Climate change is increasingly threatening wild animals around the world, according to a new study.

Researchers warn that rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and habitat changes are putting many animal species at risk.

The new study published on Tuesday in BioScience reveals that more than 3,500 animal species are threatened by climate change.

Researchers from Oregon State University analyzed data on over 70,000 species, finding that climate change poses a significant risk to global biodiversity.

The study highlights that at least 25% of species in six different animal classes, including arachnids, centipedes, corals, and jellyfish, are vulnerable to climate change.

Ocean animals are particularly at risk, as the oceans absorb most of the heat from global warming, making it difficult for these animals to escape unhealthy conditions.

Lead author Professor William Ripple stated, “We’re at the start of an existential crisis for the Earth’s wild animals.”

While overexploitation and habitat loss have been the primary threats to animals, climate change is emerging as a third major threat.

The researchers warn that extreme weather events can cause sudden and severe impacts on animal populations. Heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, and floods can lead to mass mortality and disrupt ecosystems.

The study also emphasizes the need to address knowledge gaps in understanding the full extent of climate change’s impact on wildlife. Many species may be at risk, but sufficient data is lacking to assess their vulnerability accurately.

Protecting habitats, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and creating wildlife corridors can help species adapt to changing environments.

The Animal Reader is an independent animal news platform based in the Netherlands.
