(photo by Kat Day)<\/span><\/em><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span>Back in the 1990s, the Crossroads Art District was about 80% vacant buildings and warehouses. <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JimLeedytheDocumentary\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"q2QVv oiVLY\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Jim Leedy,<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>an artist and art sculpture professor from the Kansas City Art Institute, started the <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.leedy-voulkos.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"q2QVv oiVLY\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Leedy Voulkos Art Center,<\/span><\/u><\/a><span>which was an establishing point for the Crossroads Art District. <\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span>Jim Leedy, artist and gallery owner, states on <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcur.org\/show\/central-standard\/2015-12-31\/how-kansas-citys-crossroads-became-an-arts-district-and-the-story-behind-first-fridays\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"q2QVv oiVLY\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>KCUR Central Standard<\/span><\/u><\/a><span> how he first opened a gallery in Westport and wanted to start an art center in Westport. Still, due to gentrification, and decided to keep looking. Leedy found a building down in the Crossroads and felt he had a way to help artists rent studios at an affordable price which would also help to pay the rent on the building. O\u2019Brien attended a luncheon at the Hereford House with a group of men that were part of the neighborhood committee. <\/span><\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcur.org\/show\/central-standard\/2015-12-31\/how-kansas-citys-crossroads-became-an-arts-district-and-the-story-behind-first-fridays\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"q2QVv oiVLY\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>Leedy wanted the district to have the proper nam<\/span><\/u><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcur.org\/show\/central-standard\/2015-12-31\/how-kansas-citys-crossroads-became-an-arts-district-and-the-story-behind-first-fridays\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"q2QVv oiVLY\" data-hook=\"web-link\"><span style=\"color:#bada55;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span>e, not Leedytown<\/span><\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#bada55;text-decoration:inherit\"><u style=\"text-decoration:underline\"><span> or Leedyville<\/span><\/u><\/span><span style=\"color:#bada55;text-decoration:inherit\"><span>.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:#ffffff;text-decoration:inherit\"><span> The name of the neighborhood had been lost, and it wasn\u2019t called \u201cDowntown.\u201d The name of the community was Crossroads.
