That\u2019s no longer true, especially because underlined text now leads people to expect hyperlinks.<\/p>\n<p>Underlining headings dates back to the days of typewriters. As <a href=\"http:\/\/practicaltypography.com\/underlining.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Practical Typography<\/em><\/a> says,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Underlining is another dreary typewriter habit. Typewriters had no bold or italic styling. So the only way to emphasize text was to back up the carriage and type underscores be\u00adneath the text. It\u2019s Sample 2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That ease is important in encouraging readers to skim\u2014rather than abandon\u2014your content. That\u2019s important now that everyone\u2019s attention spans have shortened. If they continue skimming, perhaps they\u2019ll find a heading that tempts them to dig into the details of what you\u2019ve written.<\/p>\n<h2>Use heading styles built into your software<\/h2>\n<p>If you only have one level of headings in your document, it\u2019s easy to make them all <strong>bold<\/strong>. But what if you have different levels of headings? I prefer to devote more time to writing than design.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft Office isn\u2019t the only software with different styles for headings. You\u2019ll also find them in WordPress.
