We\u2019re coming to the end of our third full day onboard Queen
\nAnne<\/b>, and whilst everything is pretty hunky dory on the ship itself, there\u2019s
\nbeen a few hiccups with the arrangements for going ashore. As mentioned in a
\nprevious post, Tuesday\u2019s<\/b> visit to Newhaven<\/b> \u2013 the designated transfer port for Edinburgh,<\/b>
\ninvolved a transfer by tender \u2013 basically a number of the ships\u2019 lifeboats. Unfortunately,
\nwhilst there was sufficient small craft available on Queen Anne<\/b>, there was only
\none sea-level,\u00a0\u201cloading platform\u201d<\/b> at the side of the ship to enable passengers to board
\nthe tenders.<\/p>\n
So, whilst I left it until mid-morning to make my way over
\nto terra firma, there was nearly an hour\u2019s wait until I was able to enter one
\nof the lifeboats. <\/b>The organisers had arranged a system, whereby participants waited
\nin the ship\u2019s theatre, until their particular group was called. Apart from nearly
\nlosing the will to live, I was also on the verge of giving up, when the group I
\nwas allocated to, was invited to board. Having now been ashore, and experienced the delights of
\nNewhaven<\/b>, I\u2019m glad that I persevered rather than bailing out. I\u2019m guessing that
\nthe morning incident was just one of everyone wanting to travel at once,
\nbecause the transfer back to the ship passed off relatively smoothly. It\u2019s just
\nas well that Mrs<\/b> PBT\u2019s<\/b> had decided not to come with me, as she is by nature a
\nrathe impatient person, as well as someone who is prone to grumpiness when
\nthings aren\u2019t going her way.<\/p>\n
This came to the fore in this morning\u2019s bus transfer into
\nthe small town of Invergordon<\/b>, from the port. It wasn\u2019t far, and I could easily
\nhave walked it, but given her mobility issues, Eileen<\/b> couldn\u2019t, so the bus it
\nwas. Again, the shore experiences crew seem to have seriously underestimated
\nthe numbers of passengers wishing to go ashore, and we were crammed into the
\nbus like sardines. With the driver urging people to move right to the back of
\nthe bus, because he was licensed to carry up to 34<\/b> standing passengers, it wasn\u2019t
\na pleasant experience, even though it was a short one. I though the driver was
\nbullshitting at first, but a formal notice about passenger numbers was painted
\non the bus interior. Scottish law<\/b> is obviously different to that which applies
\nin England,<\/b> because bus drivers back home, will only allow a maximum of a dozen
\npeople standing, inside their vehicles.<\/p>\n
There wasn\u2019t much to see or do in Invergordon, so I
\naccompanied Mrs PT\u2019s<\/b> back to the ship, with the aim of walking back into town,
\nand trying out the single pub that we\u2019d seen, only to be told that I couldn\u2019t. I
\ndiscovered that pedestrian traffic is not permitted in what is classed as a \u201cWorking
\nPort,\u201d<\/i><\/b> even though there was little evidence of much work taking place. A
\ncouple of oil-drilling platforms were undergoing maintenance, but that aside,
\nthe bulk of the workforce were parading around in their hi-vis jackets and
\nsafety helmets, bossing queuing passengers around.<\/p>\n
A ridiculous situation, especially when I consider other ports
\nthat I\u2019ve walked though, or train tracks I\u2019ve crossed in certain central European
\ncountries. It wouldn\u2019t have taken more than five minutes to exit the port on
\nfoot, and then five more minutes to walk into Invergordon<\/b> itself. Instead, I was
\nobliged take the shuttle back into town and then wait for a bus back. There are
\nonly two pubs remaining in Invergordon, when once there was eight, and the only
\nshop of any size was the Co-Op.<\/b> The rest of the town seemed given over to charity
\nshops, plus the obligatory Turkish Barber<\/b>s, but the set against the backdrop of
\nthe hillsides, and the loch, together with the almost wall-to wall sunshine we
\nenjoyed, I\u2019m really pleased that the voyage organisers had decided to call in
\nthere.<\/p>\n
We\u2019ve one more tender transfer port on our itinerary, and that\u2019s
\nD\u00fan Laoghaire<\/b>,
\nwhere Queen Anne<\/b> will be at anchor, offshore. From D\u00fan Laoghaire<\/b>, there will be
\nsight-seeing and shuttle buses into nearby Dublin, <\/b>but I shall give the Irish
\ncapital<\/b> a miss. I spent a most enjoyable long weekend there, ten years ago, in what
\nwas a booze-infused visit. A couple of hours there, by tour bus, somehow doesn\u2019t
\ngo anywhere near doing Dublin<\/b> justice, so a tour around some of the city\u2019s finest
