The forest once brimmed with life, says Bashe Nuhem, a member of the Indigenous Qom community, but then came a road, and soon after that logging companies. \u201cIt was an invasion. Loggers came without any consultation and families moved away. Those that stayed were left with only a cemetery of trees,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The Gran Chaco is South America\u2019s second-largest forest after the Amazon; its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/stories\/2025\/03\/gran-chaco-south-americas-hidden-biome\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">100m hectares<\/a> (247m acres) stretch across Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and Bolivia. Afterwards, they set fire to the land, killing everything<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<footer><cite>Natay Collet, park ranger<\/cite><\/footer>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">About 7m hectares of native forests were lost in Argentina between 1998 and 2023, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argentina.gob.ar\/ambiente\/bosques\/alerta-deforestacion\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">official data<\/a>, about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-argentina-stateless\/2023\/02\/c21b71ef-deforestation-in-northern-argentina.-annual-report-2022.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">80%<\/a> of which was in the Gran Chaco. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-argentina-stateless\/2025\/03\/1e249a28-deforestacion-en-el-norte-de-argentina-informe-anual-2024.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">New figures<\/a> from Greenpeace show that nearly 150,000 hectares (370,000 acres) were destroyed in the forest in 2024 \u2013 a 10% increase from the previous year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Strip after strip has been turned into farmland or burned, local people have been forced from their homes and wild animals are being caged in by fences. The only way to describe it, Greenpeace says, is a \u201cforest emergency\u201d. Afterwards, they set fire to the land, killing everything. All that is left is a desert,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Collet says deforestation has happened since \u201cthe first colonists came\u201d but that for the past 15 years \u201ccompanies have come with everything they have\u201d. \u201cThere is no hour of rest, it happens all hours, every day,\u201d she says, adding that better technology and chainsaws have accelerated the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Juan Diego Ayala, an environmental researcher and member of the collective Somos Monte, explains how much deforestation goes under the radar. \u201cIt\u2019s called pinprick land grabs: instead of deforesting thousands of hectares at a time, they will take under 500 hectares at a time,\u201d he says. \u201cIt is difficult to detect until it\u2019s too late. It looks like nothing is happening, but everything is happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"b3599d57-c50a-4a87-a2ca-674aa572105e\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1tx6u99\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Changes in the ecosystem of the forest can have major implications for its inhabitants, such as the giant armadillo, an animal that is thought to breed only every three years.<\/span> Photograph: Alamy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The Gran Chaco is home to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/magazine\/issues\/summer-2018\/articles\/exploring-the-gran-chaco\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">wide range of wildlife<\/a>, including maned wolves, ocelots, tapirs, armadillos, capybaras and howler monkeys. With their habitat shrinking, many species are now at risk, biologists warn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cWe have animals in immediate danger of being lost from these parks for ever, like the Chacoan peccary, the giant armadillo, the ocelot. But I think that today, given the current situation, all of the animals are in danger,\u201d says Collet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The jaguar is one of the most vulnerable species, with conservationists estimating its range in Argentina <a href=\"https:\/\/ora.ox.ac.uk\/objects\/uuid:ae31cf82-2be5-42eb-8231-6e78391d22cf\/files\/rjm214q15w\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">has shrunk<\/a> by more than 95% in the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/03\/ambitious-conservation-projects-pave-the-way-for-argentinas-jaguar-recovery\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">past 150 years<\/a>. The animals lose their shelter, their prey, they are forced to migrate,\u201d says Alicia Delgado, a biologist at Rewilding Argentina. \u201cWhen the land is no longer connected \u2013 when it is split by roads and farms \u2013 animals have to move through populated areas. People get scared and hunt them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Collet explains that howler monkeys, which rarely leave the canopies, need tree connectivity to find resources and survive. She also worries about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/feb\/21\/arnaud-desbiez-save-giant-armadillo-aoe\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">giant armadillo<\/a>, which is thought to breed only every three years. \u201cA major change in the ecosystem can have a huge impact,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Deforestation worsens the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/granthaminstitute\/explainers\/whats-redd-and-will-it-help-tackle-climate-change\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">climate crisis<\/a>, as carbon stored by trees is released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. Nuhem says it has had a more immediate impact on the climate, too. \u201cNow we have intense heat, the wind is stronger, the rainfall is scarce and the land is dry,\u201d she says. The state now requires provincial governments to decide which areas should be protected, set limits on deforestation and devote resources to conservation. But Hern\u00e1n Giardini, coordinator of Greenpeace\u2019s forest campaign, says, \u201cthe law is not enough, and our justice system is not working to defend the forest\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The deforestation also continues despite a 2019 ruling by the Chaco courts ordering its suspension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cDeforestation has been prohibited in Chaco since 2019 \u2013 the courts banned it, but it is never enforced,\u201d says Enrique Viale, an environmental lawyer and president of the Argentine Association of Environmental Lawyers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"06e098d0-5e73-447b-b311-7829268bc057\" data-spacefinder-role=\"showcase\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-5h0uf4\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-16a696t\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">Tree logs hidden behind bushes.<\/span> Photograph: Harriet Barber<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">A recently retired police officer tells the Guardian that once, when he was in the process of confiscating trucks filled with illegally cut trees, he received a call from a government official. \u201cHe told me to let the men \u2013 and the trees and trucks \u2013 go,\u201d he says. \u201cWhenever I tried to do the right thing, to stop the deforestation, I was punished, while those that committed the crimes walked free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Nuhem says that local people attempting to prevent illegal deforestation have faced threats and violence for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cWe started filming what was happening, collecting information and talking about it on our community radio. But then people started calling up the station and threatening us. They beat her and raped her,\u201d Nuhem says. \u201cShe left the group and the village. The case was never solved and a lot of people helping to report the deforestation fell silent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Collet says illegal deforestation is treated with impunity because \u201cthe government sees Chaco as a resource to be used and exploited\u201d. \u201cThe only thing the government sees in the forest is money,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/argentina-judge-halts-deforestation-chaco-forest-rare-move-2024-08-19\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">main products<\/a> of the Chaco province are timber, soya beans, beef, cotton and tannins.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The Chaco government did not respond to multiple requests for comment, but it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanacion.com.ar\/sociedad\/desmontes-en-chaco-leandro-zdero-gobernador-queremos-preservar-el-monte-pero-tambien-queremos-dejar-nid21082024\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">previously said<\/a> it has seized bulldozers and suspended clearing permits to prevent illegal deforestation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanacion.com.ar\/sociedad\/desmontes-en-chaco-leandro-zdero-gobernador-queremos-preservar-el-monte-pero-tambien-queremos-dejar-nid21082024\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">interview last year<\/a>, the governor of Chaco province, Leandro Zdero, said that the government \u201cwants to preserve the forest \u2026 but we also want to stop being poor\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Viale says the state and businesses justify deforestation by saying it leads to economic development<strong>. <\/strong>\u201cBut Chaco is one of the provinces with the most deforestation in Argentina, and also one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buenosairesherald.com\/society\/analysis-finds-55-of-argentines-and-7-in-10-kids-are-poor\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">poorest<\/a>,\u201d he says. \u201cEveryone mentions progress, but the bosses only enrich themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Viale and his team have filed a criminal complaint about the deforestation, which is with Argentine prosecutors to investigate. \u201cIt is the first time in Chaco we have had a case of this magnitude,\u201d Viale says. \u201cWe want to break the cycle of impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"57fa55ee-446e-4f83-a5ff-b08673c935e7\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-spacefinder-type=\"model.dotcomrendering.pageElements.ImageBlockElement\" class=\"dcr-173mewl\"><figcaption data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" class=\"dcr-1tx6u99\"><span class=\"dcr-1inf02i\"><svg width=\"18\" height=\"13\" viewbox=\"0 0 18 13\"><path d=\"M18 3.5v8l-1.5 1.5h-15l-1.5-1.5v-8l1.5-1.5h3.5l2-2h4l2 2h3.5l1.5 1.5zm-9 7.5c1.9 0 3.5-1.6 3.5-3.5s-1.6-3.5-3.5-3.5-3.5 1.6-3.5 3.5 1.6 3.5 3.5 3.5z\"\/><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"dcr-1qvd3m6\">The aftereffects: a deforested area near Las Lomitas, in Formosa, Argentina.<\/span> Photograph: Agust\u00edn Marcarian\/Reuters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">But the Indigenous people, who consider the trees to be gods, say time is running out. \u201cDeforestation is wiping out our cultural practices, our traditional knowledge, like our medicine and our language,\u201d says Nuhem. \u201cWe are becoming weak, just like the forest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\"><em>Find more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/series\/the-age-of-extinction\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">age of extinction coverage here<\/a>, and follow the biodiversity reporters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/phoebe-weston\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Phoebe Weston<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/patrick-greenfield\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Patrick Greenfield<\/a> in the Guardian app for more nature coverage<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the Gran Chaco forest, vast green expanses \u2013 home to jaguars, giant armadillos and howler monkeys \u2013 have turned to fields of dust.
