I\u2019m obviously familiar with the south coast<br \/>\ntown of the same name, but until the other day the <b>Scottish<\/b> one remained a<br \/>\ncomplete mystery. However, I am pleased to report that I found the small<br \/>\n<b>Scottish<\/b>, seaside port of <b>Newhaven<\/b> a pleasant and very welcome surprise.<br \/>\nStepping ashore from the tender, after a calm and quite scenic crossing by<br \/>\nship\u2019s tender (lifeboat), from <b>Queen Anne,<\/b> proved to be a real delight, on a<br \/>\nday that was bright, sunny and reasonably warm. After our small craft had tied<br \/>\nup at the picturesque harbour, and I\u2019d stepped ashore, my first task was to get<br \/>\nmy bearings, and then find a pub.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Fortunately, representatives from the town\u2019s tourist board<br \/>\nwere on hand, dishing out maps, and dispensing friendly and useful advice. I\u2019d<br \/>\nalready carried out a spot of research, via <b>What Pub<\/b>, and the two pubs I\u2019d<br \/>\npicked, seem to agree with what the <b><i>&#8220;Visit Newhaven&#8221;<\/i><\/b> ladies were saying. They<br \/>\nalso helped get me into <b>Mrs PBT\u2019s <\/b>good books, by informing me of a large <b>ASDA<\/b><br \/>\nsupermarket, not far from the harbour. It actually ended up making her jealous,<br \/>\nas she would liked to have visited the store itself &#8211; we\u2019re supposed to be on<br \/>\nholiday btw, not shopping for yet more clothes! <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Supermarkets aside, and with <b>What Pub<\/b> acting as my guide, I<br \/>\nheaded away from the harbour area and turned right along the shoreline. On the<br \/>\nway I passed the <b>Harbour Inn<\/b>, the first of the potential pubs on my hit list.<br \/>\nAdvertising itself as a <b>Belhaven<\/b> house, it is of course a <b>Greene King<\/b> pub, and<br \/>\nto their credit, the <b>East Anglian<\/b> giant has kept this heritage brewery, based in nearby <b>Dunbar<\/b> open. Deciding to keep the <b>Harbour<\/b> in reserve for later, I continued<br \/>\nfurther along the coast to the attractive looking, and stone-built <b><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.belhaven.co.uk\/pubs\/edinburgh\/starbank-inn?utm_source=bing&amp;utm_medium=locations&amp;utm_campaign=HT_pubpage\">Starbank Inn.<\/a><\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The<b> Starbank<\/b> had that immediate <b><i>\u201cwow\u201d<\/i><\/b> factor, that screams<br \/>\nout this is going to be a good pub, a feeling that was enhanced by the friendly<br \/>\ngreeting I received from the landlady. There was a fine selection of cask ales<br \/>\non offer, although a couple of them were shown as <b><i>\u201ccoming soon\u201d<\/i><\/b> a la<br \/>\n<b>Wetherspoons.<\/b> I opted for <b>Lost in Mosaic<\/b>, from <b>Loch Lomond Brewery<\/b>, and despite<br \/>\nthe beer being advertised as a <b><i>\u201cNew World IPA\u201d<\/i><\/b>, thankfully, there were no signs<br \/>\nof cloudy murk in sight. Instead, I was presented with an excellent, and easy<br \/>\ndrinking mid-strength <b>IPA<\/b> that was a pleasure to drink, and a welcome return to<br \/>\ncask after the bottled ales on the ship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">With no hint of pressure, the landlady asked if I was<br \/>\nlooking for a bite to eat, and after applying in the affirmative, I was<br \/>\npresented with the pub\u2019s menu. A chicken and bacon sandwich, from the <b><i>\u201clite<br \/>\nbites\u201d<\/i><\/b> selection, fitted the bill, with a choice of white bread, or ciabatta. I<br \/>\nwent for the former, and when my substantial\u00a0<b>\u201csnack\u201d<\/b> arrived it was well presented. I know, that<br \/>\nin the past, I have moaned about the garnish that often accompanies such sandwiches,<br \/>\nbut in this case, it wasn\u2019t just nicely presented, but was tasty as well \u2013<br \/>\nsomething about the dressing?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Although I wasn\u2019t quite the first person to walk through the<br \/>\npub door that morning, I was pretty close to being that individual, so I<br \/>\nnoticed with interest how this experienced licensee used the same sales<br \/>\ntechnique on everyone who came through the doors. By and large, it worked,<br \/>\nespecially with the group of <b>Americans<\/b> that arrived a short while later. Looking<br \/>\nand listening to them, like me, they\u2019d obviously arrived off the same cruise<br \/>\nship as me. It was worth staying for another beer, and this time I opted for an<br \/>\nold favourite that I\u2019d not seen in ages. <b>Deuchars IPA<\/b> is, of course, no longer<br \/>\nbrewed at the historic <b>Caledonian Brewery<\/b> on the outskirts of <b>Edinburgh.<\/b><br \/>\nCorporate owners, <b>Heineken<\/b> put paid to that, but whichever brewery is the new<br \/>\ncustodian of this beer, had obviously done a good job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">All in all, the <b>Starbank <\/b>turned out to be an excellent pub,<br \/>\nand I was delighted with this choice. I conveyed my gratitude to the landlady<br \/>\nas I left. Knowing I was only in town for a short while, she recommended I try<br \/>\nthe <b><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oldchainpier.com\/\">Old Chain Pier<\/a><\/u><\/b>, an attractive looking, single storey structure, overlooking<br \/>\nthe beach. It was just a short stroll away, on the opposite side of the road,<br \/>\nand with mine hostesses\u2019 recommendation, ringing in my ears, it would have been<br \/>\nrude not to give the place a try.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It&#8217;s a bit hard to put a handle on the <b>Old Chain Pier<\/b>,<br \/>\nalthough the licensee of the <b>Starbank<\/b> had mentioned it was quite food oriented.<br \/>\nThis feature was amplified by the <b><i>\u201cPlease Wait Here to be Seated\u201d<\/i><\/b> notice, just<br \/>\ninside the door. I explained to the barman that I just wanted a drink, which<br \/>\nwas fine, and I was instructed to find myself a table. There was a reasonable<br \/>\nselection of beers, so feeling adventurous I opted for <b>Swan Blonde<\/b> from<br \/>\n<b>Bowness Bay Brewing,<\/b> before settling down to enjoy the view. It was interesting<br \/>\nto note the large party of tourists, who I think were from <b>Japan<\/b>. I ought to be<br \/>\nable to recognise <b>Japanese<\/b> people by now, seeing as the company I work for is<br \/>\npart of a group from that part of the world, but it\u2019s easy to make a mistake,<br \/>\nand at the end of the day, it doesn\u2019t really matter. What I did twig was they<br \/>\nwere students, and judging by the tags on their baggage, newly arrived in this<br \/>\npart of the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The bar was pleasant enough, but it wasn\u2019t a place I wanted<br \/>\nto linger too long at (unlike the <b>Starbank<\/b>, for example), so after finishing my<br \/>\ndrink, I wandered back along the promenade in the direction of the harbour. Pleased<br \/>\nto see there wasn\u2019t much of a queue, I decided I ought to nip along to <b>ASDA<\/b> and<br \/>\npick up a few goodies for <b>Mrs PBT\u2019s.<\/b><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It<br \/>\nwas an <b>ASDA<\/b> and a half, with a branch of <b>Greggs <\/b>attached, but the tissues, soap<br \/>\nand snacks I\u2019d been instructed to buy were sufficient, as far as I was<br \/>\nconcerned. The transfer back to the ship was uneventful, with minimal<br \/>\nqueuing to board the tender. <b>Eileen<\/b> was jealous that she had missed the<br \/>\nenormous <b>ASDA<\/b>, but the crisps and <b>Kit Kats<\/b> went down well. As for <b>Newhaven,<\/b> well<br \/>\nit was a very nice place, and well worth the tram ride along from <b>Edinburgh<\/b>, if<br \/>\nyou are ever in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p>Still no photos, I&#8217;m afraid, although as with the other photo-less posts, I will edit and add in the illustrations, once I&#8217;m back home.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although I\u2019ve been to Edinburgh several times and have even been to Leith (often described as the Scottish capital\u2019s port), I\u2019d never been to Newhaven, let alone heard of it.
