Last year I decided to concentrate on Bock ads. Bock, of course, may have originated in Germany, in the town of Einbeck. Because many 19th century American breweries were founded by German immigrants, they offered a bock at certain times of the year, be it Spring, Easter, Lent, Christmas, or what have you. In a sense they were some of the first seasonal beers. \u201cThe style was later adopted in Bavaria by Munich brewers in the 17th century. Due to their Bavarian accent, citizens of Munich pronounced \u2018Einbeck\u2019 as \u2018ein Bock\u2019 (a billy goat), and thus the beer became known as \u2018Bock.\u2019 A goat often appears on bottle labels.\u201d And presumably because they were special releases, many breweries went all out promoting them with beautiful artwork on posters and other advertising.<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s ad\u00a0is for Christian Moerlein\u2019s Bock Beer. The ad was published on May 26, 1903. This one was for Christian Moerlein Brewing Co.<\/a> of Cincinnati, Ohio, which was originally founded in 1853.\u00a0This ad ran in\u00a0the\u00a0Omaha World Herald<\/a>, of Omaha, Nebraska. The ad is promoting all of their beers, and it\u2019s hard to see, but on the seven wooden barrels along the bottom there\u2019s a different style on each one, with the second from the right listing their \u201cBock.\u201d<\/p>\n
