But when the Spanish artist brought his drawings and notes for <em>Giraffes on Horseback Salad<\/em>, as he called it, to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the studio decided it would be impossible to produce.<\/p>\n<p>Now, nearly 90 years later, Dal\u00ed\u2019s abandoned film is finally coming together\u2014produced not by MGM, but by artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/thedali.org\/about-the-museum\/timeline\/\">Dal\u00ed Museum<\/a> in Florida is partnering with <a href=\"https:\/\/goodbysilverstein.com\/\">Goodby Silverstein &amp; Partners<\/a>, a San Francisco-based advertising agency, to bring the project to life using Dal\u00ed\u2019s surviving notes and Google\u2019s A.I. tools. While the film is still in development, a trailer was released on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8u6O60MtswM\">YouTube<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSalvador Dal\u00ed said that he would be remembered for the words he wrote even more than for his paintings,\u201d says Hank Hine, director of the Dal\u00ed Museum, in a statement. \u201cThis technology, in the respectful hands of artists, allows Dal\u00ed\u2019s imagined world, locked in language, to erupt into visibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>Giraffes on Horseback Salad, Inspired by Salvador Dal\u00ed&#8217;s Screenplay | Official Trailer<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/8u6O60MtswM\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"8u6O60MtswM\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Best known for his melting clocks in the painting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/works\/79018\"><em>The Persistence of Memory<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(1931), Dal\u00ed was a leading 20th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/essays\/surrealism\">Surrealist<\/a> artist and filmmaker. Working with the Spanish director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Luis-Bunuel\">Luis Bu\u00f1uel<\/a>, he wrote the screenplays for several Surrealist films, including <em>An Andalusian Dog <\/em>(1929) and<em> The Golden Age <\/em>(1930).<\/p>\n<p>In 1936, Dal\u00ed met <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1964\/09\/29\/archives\/harpo-marx-the-silent-comedian-is-dead-at-70-blondwigged.html\">Harpo Marx<\/a> in Paris, where the American comedian was in the midst of a publicity tour. Even though they didn\u2019t speak the same language, the two men quickly connected. Dal\u00ed began working on <em>Giraffes on Horseback Salad <\/em>with the Marx Brothers in mind. In 1937, he flew to the United States to pitch the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Harpo\u2019s son, Bill Marx, was a small child when he stumbled upon a copy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marx-brothers.org\/marxology\/giraffes.htm\">script<\/a>. As he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/04\/07\/710032236\/salvador-dal-meets-the-marx-brothers-in-giraffes-on-horseback-salad\">NPR<\/a>\u2019s Peter Breslow in 2019, \u201cI started reading it, and I really couldn\u2019t make heads or tails of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story follows a Spanish businessman named Jimmy who falls in love with a faceless \u201cSurrealist woman\u201d who \u201cdraws him into her universe, one that is vibrant, chaotic and boundless,\u201d according to the Dal\u00ed Museum. \u201cBut as their worlds begin to merge, so does the conflict\u2014blurring the line between imagination and destruction. Mayer<\/a>, the meeting \u201cdid not go well,\u201d according to Josh Frank and Tim Heidecker\u2019s 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/539900\/giraffes-on-horseback-salad-by-josh-frank-adapted-with-tim-heidecker-illustrated-by-manuela-pertega\/\">graphic novel adaptation<\/a>\u00a0of the script.<\/p>\n<p>The studio rejected the script for its impracticality, while Groucho Marx rejected it for lack of humor, saying, \u201cIt won\u2019t play,\u201d per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/03\/24\/705876497\/giraffes-on-horseback-salad-tells-the-lost-story-of-harpo-marx-and-salvador-dal\">NPR<\/a>\u2019s Etelka Lehoczky.<\/p>\n<p>Could<em> Giraffes on Horseback Salad<\/em> play for a 21st-century audience? The new film pulls from Dal\u00ed\u2019s surviving notes and sketches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBringing this vision to life required not only advanced technology, but also a deep understanding of Dal\u00ed\u2019s artistic language,\u201d says the museum in the statement. \u201cEvery surreal element had to be carefully reconstructed to reflect his original intent, ensuring that what was once fragmented and forgotten now comes together as a cohesive cinematic experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/trNjbZr5kYvBpS-QuE9ncgc_Fvg=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(1920x1097:1921x1098)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/69\/5c\/695cfecf-a7c8-417e-b67c-ab97e20be015\/cover_dali-giraffes_ceo_keynote.jpg\" alt=\"Goodby Silverstein &amp; Partners\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      The new film was announced in early April.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">Goodby Silverstein &amp; Partners<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, Ben Davis, a critic for <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/giraffes-on-horseback-salad-google-ai-2630995\"><em>Artnet<\/em><\/a>, writes that the new A.I. interpretation is full of \u201cchintzy sub-sub-Surrealist imagery\u201d that has \u201clittle to do with Dali\u2019s original vision.\u201d For example, Dal\u00ed\u2019s script says the face of the \u201cSurrealist woman\u201d is never revealed. But in the new trailer, as a narrator says \u201cSurrealist woman,\u201d a female face fills the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Davis cites visual errors in the trailer\u2014like a misshapen human ear, a harp string passing through a finger and incorrect Roman numerals on a clock\u2014and argues that \u201cthe madcap feeling of Dal\u00ed\u2019s idea \u2026 has been processed into something with the feeling of a vacuous fashion shoot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Giraffes on Horseback Salad<\/em> isn\u2019t the first collaboration between the Dal\u00ed Museum and Goodby Silverstein &amp; Partners. Last year, they announced a project called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/get-ready-to-chat-with-an-ai-salvador-dali-via-lobster-phone-180984168\/\">Ask Dal\u00ed<\/a>,\u201d a functional replica of the artist\u2019s famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/artworks\/dali-lobster-telephone-t03257\">lobster telephone<\/a> at the museum. When visitors picked up the phone, they could speak with an A.I. version of Dal\u00ed, which was trained on old writings and archival audio. In late 2022, the two groups released \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thedali.org\/exhibit\/dream-tapestry\/\">Dream Tapestry<\/a>,\u201d which generated Surrealist art based on visitors\u2019 descriptions of their dreams.
