Note that due to lack of time, we\u2019re going to keep this brief as opposed to writing out a doctoral thesis on each game. Also note that very soon, we\u2019re going to launch an Arcade Hall Of Fame on the site; Pac-Man is on that list, but it\u2019s still time consuming to get <em>everything<\/em> on there that needs to be.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center; border: 3px dotted yellow;\">PAC-MAN<\/h3>\n<p>Japan\/US release: May \/ October 1980. The genesis of PAC-MAN began with what Namco had initially called <em>Puck-Man<\/em>, but when they settled on a licensor (Midway), the wise decision was made to adjust that to PAC. It didn\u2019t take long for the game to become a sensation on the arcade scene, building upon big successes like Taito\u2019s <em>Space Invaders<\/em> and Atari\u2019s <em>Asteroids<\/em> to quickly become the face of arcades all over the planet. To be fair, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?id=4FtQAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=kw4EAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=6893,2823984\">it was Bally VP William Peltier who provided numbers to the press<\/a> of \u201cover 100,000 Pac-Man units and over 125,000\u201d Ms. Pac-Man units, thus combining the two to reach that gives the near 300k number that is often brought up out there.<\/p>\n<p>Note that the legend about Pac-Man being inspired by a pizza is only \u201chalf-true,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/pacmanmuseum.com\/history\/\">according to the game\u2019s creator.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center; border: 3px dotted pink;\">MS. PAC-MAN<\/h3>\n<p>JP\/US release: Jan. 13th, 1982. Starting off as a hack of PAC-MAN by the name of Crazy Otto, Midway was salivating to extend the PAC-MAN fever as best they could, and so they worked out a deal with the Crazy Otto creators to turn this into an \u201csort-of\u201d official sequel. As we\u2019ll see over the next several games, Midway took some liberties to build upon the sensation that they had \u2013 which made for some friction between them and Namco when the industry saw a downturn. This Midway created sequel has its fans, but the changes to basic gameplay \u2013 swapping out the dots with fruits, and having locked doors where you needed to eat keys to open them \u2013 didn\u2019t quite resonate with players like the previous two games did. Even with multiple Pac-Man games in production, including the aforementioned pin, Bally figured \u201cwhy not both?\u201d and made this video\/pinball hybrid game. That or you can say that the happy couple wasted no time in starting a family. Either way, this was a cool concept, as you\u2019ll play the video segment to then unlock the pinball on, but it wasn\u2019t without some significant problems. It would also improve the graphics as far as adding horizontal scrolling, however, this ended up falling flat too, since it meant that you couldn\u2019t see if you\u2019d missed a dot on some part of the maze that\u2019s off screen. As such, they\u2019ve released several \u201canniversary\u201d games that include Pac-Man and some other Namco titles \u2013 although Ms. Pac-Man\u2019s inclusion has been an on\/off thing thanks to the weird legal issues that surround it.<\/p>\n<p>Note that all of these were released in some kind of official coin-op form; I\u2019m not including stuff like Arcade 1up.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center; border: 3px dotted yellow;\">PAC-MAN Battle Royale<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arcadeheroes.com\/2011\/07\/29\/pac-man-battle-royale-unboxing\/\">Released in Summer 2011<\/a>.
