Look to the children\u2019s coloring books that were issued by various pulp publishers during that decade. Today we present a gallery of covers \u2013 for characters that I didn\u2019t mention (or barely mentioned) in last week\u2019s post. In some cases the coloring book images are better than the actual cartoons (<em>Sinbad Jr.<\/em> is one) \u2013 in other cases, the coloring book art might discourage you from ever sampling the show (<em>Super Six<\/em> is an example of that). That said, here\u2019s a bunch of baby boomer memories \u2013 in alphabetic order:<\/p>\n<p><strong>ASTRO BOY (NBC Enterprises)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Created by Osamu Tezuka in 1952 \u2013 and brought to television in 1963 with Tezuka in charge of the studio and stories \u2013 this was the first animated series made for Japan television, and the first anime brought to the US (by Fred Ladd). Like the dubbing \u2013 this cover is a little inaccurate (Astro\u2019s coloring: pink and yellow?). Great show \u2013 better than the coloring book would suggest. <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Astro-Boy-Coloring.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"511\" height=\"592\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Astro-Boy-Coloring.jpg 511w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Astro-Boy-Coloring-259x300.jpg 259w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Astro-Boy-Coloring-129x150.jpg 129w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\"\/><\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #000000; height: 2px; border: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong>ASTRONUT (Terrytoons)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A \u201cnew Terrytoon\u201d character, cashing in on the \u201cSpace Race\u201d trend of the 1960s \u2013 and somewhat ripping off the live action comedy series <em>My Favorirte Martian<\/em> \u2013 the character was introduced in a 1963 <em>Deputy Dawg<\/em> cartoon, and was spun off into his own shorts distributed to theaters by Fox in 1964. <em>The Astronut Show<\/em> was a syndicated by CBS in 1965. <em>Astronut<\/em> looks somewhat cool, but don\u2019t be fooled by the sci-fi graphics. Voiced by Shepherd Menkin \u2013 these <em>Crashcup<\/em> cartoons were incredibly clever \u2013 and unforgettable. Each episode featured Crashcup demonstrating how he invented common things \u2013 like \u201cbaseball\u201d and \u201cshoes\u201d. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Clyde-Crashcup-Coloring.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"489\" height=\"589\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Clyde-Crashcup-Coloring.jpg 489w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Clyde-Crashcup-Coloring-249x300.jpg 249w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Clyde-Crashcup-Coloring-125x150.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\"\/><\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #000000; height: 2px; border: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong>COURAGEOUS CAT (Sam Singer)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Good \u2018ol Sam Singer (the \u201cEd Wood\u201d of animation). Teaming up with Batman creator Bob Kane \u2013 a few years before Kane\u2019s greatest creation (with Bill Finger) struck it rich as a weekly live action show \u2013 Kane ripped-off himself in conceiving <em>Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse<\/em>. The super hero duo rode around in a Cat Mobile and lived in a Cat-Cave. And fought several outrageous villains \u2013 but mainly \u201cThe Frog\u201d. To say this is the best show Singer produced is not the compliment you think it is. Especially if you know his work. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/courageous_cat_cover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"405\" height=\"527\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/courageous_cat_cover.jpg 405w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/courageous_cat_cover-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/courageous_cat_cover-115x150.jpg 115w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\"\/><\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #000000; height: 2px; border: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong>CRUSADER RABBIT (Jay Ward)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jay Ward and Alex Anderson (Paul Terry\u2019s nephew) created this \u2013 the first cartoon series for television \u2013 in 1949. A mainstay of 1950s kids shows, Crusader Rabbit and Rags the Tiger were definitely the template for all the cartoon duos to come. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Crusader-Rabbit-coloring-book-600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"702\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Crusader-Rabbit-coloring-book-600.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Crusader-Rabbit-coloring-book-600-256x300.jpg 256w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Crusader-Rabbit-coloring-book-600-128x150.jpg 128w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"\/><\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #000000; height: 2px; border: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong>THE FUNNY COMPANY (Pantomime Pictures)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Major warning \u2013 any show that has to tell you in its title that it\u2019s \u201cfunny\u201d\u2026 isn\u2019t. This series from 1963 was one of the first (if not <em>the<\/em> first) educational \u2018toons that were being encouraged during this era \u2013 as cartoons were further perceived as children\u2019s fare. Others followed (including <em>Do-Do The Kid From Outer Space, The Big World of Little Adam<\/em> and <em>Max The 2000 Year Old Mouse<\/em>). I recall liking the character designs, the voices (by Dick Beals, Nancy Wible, Hal Smith, among others) and even that opening theme song \u2013 but the <em>Funny Company<\/em> cartoons themselves were (to me) a BORE. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/funny-company-coloring-book-580.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"657\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/funny-company-coloring-book-580.jpg 580w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/funny-company-coloring-book-580-265x300.jpg 265w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/funny-company-coloring-book-580-132x150.jpg 132w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\"\/><\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #000000; height: 2px; border: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong>HOPPITY HOOPER (Jay Ward)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hoppity Hooper<\/em> was Jay Ward\u2019s follow up to Rocky &amp; Bullwinkle, made for ABC Saturday morning, and thus skewed a little more towards the kids. That said, it\u2019s still a fun show that doesn\u2019t deserve the obscurity it seems to have today.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hoppity-hooper.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"582\" height=\"757\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hoppity-hooper.jpg 582w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hoppity-hooper-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/hoppity-hooper-115x150.jpg 115w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 582px) 100vw, 582px\"\/><\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #000000; height: 2px; border: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong>KIMBA, THE WHITE LION (NBC Enterprises)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Kimba The White Lion<\/em> was Osamu\u2019s Tezuka\u2019s show, based on his famous \u201cJungle Emperor\u201d manga. Like Astro Boy, NBC picked it up for US syndication and hired Fred Ladd to dub it in English. The original Japanese series ran 52 episodes \u2013 an additional \u201cseason\u201d of 26 episodes featuring Kimba as an adult character were held off from the original 1966 syndication. This show was, I believe, the first anime series produced in color. It has a huge following \u2013 particularly among \u201cfurries\u201d \u2013 and was the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/TrueFilm\/comments\/ez921l\/a_brief_guide_to_the_simbakimba_controversy\/\">center of controversy<\/a> over similarities in Disney\u2019s <em>The Lion King<\/em> (1994). <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kimba-coloring-book.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"497\" height=\"637\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kimba-coloring-book.jpg 497w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kimba-coloring-book-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kimba-coloring-book-117x150.jpg 117w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 497px) 100vw, 497px\"\/><\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #000000; height: 2px; border: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong>KING LEONARDO AND HIS SHORT SUBJECTS (Total Television)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first series from Total Television \u2013 a company sharing the animation services of Gamma Studios with Jay Ward. An all-star New York-based voice cast which included Jackson Beck and Allen Swift. The Total shows aren\u2019t as funny as the Ward shows \u2013 but they have their charms. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/King-Leonardo-Coloring.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"652\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/King-Leonardo-Coloring.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/King-Leonardo-Coloring-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/King-Leonardo-Coloring-115x150.jpg 115w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\"\/><\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #000000; height: 2px; border: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong>KING FEATURES TRILOGY (AND POPEYE)<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>If rushing to produce 220 made-for-TV Popeye cartoons in 1960 wasn\u2019t enough, producer Al Brodax pushed through 150 more cartoons utilizing several other comic strip favorites in King Features Syndicate\u2019s arsenal: <em>Krazy Kat, Snuffy Smith<\/em> and <em>Beetle Baily<\/em> (50 cartoons each). There are nuggets of gold in these if one wants to wade through them \u2013 Jim Tyer\u2019s animation in the <em>Snuffy\u2019s<\/em>, Gene Deitch\u2019s animation and art direction in the <em>Krazy\u2019s<\/em> \u2013 and Alan Melvin and Howie Morris having a lot of vocal fun in the <em>Beetle Bailey\u2019s<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/King-Features-TV-Cartoons-coloring.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"544\" height=\"740\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/King-Features-TV-Cartoons-coloring.jpg 544w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/King-Features-TV-Cartoons-coloring-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/King-Features-TV-Cartoons-coloring-110x150.jpg 110w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 544px) 100vw, 544px\"\/><\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #000000; height: 2px; border: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong>LAUREL AND HARDY (Hanna-Barbera\/Larry Harmon)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We all love Stan and Ollie \u2013 but it\u2019s unanimous that these cartoons don\u2019t come close to keeping their spirit alive. Larry Harmon should never have been granted the rights to exploit Laurel &amp; Hardy\u2026 but he got them. Hanna Barbera produced the cartoons as a work-for-hire. The shorts (there are 250 of them) are not generally available \u2013 and not many people care. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Laurel-Hardy-Coloring.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"506\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Laurel-Hardy-Coloring.jpg 368w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Laurel-Hardy-Coloring-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/cartoonresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Laurel-Hardy-Coloring-109x150.jpg 109w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\"\/><\/p>\n<hr style=\"color: #000000; background-color: #000000; height: 2px; border: none;\"\/>\n<p><strong>MARINE BOY (Seven Arts)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Marine Boy<\/em> is back on MeTV Toons. It was dubbed by the same team who did <em>Speed Racer<\/em> but it doesn\u2019t have the same charm. That said \u2013 I like the show. Helena. Newton. The animation is crazy limited \u2013 but funny drawings abound. The Rankin Bass <em>Tales Of The Wizard Of Oz<\/em> was a good attempt to bring them to animation in a stylized way.
