Blink and you might miss it: A new robot developed by college students can solve a Rubik\u2019s Cube in 0.103 seconds, setting a new world record.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe solve in 103 milliseconds,\u201d says Matthew Patrohay, one of the electrical and computer engineering undergraduates at Purdue University who designed and built the robot, in an announcement<\/a> from the university. \u201cA human blink takes about 200 to 300 milliseconds. So, before you even realize it\u2019s moving, we\u2019ve solved it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The high-speed robotic system\u2014named \u201cPurdubik\u2019s Cube\u201d\u2014now holds the Guinness World Record for the\u00a0fastest robot to solve a puzzle cube<\/a>. Patrohay, along with fellow students Junpei Ota, Aden Hurd and Alex Berta, officially set the record in a laboratory on the university\u2019s campus in West Lafayette, Indiana, on April 21.<\/p>\n

Purdubik\u2019s Cube handily beat the previous record of 0.305 seconds, which was set last year<\/a> by a Mitsubishi Electric robot.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The students] said, \u2018You know what? I think we can do better,\u2019\u201d says Milind Kulkarni<\/a>, who leads the university\u2019s electrical and computer engineering department, in a video<\/a> accompanying the statement.<\/p>\n

Though developing the robot was a team effort, it was Patrohay who initially spearheaded the project. His love affair with the scrambled, multicolored puzzle cube dates back to the fourth grade.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a competition, and you get a prize if you could solve it, and I could never solve it,\u201d he tells NPR<\/a>\u2019s Ailsa Chang. \u201cAnd I wanted to win the prize, so a few friends and I tried to learn how to solve it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, while he was in high school, he heard about a pair of MIT students<\/a> who\u2019d designed a robot that solved a Rubik\u2019s Cube in 0.380 seconds in 2018. He was immediately intrigued.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought, \u2018Hey, someday, I should try and beat that,\u2019 and here I am,\u201d he tells NPR.<\/p>\n
