Welcome to the new <em>not normal,<\/em> where the Trump administration invests millions of dollars in advertising to persuade people who have already voted and advance its agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you\u2019ve seen the commercial from the Department of Homeland Security featuring its newly appointed leader, Kristi Noem (the former Governor of South Dakota). The anti-immigrant spot has been running regularly since January.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"WARNING - Domestic\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hezXQvjzCkQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semafor.com\/article\/02\/18\/2025\/homeland-security-budgets-200m-for-new-border-ad-campaign\">Semafor<\/a>, the Department of Homeland Security has allocated $200 million to peddle this warning. It looks like DOGE doesn\u2019t see this heavily publicized threat from the administration as fraudulent or wasteful.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s agenda is also being actively touted by political action committees. Securing American Greatness, a pro-Trump nonprofit group that is not required to disclose its donors, is running the following ad, which sadly plays fast and loose with the facts.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SAG5825DMMH YT\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f4Dv_q3FY54?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell Congress this is a good deal for America. Support President Trump\u2019s agenda to get our economy back on track,\u201d the ad says. I appreciate the call to action, but is it necessary? Is it genuine? I ask because <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/5311735-house-freedom-caucus-eyes-deal-to-unlock-trump-agenda-bill-white-house-demurs\/\">so few members of his party<\/a> appear ready to defy the president and defeat his \u201cBig Beautiful Bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, there\u2019s a huge price to pay by crossing Donald Trump,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/03\/10\/trump-maga-inc-power-fundraising\">said<\/a> Republican strategist Corry Bliss, who formerly led the Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC. \u201cWhen you combine a 92% approval rating among Republican voters with unlimited money, that equals: \u2018Yes, sir.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s emphasize two words: <strong>Unlimited money<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/05\/09\/trump-ad-tax-cut-plan-budget-bill\">Axios<\/a> reports that <span data-schema=\"smart-brevity\">Trump\u2019s \u201ccash-flush political operation has $500 million to spend.\u201d That\u2019s in addition to the money that Homeland Security and the pro-Trump super PACS are spending.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at the glowing endorsement in this spot from Elon Musk\u2019s America PAC.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Thank You President Trump\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dv6TYTYj_NI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s taking on the ruling elite and returning the rule of the people. Under his leadership, we are respected again. Thank you, President Trump, for saving the American dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Excuse me? Advertising is rarely believable or trustworthy. Ads from every corner of the business world make claims every day that the brand can\u2019t fulfill. We know this and view the ads with a built-in eye roll. But the three ads above are, like most things Don Trump, <em>way over the top<\/em>. His immigration policy is blatantly illegal and racist. His economic package benefits billionaires only. And confidence in America and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/view-with-moodys-downgrade-us-loses-treasured-aaa-credit-rating-2025-05-16\/\">the American dollar<\/a> is at an all-time low.<\/p>\n<p>You can make your ads say whatever you want, and brands do, but that doesn\u2019t mean the ads are moving people to believe or buy. In Trump\u2019s case, it\u2019s interesting that he feels the need to spend on advertising at all when he\u2019s already proven how effective \u201cflooding the zone\u201d is as a media strategy. By being outrageous and unpredictable, he controls the narrative. Congress and the courts do his bidding, and millions of Americans are all in.
