Yet, the delinquency rate for student loans surged\u00a0<strong>from below 1%<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>to nearly 7.7%\u00a0<\/strong>after a pandemic-era pause on student loan payments was lifted in September 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/student%20loan%20score.jpg?itok=dCDEg7f8\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"g g-1\"><div class=\"g-single a-8\"><a class=\"gofollow\" data-track=\"OCwxLDEsNjA=\" href=\"https:\/\/www.empshield.com\/?coupon=macro\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/EMP-SHIELD-BANNER-400x400-1.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While the payments were resumed, policymakers extended a one-year ramp-up period that shielded borrowers\u2019 missed payments from being reported to credit bureaus. This extension\u00a0<strong>expired in October 2024, with delinquencies starting to hit the first quarter of 2025.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Needless to say,\u00a0<strong>it\u2019s total carnage\u00a0<\/strong>among borrowers, as one can see from Reddit\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/old.reddit.com\/r\/StudentLoans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">StudentLoans<\/a>\u2018 forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c<strong>My credit score dropped 240+ points. i dont know what to do!!<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/wip\/VNf7U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0one Redditor, who says she can\u2019t pay her bills because she doesn\u2019t have a job after graduating in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>My score was in the high 700s and dropped to about 480<\/strong>,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/wip\/XDn08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0another Redditor, who said they were notified by reporting agency Experian that their credit \u201ctook a massive hit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>My transunion and equifax scores took a -100 hit\u00a0<\/strong>due to my loans \u201cjust being recognized this January,\u201d\u201d reported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/wip\/DlQsS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another<\/a>\u00a0borrower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>My credit dropped from a 720 to a 550<\/strong>,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/wip\/IOlEv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0yet another \u2013 who reported having \u201c<em><strong>6 total loans<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0from school\u201d that have been \u201cdeferred for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Credit Got Torched\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>reads a Friday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/wip\/YsgOU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post<\/a>. \u201ci am unfortunately 1 of the 9 million people who received delinquency marks on my credit report from the dept of education for student loans,\u00a0<strong>which decreased my credit score by 118 points<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/wip\/K5GpI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several<\/a>\u00a0redditors said\u00a0<strong>their scores tanked from loans taken out in their names that they were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/wip\/aqhKI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unaware<\/a>\u00a0of \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>including the first example, who said \u201cI have 10 student loans overall, 5 sub, 5 unsub, and have never had anything else on my credit or anything, no cards or loans, etc. I did get my identity stolen, but I disputed the loans that were taken out fraudulently, and my score was barely affected at all from it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/Memorial%20Day%20Beef%204.jpg?itok=LJB4UYNL\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>According to the NY Fed report, while over half of the newly delinquent borrowers\u00a0<strong>already have subprime credit scores,\u00a0<\/strong>around 2.4 million borrowers who entered delinquency this year had scores over 620 \u2013 which could have allowed them to qualify for auto loans, mortgages, and credit cards, prior to the delinquency being reported.\u00a0<strong>3.2 million borrowers<\/strong>\u00a0whose scores were under 620 (56.6% of the newly delinquent population) saw their scores decline by\u00a0<strong>an average of 74 points.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another\u00a0<strong>2 million borrowers with scores between 620 \u2013 719\u00a0<\/strong>(35.9% of new delinquencies) saw their credit scores fall\u00a0<strong>by an average of 140 points \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>while there were 400,000 borrowers whose scores were above 720 (7.2% of new delinquencies) that saw their scores fall by over 100 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1198\" height=\"873\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/perce2.JPG?itok=I6M5br6M\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Over 1 million borrowers saw drops of at least 150 points.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The report found that seven states have a conditional student loan delinquency rate \u2014 which excludes borrowers who don\u2019t have a payment due \u2014 above 30%, including Mississippi (44.6%), Alabama (34.1%), West Virginia (34%), Kentucky (33.6%), Oklahoma (33.6%), Arkansas (33.5%) and Louisiana (31.8%).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>At the end of the first quarter, over 20 million federal student loan borrowers weren\u2019t in repayment and five million had a zero-dollar monthly payment. \u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy\/student-loan-delinquencies-surge-sending-credit-scores-plunging-borrowers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fox News<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter a five-year hiatus, student loan delinquency has returned to the pre-pandemic \u2018normal\u2019 with more than 10 percent of balances and roughly six million borrowers either past due or in default,\u201d according to the NY Fed report, which noted that the collections process that resumed in May includes the \u201cgarnishment of wages, tax returns, and Social Security payments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/by%20age.JPG?itok=BZQnzuN_\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAdditionally, millions of borrowers face steep declines in their credit standing which will increase borrowing costs or seriously limit their access to credit like mortgages and auto loans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n            \n
