Kay Ivey has quietly done the unthinkable \u2014 she\u2019s governed.<\/p>\n<p>Love her, dislike her or stand somewhere in between, one thing is clear: she remains the most effective chief executive Alabama has seen in decades. While others give fiery floor speeches or chase headlines, Ivey stays focused on the hard, often thankless work of policy. And in Montgomery, that still counts for something.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s often labeled \u201cMeemaw,\u201d a nickname that folksy Southern charm invites \u2014 but that\u2019s where the illusion ends. Anyone who\u2019s worked around her knows she\u2019s no genteel Southern grandmother content to smile and nod. Cross her, and you\u2019ll find out quickly that she didn\u2019t get to the Governor\u2019s Mansion by playing to stereotypes. She knows her mind. She knows how to use power. Not for show \u2014 but for results.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s legislative session was no exception.<\/p>\n<p>After speaking with Gina Maiola, the governor\u2019s communications director, it\u2019s clear that Ivey came into 2025 with a plan \u2014 and left with results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor Ivey had an impressive legislative session, and she was able to deliver several wins for Alabamians,\u201d Maiola said. It\u2019s not just spin. The governor\u2019s legislative checklist has more green marks than red pens.<\/p>\n<p>With the very first bill she signed into law \u2014 the controversial \u201cWhat is a Woman\u201d bill \u2014 Ivey underscored her ongoing commitment to what she and her supporters call Alabama family values. You may not agree with the bill, but you can\u2019t say she didn\u2019t act with conviction.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In her 2025 State of the State address, Ivey did what few elected leaders will \u2014 she made promises tied to real people. She told the story of Army veteran Jae Barclay, who overcame addiction, homelessness and despair. \u201cWe must do more for our veterans. We must do better,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>And she did. This year, Ivey pushed legislation that will open four new veterans resource centers across the state. These one-stop hubs will connect veterans with mental health services, housing support, job training and VA benefits \u2014 not just honoring their service, but helping them live with dignity.<\/p>\n<p>That same practical focus showed up in her push for paid parental leave for teachers and state workers \u2014 a long-overdue win for working families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe championed the bill to provide long-overdue paid parental leave for our teachers and state workers,\u201d Maiola said. In a state where family values are often preached but rarely legislated, Ivey made them real.<\/p>\n<p>She put real money behind real needs \u2014 core services, education and working Alabamians. She delivered targeted tax relief. She gave local leaders more tools to protect fast-growing coastal communities. While not everyone agrees with her approach, she took further steps to enforce immigration laws and strengthen election security \u2014 not with speeches but with signed bills.<\/p>\n<p>On education, Ivey has shown consistent and serious leadership. For years, she\u2019s worked to expand early childhood education, improve literacy and math proficiency, and create clearer pathways to college and career. She\u2019s not content to patch holes \u2014 she\u2019s building a new foundation.<\/p>\n<p>With the passage of the FOCUS Act this session, she took another step \u2014 reinforcing classroom discipline, creating safer school environments and ensuring that teachers, not bureaucrats, set the tone.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But that\u2019s just part of her broader vision.<\/p>\n<p>Ivey has long pushed for dual enrollment programs, technical certification and strong partnerships between high schools, community colleges and Alabama industry. Her focus isn\u2019t only on diplomas \u2014 it\u2019s on futures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has always made education a top priority,\u201d Maiola said. \u201cShe believes every Alabama student should have the tools to succeed \u2014 whether that means going to college or straight into a meaningful career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mindset \u2014 focused on outcomes, not optics \u2014 is what sets Ivey apart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing into the Session, Governor Ivey stated bolstering public safety would be her number one priority,\u201d Maiola added. \u201cAnd in working with legislators on both sides of the aisle, she signed into law several bills to do just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ended the session with a flourish. As the \u201cSafe Alabama\u201d public safety package cleared the Legislature, her \u201cBack the Blue\u201d bill passed in the final hours \u2014 with House members staying late into the night to get it to her desk. That doesn\u2019t happen unless a governor is in command.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not that she always gets it right \u2014 no one does. But Kay Ivey governs like someone who understands the job: not to perform, but to protect.
