty.<\/p>\n

The players<\/h2>\n

Each team is split into two \u2013 the Forwards and the Backs. The Forwards (numbers 1-8) are typically larger and stronger, responsible for tackling and rucking. The Backs (numbers 9-15) are usually lighter and more agile, creating plays throughout the game.<\/p>\n

The Forwards include:<\/h3>\n

Prop (#1, #3)<\/strong> \u2013 provides power on each side of the scrum, absorbing most of the force.<\/p>\n

Hooker (#2)<\/strong> \u2013 \u2018hooks\u2019 and collects the ball during a scrum and throws the ball back into play during line-outs.<\/p>\n

Second Row (#4, #5)<\/strong> \u2013 Adds extra power during the scrum, receives the ball from the hooker and delivers it to the scrum-half.<\/p>\n

Flanker (#6, #7)<\/strong> \u2013 Their role is to win and maintain possession of the ball.<\/p>\n

Number8 (#8)<\/strong> \u2013 Executes big tackles and carries the ball through the defensive line, providing essential support to the Backs.<\/p>\n

The Backs include:<\/h3>\n

Scrum Half (#9) <\/strong>\u2013 Links the Forward and Back players, controlling the tempo of the game with key passes and kicks.<\/p>\n

Fly Half (#10)<\/strong> \u2013 Makes runs, kicks and passes that initiate attacks by other Backs.<\/p>\n

Wingers (#11, #14) <\/strong>\u2013 Fast finishers who evade defenders and chase down dropkicks.<\/p>\n

Inside Centre (#12)<\/strong> \u2013 Has a key role, carrying the ball, winning collisions and earning crucial yards up the field.<\/p>\n

Outside Centre (#13)<\/strong> \u2013 Exploits the opposition\u2019s defensive space to create attacking opportunities.<\/p>\n

Full Back (#15)<\/strong> \u2013 The last line of defence, they tackle the opposition and counter and deep-field kicks.<\/p>\n

What happens during a game?<\/h2>\n

Tackling<\/h3>\n

Players wrap their arms around the ball carrier to bring them down safely\u2014high or dangerous tackles result in penalties or cards.<\/p>\n

Scrum<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s time to heave! <\/em>Forwards from both teams bind and push to gain possession of the ball after minor infractions, with the scrum-half feeding it in.<\/p>\n

Ruck<\/h3>\n

Formed after a tackle, players compete on their feet over the ball to secure possession, ending when the ball is played or a penalty is given.<\/p>\n

Maul<\/h3>\n

Occurs when the ball carrier is held up but not brought down\u2014teammates bind on and drive forward with the ball off the ground.<\/p>\n

Lineout<\/h3>\n

When the ball goes out of bounds, all players line up at 90\u00b0 to the touchline. Whichever team didn\u2019t move the ball out of play throws it back in \u2013 the teams lift a player in the air to catch the ball and win possession.<\/p>\n

Scoring<\/h2>\n

Penalty kick<\/h3>\n

Given after serious fouls\u2014kicked from a tee through the goalposts for 3 points.<\/p>\n

Drop goal<\/h3>\n

A player drops the ball and kicks it as it bounces\u2014if it goes through the posts, it scores 3 points.<\/p>\n

Try<\/h3>\n

Scored by grounding the ball on or behind the opponent\u2019s try line.<\/p>\n

Conversion<\/h3>\n

After a try, the scoring team gets a free kick\u2014if it\u2019s kicked between the posts and over the bar, they earn 2 extra points.<\/p>\n

Infractions (aka rule-breaking)<\/h2>\n

Offside<\/h3>\n

A player is offside if they\u2019re in front of the ball or the teammate who last had it\u2014this gives an unfair advantage and leads to a penalty.<\/p>\n

Advantage rule<\/h3>\n

If a minor foul happens but the non-offending team is doing well, the referee lets play continue (called \u201cadvantage\u201d). If no benefit comes from it, the ref stops play and goes back to the original foul.<\/p>\n

Punching<\/h3>\n

Any kind of hitting\u2014punches, elbows, or strikes\u2014is not allowed and results in serious penalties.<\/p>\n

Collapsing a maul<\/h3>\n

Players must stay upright and bind properly in a maul. Deliberately collapsing it, especially by the defending team, is not allowed.<\/p>\n

Penalties are given for serious offenses such as these. They can be taken in several ways:<\/p>\n
