The 90s. For many anime fans, it was a golden age, synonymous with groundbreaking animation, unforgettable stories, and the rise of global phenomena. When we talk about 90s anime, names like Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, and Neon Genesis Evangelion instantly spring to mind. They are, without a doubt, must-watch anime from the 90s and rightly hold their legendary status. But what about the hidden gems? Beyond the Big Three: Unearthing 5 Underrated 90s Anime You Need to Watch

1. Slayers: A Hilarious High-Fantasy Romp

"e4d14

Often overshadowed by its more serious fantasy counterparts, Slayers (which first aired in 1995) is a vibrant, witty, and action-packed series that deserves far more credit. Following the incredibly powerful (and hilariously greedy) sorceress Lina Inverse and her chivalrous-but-dim companion Gourry, Slayers redefined what a fantasy adventure could be. It masterfully blends high-stakes magic battles with laugh-out-loud comedy and genuine character development. The magic system is intricate, the villains are memorable, and the sheer joy radiating from every episode makes it an absolute delight. For fans of classic fantasy and sharp humor, Slayers is a prime example of underrated 90s anime.

2. Zenki: Demonic Action with a Divine Touch

"zenki

For those who appreciated the demon-fighting action and supernatural elements of YuYu Hakusho, look no further than Zenki (1995). This series centers on Chiaki, a descendant of a powerful Buddhist monk, who can summon the mighty (and rather unruly) demon Zenki. Bound to protect humanity from other malevolent spirits, their partnership is fraught with bickering but ultimately driven by a shared goal. Zenki delivers classic shounen tropes: monster-of-the-week battles that escalate in power, a growing roster of allies, and an overarching plot that delves into ancient lore. It’s a solid, action-packed entry into the supernatural shounen genre from the era.

3. Wild Arms: Twilight Vandalism: A Western-Fantasy Journey

Joining a special agency, she teams up with others possessing unique abilities. Blue Seed boasts strong action sequences, a dark and engaging plot, and explores themes of destiny, sacrifice, and the clash between ancient powers and modern society. It’s an impactful and often intense series from the 90s anime landscape.

5. Master Mosquiton ’99: A Comedic Vampire Adventure

"master
