{"id":257872,"date":"2025-05-26T12:04:58","date_gmt":"2025-05-26T12:04:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peraltafinancing.com\/alabama\/alabama-arise-slams-budget-bills-cuts-to-snap-and-medicaid\/"},"modified":"2025-05-26T12:04:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T12:04:58","slug":"alabama-arise-slams-budget-bills-cuts-to-snap-and-medicaid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fivemor.com\/?p=257872","title":{"rendered":"Alabama Arise slams budget bill\u2019s cuts to SNAP and Medicaid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Last Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass President Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c5yg0kgg2njo\">\u201cBig Beautiful\u201d omnibus budget bill<\/a>, which looks to make major cuts to social services, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Medicaid, to fund expanded tax cuts for wealthy Americans and corporations.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the bill\u2019s passage, Alabama Arise \u2014 the statewide nonprofit focused on addressing poverty in Alabama \u2014 released an official statement heavily criticizing the legislation\u2019s provisions and the impacts they would have on everyday Alabamians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s wrong to hurt people who are struggling to help people who are already doing well. But the U.S. House just voted for a budget bill that would do exactly that,\u201d said Arise\u2019s Executive Director Robyn Hyden. \u201cThis cruel budget plan would take away food assistance, health coverage and other vital services from hundreds of thousands of Alabamians who struggle to afford basic needs. And it would make those cuts in service of slashing taxes for billionaires and highly profitable corporations. The bill\u2019s $1.1 trillion of cuts to food assistance and health care over the next decade would be equal to the amount of tax breaks it would provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/press\/statements\/house-republicans-shockingly-harmful-agenda-is-now-crystal-clear-the-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/press\/statements\/house-republicans-shockingly-harmful-agenda-is-now-crystal-clear-the-country&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1748097414157000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0v9CswWIAaU-cyd1J2C4z3\">for the wealthiest 2 percent of households<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In particular, Hyden critiqued the budget\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/05\/19\/republican-snap-cuts-threaten-alabamas-economy-and-food-security\/\">historic cuts to the SNAP<\/a>, which would both increase costs for Alabama\u2019s general fund and leave many Alabamians hungry without critical food assistance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlabama likely would feel the worst effects from cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. SNAP benefits have been fully federally funded for decades, but this bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/food-assistance\/expanded-work-requirements-in-house-republican-bill-would-take-away-food\">would change that<\/a>. As a result of\u00a0this cost shift to states, Alabama would be on the hook to pay nearly $300 million a year in direct benefits and additional administrative costs,\u201d Hyden stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is real reason to worry that the Legislature can\u2019t or wouldn\u2019t provide this additional funding. In that case, Alabama would be forced to cut SNAP benefits significantly \u2013 or even eliminate the program altogether for nearly 800,000 participants statewide,\u201d she continued. \u201cThese cuts would send hunger soaring and devastate the economy in local communities across Alabama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Hyden highlighted the substantial harm which the budget would have on health care access and affordability in Alabama.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe House bill also would make health care inaccessible or less affordable for hundreds of thousands of Alabamians. It would allow enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies to expire, increasing premium costs for marketplace plans,\u201d Hyden noted. \u201cIt also would take away the additional federal incentives for the first two years of Medicaid expansion that Alabama left on the table, increasing the chances that hundreds of thousands of our neighbors will remain stuck in the health coverage gap with no options to afford life-saving care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alabama\u2019s congressional delegation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/05\/23\/alabamas-democratic-delegation-responds-to-trumps-tax-bill-passing-house\/\">voted along party lines<\/a> last Thursday, with the state\u2019s Republicans voting in favor of the budget while U.S. Reps. Terri Sewell, D-Alabama, and Shomari Figures, D-Alabama, voted against the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese drastic cuts to Medicaid and nutrition assistance are the largest in history and represent an outrageous betrayal of our values as Americans,\u201d Sewell said after voting against the legislation. \u201cAlabama families shouldn\u2019t be forced to foot the bill for Trump\u2019s billionaire tax cuts. I voted NO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Figures had also previously critiqued the budget and called out the negative effects it would have on Alabama\u2019s 2nd Congressional District.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne in four people in my district receive SNAP benefits. One in four people in my district receives Medicaid benefits. These are people who can\u2019t afford to lose healthcare access,\u201d Figures said. \u201cThe truth is people will lose those benefits, all in an effort to make long money longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After narrowly passing the House on a vote of 215 in favor to 214 opposed, Trump\u2019s budget now goes to the U.S. Senate where Republicans hold a 53 to 47 majority over Democrats and Independents. Hyden called on the Senate, including Alabama U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt to reject the budget in its current form.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Senate should put the future and well-being of all of us ahead of tax cuts for the wealthy and well-connected. That means rejecting the House bill\u2019s harmful service cuts for working people and tax giveaways to wealthy households,\u201d Hyden stated. \u201cOur senators should focus instead on building an economy that works for everyone in Alabama and across our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement.
