We counter this with joy and togetherness.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>This idea keeps coming up \u2013 let me go back\u2026 I\u2019ve been thinking about a conversation I had with some friends about\u00a0<strong>a key to successful organizing<\/strong>, even when you\u2019re\u00a0<em>feeling beat down<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s simple, it\u2019s easy to implement, and it\u2019s the kind of thing that makes you say \u201cright \u2013 of course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We call it<strong>\u00a0the Ministry of Love<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-c4aa-clipPath-heading has-base-color has-red-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-cc6664b90115d9100211f401a02dfc33\" id=\"what-is-the-ministry-of-love\">What is the Ministry of Love?<\/h2>\n<p>Fortunately, that conversation I mentioned? They were to meet people who came to our meetings. They were to call them later, check in with them. They were to make sure that our meetings didn\u2019t go on too long. They were to make sure that we basically had fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-base-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-42c46b850c7f319c4e7b29babba2a5b8\">And people would rotate through it. So all of us were in the Ministry of Love at one time or another. But I thought that was sort of a really brilliant idea to just say,\u00a0<strong>this is actually part of the movement. That we need to love each other.<\/strong>\u00a0And because it was the 90s, we made it ironic and called it the Ministry of Love. But the intent was very serious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-base-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0e0f1a44baa5989ee72ce92b543dcd3e\"><strong>Pat Jerido:<\/strong>\u00a0Especially\u00a0<strong>as a black person in America, my thinking has always been my longevity is my political act<\/strong>, right? That\u2019s giving it to the man. And so I\u2019ve always had that in my consciousness is something, yeah, I need to live long. Yeah, that\u2019s what I need to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-base-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8aa85cd8098e1931a0aaf9325e717f74\"><strong>Linda Sarsour:<\/strong>\u00a0We have something called the Sunshine Committee\u2026 whose job is \u2013 first of all, they don\u2019t forget your birthday. They keep track of your yearly anniversary that you\u2019re working there. And then they do something where randomly \u2013 it could be every six weeks \u2013 it\u2019s\u00a0<em>your day at the office<\/em>. So you walk into work one morning and then you find your face plastered everywhere. And it says , \u201cTHANK YOU KAYLA!\u201d And you open the door of your office and there\u2019s balloons and stuff all over your office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-base-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-da84ef85b0f9a5636b08d6829c602ebe\">And people think it\u2019s really simple. But if you see the faces of the people that are busting their butts every single day, I mean, especially our caseworkers, they work literally from the minute they walk in until they leave. And then\u00a0<strong>you walk into work and you\u2019re like, wait a minute, I have a hard job, but someone appreciates me and I\u2019m feeling loved, I\u2019m feeling embraced. It\u2019s so profound. I also spread a little joy (and surprise) by blasting Pat with a confetti canon.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Look, you gotta make sure every meeting is fun\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>because it has other benefits! Groups who enjoy getting together are more likely to meet consistently, stay motivated, stick together, work through tough times, and ultimately, be more effective over the long haul.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/c4aa.org\/2015\/07\/6-mani-pedi-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Check out that full podcast episode here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>There\u2019s a storm of bad news out there, so we can\u2019t forget to celebrate every win. Luckily for us, people frequently share victories and progress others don\u2019t always hear about. This year we\u2019re going to be sharing those stories with you.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Amid some bleak\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/19\/us\/politics\/trump-inauguration-protest-democrats.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Times reporting on the grassroots in 2025<\/a>, there was this bright spot:<\/p>\n<p>Ezra Levin, the executive director of Indivisible, an organization he co-founded in 2017 to channel grass-roots opposition to Mr. Trump, said\u00a0<strong>the group had registered more new local chapters since November than it had at any other point since 2017.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And then I was encouraged to read Levin say something we emphasize in our workshops:<\/p>\n<p>Indivisible urged its members to focus not just on Mr. Trump and Congress but also on local elected officials [\u2026] It conceded that \u201ctoo often in Trump 1.0, we embraced the aesthetics of protests instead of using them as part of a strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t start with a tactic,\u201d Mr. Levin said. \u201cYou should start with a goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levin participated of our very first Unstoppable Voters workshop.
