Scores of firefighter crews are struggling to contain the massive inferno\u2014in large part due to the tremendous pressure on the city\u2019s water supply. Reportedly, water pressure to fire hydrants has diminished across the city\u2014and many have run completely dry.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-player\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"California Fires: Is LA running out of water?\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QQhd7eCJbxk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Is California Out of Water to Fight Fires?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Los Angeles\u2019 water system is buckling under the pressure of these ongoing fires, which are mostly uncontained as of January 10. This unprecedented catastrophe begs the question: Where did all the water go?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Link Between Animal Agriculture and Diminished Water Supply<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We can\u2019t talk about California\u2019s water crisis without looking at animal agriculture\u2019s tremendous use of water. According to some reports, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pacinst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/ca_ftprint_full_report3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meat and dairy industries<\/a> account for <strong>an estimated 47% <\/strong>of California\u2019s water footprint. Up to 15% of California\u2019s water is used to grow crops to feed livestock on farms. According to Food &amp; Water Watch, California\u2019s mega-dairies use an estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodandwaterwatch.org\/2024\/09\/21\/factory-farm-nation-2024-edition\/#:~:text=Mega%2Ddairies%20compete%20for%20water,access%20to%20safe%20drinking%20water.&amp;text=FWW.,methane%20than%20pasture%2Dbased%20systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>152 million gallons of water each day<\/strong><\/a>\u2014more than enough to meet the indoor water needs for every resident of San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose combined.<\/p>\n<p>In Southern California, residents are encouraged to limit their water use to 500 to 600 gallons a week\u2014approximately the same amount of water that it takes to produce a single hamburger. You need 2,400 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef, 477 gallons of water for 1 pound of eggs, 900 gallons for 1 pound of cheese, and 1,000 gallons for 1 gallon of cow\u2019s milk. One pound of tofu, on the other hand, requires only 244 gallons of water.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/CA-Wildfires-Ad.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/CA-Wildfires-Ad-602x176.jpg\" alt=\"It's Meat That Brought The Heat Ad california fires\" class=\"wp-image-970471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/CA-Wildfires-Ad-602x176.jpg 602w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/CA-Wildfires-Ad-300x88.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/CA-Wildfires-Ad-768x224.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/CA-Wildfires-Ad-1536x448.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.peta.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/CA-Wildfires-Ad.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Water is used for all parts of animal agriculture\u2014from growing feed crops and managing animal waste to cleaning massive, filthy farms and slaughterhouses and filling scalding-hot tanks used to remove animals\u2019 hair or feathers after workers slaughter them.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t just an issue in California\u2014animal agriculture\u2019s egregious waste of water is occurring all over the world, accounting for an estimated 20% of freshwater use globally. In the U.S. <em>alone<\/em>, <strong>animal agriculture guzzles <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.psu.edu\/skf5159revisedblogs\/2016\/05\/03\/water-sustainability-and-animal-agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>36 to 74 trillion gallons of water<\/em><\/a> per year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Farming animals not only consumes massive amounts of freshwater but also <em>pollutes<\/em> it with tons and tons of animal waste. According to a report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, about 68% of lakes, reservoirs, and ponds in the U.S. and more than half of the nation\u2019s rivers and streams are considered too polluted to use\u2014and a main culprit is animal agriculture.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is the Climate Catastrophe Making Wildfires Worse?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Research shows that the climate catastrophe contributes to the frequency\u2014and severity\u2014of <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/climate-change-contributed-extreme-wildfires-california\/story?id=117475669\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">natural disasters<\/a> like the current Los Angeles wildfires. Additionally, the drastic changes between wet and dry years in California\u2014which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43017-024-00624-z#Sec15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientists say<\/a> is exacerbated by climate change\u2014are amplifying wildfire risks. In other words, the vegetation that grows abundantly during \u201cwet\u201d seasons becomes easily flammable\u2014and vulnerable to ignition\u2014during subsequent \u201cdry\u201d seasons.<\/p>\n<p>This, too, is linked to animal agriculture, which scientists agree is a leading cause of the climate catastrophe. By some estimates, animal agriculture is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than all the world\u2019s transportation systems combined. Animal agriculture is also the single largest source of methane emissions. Methane is far more potent in terms of trapping heat in our atmosphere than carbon dioxide. It has been estimated that more than 90% of all Amazon rainforest land cleared since 1970 is used for grazing livestock and that animal agriculture is responsible for the loss of over 16.4 million trees each day.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">California is on fire and the meat and dairy industries are helping light the match\ud83d\udd25 We\u2019re sending <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GavinNewsom?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GavinNewsom<\/a> a \u201cStrike Out Meat\u201d match box as the Los Angeles wildfires continue to rage \u2014 it&#8217;s past time to promote a vegan lifestyle! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/PKHUL3tYOK\">pic.twitter.com\/PKHUL3tYOK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 PETA (@peta) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peta\/status\/1877479305111904657?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 9, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>PETA points out that the meat and dairy industries are causing the climate crisis and the natural disasters\u2014including these wildfires\u2014that come with it, yet in California alone, they have collected more than\u00a0<em>$1.112 billion in taxpayer dollars<\/em>\u00a0from government subsidies in the last 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile people lose their homes, you\u2019re propping up the very well-financed industries that are killing our precious state,\u201d said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in a letter to Los Angeles Gov.
