<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nDEAF CENTER \u2013 REVERIE<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\nDeaf Center<\/a> <\/em><\/strong>is not exactly flooding the market with their releases: their last album, Low Distance, was released in 2019 \u2013 before that, Recount was released in 2014. Like Recount, Reverie<\/em> presents two long tracks both around 17 minutes (so the perfect length for the (red) vinyl edition, leaving enough room for the dynamics). <\/p>\nIt will not be immediately clear on first listen, but Reverie<\/em><\/strong> (split into Rev <\/em>and Erie)<\/em> is a live recording from October 2024, performed for Sonic Pieces\u2019 15th anniversary celebration.
Skodvin<\/em><\/strong> and Otto Totland<\/a><\/em><\/strong> had not performed together since 2019, but their musical interaction in this spontaneous improvisation (!) feels like returning home after a long absence.<\/p>\nReverie<\/em> obviously means \u2018daydream\u2019, but \u2013 especially on Rev \u2013 <\/em>this daydream gets quite intense. The piece starts with Totland<\/em><\/strong>\u2018s<\/em> distinctly melancholic piano melodies \u2013 the kind you would expect in a piece called Reverie. Slowly yet inevitably, Skodvin<\/strong>\u2018s<\/em> electronic processing creeps in, accompanied by his heavily processed guitar and cello. Even under the pressure of an intense climax, Totland<\/strong>\u2018s<\/em> peaceful piano playing bravely holds up.<\/p>\nErie<\/em> begins as a duo between piano and cello, slowly working towards the end where \u201cthe piano motifs from before repeat and vary, for then to slowly settle into gentle melancholy, supported only by a low, rumbling ambient shadow\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\u201cTotland<\/strong>\u2019s deep melodic feeling is underscored by Skodvin<\/strong>\u2019s abstract ambience and processing.
