[May 19th<\/sup><\/a> marks the
\n100th<\/sup> birthday of Malcolm Little, better known as Malcolm X<\/a>. So this
\nweek I\u2019ve AmericanStudied a handful of cultural representations of Malcolm,
\nleading up to this special weekend post on what we can learn from Malcolm here
\nin 2025!]<\/p>\n

On three
\nof the many lessons from Malcolm X\u2019s life and work worth learning from in our
\nown moment.<\/span><\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Cross-Cultural Connections: I\u2019ve written a few
\ntimes in this space (and
\nelsewhere<\/a>) about Yuri
\nKochiyama<\/a>, the Japanese American activist who became so close to Malcolm
\nthat she was famously
\nphotographed<\/a> cradling his head just after his February 1965 assassination. Kochiyama\u2019s
\nactivisms were consistently defined by cross-cultural connections, whether to
\nthe Civil Rights Movement or Puerto Rican independence fighters or illegally
\nimprisoned Muslim Americans after 9\/11. But her relationship with Malcolm X
\nlikewise reminds us that he too forged such cross-cultural connections, that
\nhis work was undertaken in conversation and collaboration with others doing the
\nwork (despite the narrative of him as a separatist, which does reflect some of
\nhis views but is far from sufficient to understanding him). Now more than ever,
\nwe must all hang together, and I value all reminders of such solidarity from
\nacross our histories. <\/span><\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Antisemitism: None of us are perfectly able to
\nembody such solidarity, though, and in one key area Malcolm fell short, and
\nindeed too often expressed the divisions and discriminations that are the
\nopposite of solidarity. Due in part to his dozen years as a leader of the
\nradical Nation
\nof Islam<\/a> (NOI), and in part to what seem to have been his personal
\nprejudices, Malcolm consistently voiced and advocated for antisemitic ideas and
\nnarratives, including not just through statements like<\/a>
\n\u201cIn America, Jews sap the very life-blood of the so-called Negroes to maintain
\nthe state of Israel\u201d but also through
\ndistributing<\/a> The Protocols of the Elders of Zion<\/i> to NOI members. In
\n2025 America accusations of antisemitism are too often used as an
\nexcuse for persecution<\/a> of other endangered individuals; but that incredibly
\nfrustrating trend can\u2019t allow us to dismiss the genuine presence
\nof antisemitic views and narratives<\/a> in our moment and society, including if
\nnot especially among communities that should be allies of those facing such
\nhate. <\/span><\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Human Heroism: Remembering that most frustrating
\nside of Malcolm\u2019s views helps us do what I argued throughout this week\u2019s series
\ncultural works can also do: see such historical figures as human, with all the
\nlayers (from the best to the worst of us) that that implies. Obviously that
\ndoesn\u2019t excuse the worst, nor mean that we have to simply accept it without
\ncritique or challenge; but at the same time, I\u2019ve never encountered a
\nhistorical figure who didn\u2019t have layers that needed such critique and
\nchallenge, and so we can and must engage them while still finding and focusing
\non figures whose best can inspire our own best. This concept of human heroism
\nfeels to me like a parallel to others on which I\u2019ve focused in recent years,
\nfrom critical patriotism to critical optimism. I need to keep thinking about
\nit, but I believe it has real value, and certainly can help us see a figure
\nlike Malcolm X as a human hero. <\/span><\/p>\n
