However, some think we have reached the limits of life expectancy, while others think there is much more to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/longeviquest.com\/2025\/04\/inah-canabarro-lucas-worlds-oldest-person-dies-at-116\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oldest living person passed away April 30th <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at 116 \u2013 just 39 days shy of her 117th birthday. Those who knew Sister Inah Canabarro Lucas cite her piousness, lifelong interest in learning and education, and even her love of football (soccer) as keys to her longevity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sister Inah, a Brazilian nun, was born on June 8, 1908. At the time, she was so frail that many thought she would die young.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some life extension advocates think she did.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in Life Expectancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A little less than 200 years ago, humans typically lived about 50 years or less, according to research published in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1728-4457.2005.00083.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Population and Development Review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, as medicine gained more success in combating pandemics and contagions, lifespans grew. Life expectancy from birth increased at a rate of three years every decade in the twentieth century. Whereas it only increased once every century for 2,000 years before that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might think the upward trajectory of the human lifespan would continue given its rocket-like acceleration over the last century. However, the 30-year increase in longevity during that period may have reached its limits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research from the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43587-024-00702-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Aging<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has determined that the dramatic extension of life in the twentieth century was due to advances in medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonetheless, those advances have reached their limits, according to the authors. Further advances in life extension will come from other scientific pursuits, such as the development of cell and DNA repair.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifespan Increase Slowed<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Longevity is still increasing in the twenty-first century, but at a much slower pace than last century, according to the UIC study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur analysis suggests that survival to age 100\u2009years is unlikely to exceed 15% for females and 5% for males,\u201d according to the study\u2019s lead author, S. Jay Olshansky of the UIC School of Public Health.. The study determined that the average life expectancy is 85 years. That is 88 years for females and 82 years for males.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur result overturns the conventional wisdom that the natural longevity endowment for our species is somewhere on the horizon ahead of us \u2014 a life expectancy beyond where we are today,\u201d Olshansky said. \u201cInstead, it\u2019s behind us \u2014 somewhere in the 30- to 60-year range. We\u2019ve now proven that modern medicine is yielding incrementally smaller improvements in longevity even though medical advances are occurring at breakneck speed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But On The Other Hand . . .<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">William Mair, professor of molecular metabolism at Harvard, agrees with the findings of the UIC team. However, he cautions that we should not abandon other avenues for extending life. He calls these intriguing but unproven possibilities moon shots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor example, looking at strategies that could turn adult cells back into stem cells. These <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/life-expectancy-may-be-reaching-upper-limits-for-now\/#:~:text=We%20also%20need%20to%20invest,would%20be%20a%20critical%20mistake.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rejuvenation techniques may one day be used to slow cell and tissue aging and even revert cells to more youthful states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d said Mair. \u201cThese are high-risk, high-reward projects. My concern with the [Nature Aging] paper is that it will lead people to believe these moonshots are impossible, so we should not invest in them. That would be a critical mistake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disease And Longevity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Eric Topol disagrees. He is the founder of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scripps Research Translational Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his new book<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Super-Agers\/Eric-Topol\/9781668067666\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Agers<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published earlier this month, Topol argues that the means to increase lifespan are already here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topol\u2019s thesis is that most deaths among older people are slowly developing diseases. Those diseases include cancer, cardiovascular, and neurological diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe common threads are these three diseases take a long time,\u201d Topol told Axios. \u201cThey all have the same pathogenesis or underpinnings, and we have new tools like we never had.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relatively simple, inexpensive tests and AI data analytics can identify who is at most risk for those diseases, according to Topol. As a result, doctors will be able to detect the diseases earlier and develop individual courses of prevention and treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another area for optimism is the use of GLP-1 drugs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re in a really power position now to achieve the fantasy of primary prevention,\u201d Topol said. \u201cTo be able to prevent a disease because at the individual level, you have this unique information about you, that\u2019s what\u2019s really bringing this into reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two Approaches To Aging and Longevity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topol\u2019s approach is not strictly life extension, according to Mair, but it does offer a significant benefit for those who want to live longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach will not increase the maximum upper limit of human lifespan,\u201d said Mair. \u201cWhat it can do is gradually increase the median lifespan so that more and more people can reach that upper limit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potential For Life Extension Remains<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicine may have reached its limits for life extension, but science still holds possibilities. Those possibilities center on cell and tissue rejuvenation. Although all options are on the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no intellectual reason why we can\u2019t break this upper limit of human lifespan of about 90 years,\u201d said Mair. \u201cPublic health hasn\u2019t broken it yet, because that\u2019s not what the goal of public health is. Could it be broken through targeting the biology of aging? Quite possibly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olshansky agrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a glass ceiling, not a brick wall,\u201d Olshansky said. \u201cThere\u2019s plenty of room for improvement: for reducing risk factors, working to eliminate disparities and encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles \u2013 all of which can enable people to live longer and healthier. We can push through this glass health and longevity ceiling with geroscience and efforts to slow the effects of aging.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happy 20,000th Birthday! (Don\u2019t Try To Blow Out The Candles)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no consensus on how long humans can live.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study published in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-021-23014-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature Communications<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">determined that human beings max out at 120 to 150. We simply lose the ability to fully recover after a physical setback. Scientists call that physiological resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other researchers feel that physiological resilience, along with cell and tissue decline, can be overcome. If they are right, that could buy you a little more time \u2013 say 1,000 years. One researcher, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jo\u00e3o Pedro de Magalh\u00e3es, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-old-can-humans-get\/#:~:text=Jo%C3%A3o%20Pedro%20de%20Magalh%C3%A3es%2C%20a,death%2C%E2%80%9D%20he%20says%20bluntly.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even thinks 20,000 years is possible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jo\u00e3o Pedro de Magalh\u00e3es is a professor of molecular biogerontology at the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing at the University of Birmingham in England.
