His neighbor had recently undergone surgery for chronic leg pain and, with no bench available, was left to sit on the hard pavement while waiting for public transportation. For Owens, it was a poignant moment that spoke to a broader issue.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cFor many years, I had complained about the lack of seating for bus benches in Berkeley and got no response from either the city of Berkeley or AC Transit,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Owens shared in a recent article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/local\/article\/guerrilla-transit-activists-bus-benches-bay-area-20234113.php\"><i>SFGate<\/i><\/a>. Tired of waiting for official action, Owens took a picture of his neighbor\u2019s plight and shared it on social media. The image quickly struck a nerve.<\/p>\n<p><b>A Generous Offer and an Idea Takes Shape<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Among those who saw the photo was Mingwei Samuel, a local software engineer with a keen interest in community projects. Samuel had been involved with the <a href=\"https:\/\/publicbenchproject.wordpress.com\/\">Public Bench Project<\/a>, an initiative that places benches in public areas and donates them to local businesses and organizations with the goal of fostering more community-friendly public spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the post, Samuel reached out and offered to relocate one of his own handmade benches to the bus stop in question. Samuel and Owens, who had never met before, began collaborating on a new project they named the <a href=\"https:\/\/bench.builders\/\">SFBA Bench Collective<\/a>. The pair quickly built a simple website, giving local residents the tools to get involved by reporting problem stops, requesting benches, or joining in on future bench-building events.<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception, the SFBA Bench Collective has installed approximately 77 benches throughout the community. Each bench is thoughtfully constructed to comply with both AC Transit\u2019s guidelines and the requirements of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/\">Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)<\/a>, ensuring they\u2019re accessible and safe for all. The group focuses on placing benches at high-traffic bus stops where they can have the greatest impact. Remarkably, each bench costs just around $70 to make.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the project has also created a kind of unofficial collaboration with local transit authorities. From time to time, the collective\u2019s handmade benches are replaced by official ones from the city or transit agency. Rather than seeing this as a setback, Owens views it as a quiet victory. <em><strong>\u201cThat means the collective\u2019s work is complete: We got the cities to build benches for its citizens,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<h3><b>A Movement Gains National Momentum<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The idea didn\u2019t stop in Berkeley. Inspired by the collective\u2019s efforts, a climate activist who volunteered with the project posted a video documenting a bench installation. The video resonated widely, quickly accumulating over 3.2 million views. From there, the initiative began spreading beyond city limits, as social media users and grassroots organizers in other cities took note and began advocating for similar amenities in their own neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cAfter the election, I think there\u2019s been more energy to do something good in the world, for once, so other people have helped step up to organize bench-build weekends,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Samuel remarked.<\/p>\n<p>What began as a small act of kindness sparked by a single photo has turned into a movement that\u2019s making tangible improvements to the daily lives of countless people.
