This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz—Malcolm X—whose life and legacy continue to resonate deeply within our communities. As a revolutionary thinker, a fierce advocate for human dignity, and a devout Muslim, Malcolm X’s journey from Malcolm Little to a global symbol of resistance embodies the transformative power of faith, truth, and justice.

At CAIR-Chicago, Malcolm X’s legacy is not merely a historical reference but a living inspiration that informs our mission and daily work.

His transformation from Malcolm Little to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz exemplifies the power of faith, education, and resilience in the face of systemic oppression. Like Malcolm, we believe in the necessity of speaking truth to power and in the transformative potential of community-led advocacy.

CAIR-Chicago’s Executive Director, Ahmed Rehab, has often drawn upon Malcolm X’s teachings in his public addresses and community engagement. Rehab’s leadership reflects Malcolm’s insistence on dignity and justice, particularly in challenging Islamophobia, racial profiling, and other forms of institutional discrimination. Under his guidance, CAIR-Chicago has become a platform for amplifying marginalized voices and building coalitions across racial and religious lines—an approach deeply rooted in Malcolm’s later vision of global solidarity.

In 2024, Rehab was honored with the Courage Award by the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago (CIOGC) during an event commemorating Malcolm X’s legacy. This recognition underscores the alignment between Rehab’s advocacy and Malcolm’s enduring principles.

Malcolm X’s centennial is not merely a moment of remembrance—it is a call to action. His life reminds us that justice is not given; it is earned through struggle, sacrifice, and unrelenting courage. At CAIR-Chicago, we remain committed to carrying forward that legacy by defending civil liberties, empowering communities, and challenging injustice wherever it arises.

As we reflect on Malcolm X’s enduring impact, we reaffirm our dedication to the principles he championed. His legacy lives on in every act of resistance, every voice raised against oppression, and every step taken toward a more just and equitable society.
