According to the New York Times, nearly 200 of those employees worked at already-understaffed weather forecasting offices.<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, NOAA and the NWS are responsible for weather forecasts and issuing severe storm warnings across the nation. <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/post\/more-tornadoes-fewer-national-weather-service-meteorologists-doge-cuts-make-dangerous-mix-worrying-us-officials\/16483704\/\">Experts have warned<\/a> that the Trump administration\u2019s cuts could dramatically impact the agencies\u2019 ability to effectively forecast dangerous weather as states across the country, including Alabama, face tornado and hurricane seasons.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-California, the senior Democrat on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology \u2014 which oversees the NWS \u2014 recently decried the dangerous consequences of the Trump administration\u2019s cuts to the weather service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChaotic and illegal firings, coercions to resign, reductions in force, and a general obsession with destroying the morale of dedicated public servants have left the National Weather Service\u2019s workforce so strained they cannot carry out their duties as they once did,\u201d Lofgren said.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, reports are already surfacing of understaffed NWS offices scrambling to properly forecast storms in states like Kentucky, where a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/top-stories\/latest\/kentucky-tornado-national-weather-service-fema-trump-beshear-rcna207749\">deadly tornado<\/a> killed over 20 people late last week.<\/p>\n<p>While the 122 NWS weather offices across the nation are forced to cut back programs like weather balloon launches and tailored forecasting, the U.S. is on track to see a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/severe-weather\/over-900-tornadoes-makes-this-season-worst-since-2011\/1776877#:~:text=Over%20900%20tornadoes%20in%202025,since%20the%20end%20of%20April.\">historically active and destructive tornado season<\/a>. NOAA\u2019s Storm Prediction Center has recorded more preliminary tornado reports by May 20 than in any year since 2011, with Alabama\u2019s neighboring state of Mississippi leading the rest of the country with 97 tornado reports so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>Both current and former NWS officials are expressing concern about their ability to effectively monitor severe weather like tornadoes due to the Trump administration\u2019s cuts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt has made it hard on the local offices just to make sure that we have all of our important duties covered. But, I mean, most of the people take those important duties seriously, so we\u2019re going to do what it takes to cover it,\u201d Rich Thompson, lead operations forecaster at the NWS Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma told <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7chicago.com\/post\/more-tornadoes-fewer-national-weather-service-meteorologists-doge-cuts-make-dangerous-mix-worrying-us-officials\/16483704\/\">ABC News<\/a>. \u201cI hope we\u2019re not in the same staffing situation long term. \u2026 It would be hard to sustain this for months or years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll continue to answer the bell as long as they can, but you can only ask people to work 80 hours or 120 hours a week, you know for so long,\u201d Elbert \u201cJoe\u201d Friday, a former weather service director, also told ABC. \u201cThey may be so bleary-eyed, they can\u2019t identify what\u2019s going on on the radar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Popular Alabama meteorologist James Spann also made a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100044640960136\/posts\/pfbid02t678eFjoNbqNDV1aWjuQhkrB2Ahs5Yoe5BWG389FKtzKHzz8gvFVcHKCDBEGR2oVl\/\">post<\/a> to his Facebook page in February, warning of the dangers of cutting NWS services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNWS meteorologists work long, hard hours serving the people of this country, not only during times of severe weather, but on the routine days as well. Their surface and upper air observation networks along with computer models, radars, and satellites are critical for all meteorologists, including those of us in the private sector,\u201d Spann wrote. \u201cMost NWS field offices are currently understaffed right now. I can only imagine morale is not especially high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany high-level politicians follow this page, both Democrats and Republicans. I would encourage them and all of you to support my colleagues at the National Weather Service during this time,\u201d Spann continued. \u201cTheir service is absolutely invaluable. If NWS products and services are reduced, we all suffer\u2026 especially during times of life-threatening weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/weather\/2025\/05\/how-many-tornadoes-hit-alabama-sorting-through-damage-may-take-a-while.html\">several likely tornadoes<\/a> hit northern Alabama, with both the Huntsville and Birmingham NWS offices broadcasting severe weather warnings. No injuries or fatalities were reported, but survey teams are currently sorting through large amounts of storm damage in north and central Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration\u2019s cuts to NWS and NOAA have yet to show a tangible impact on Alabama\u2019s storm-readiness, but a clearer picture may emerge as tornado season continues through the rest of May and into June.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement.
