I shan\u2019t bother repeating the story<br \/>\nagain, but oversleeping that morning, if only by about <b>20 minutes,<\/b> rather put a<br \/>\nspanner in the works. Originally a<br \/>\nrow of three cottages dating back to <b>1430,<\/b> the <b>Hatch Inn <\/b>became an inn during the<br \/>\n<b>18<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/b>, when it was known as the <b><i>\u201cCock.\u201d <\/i><\/b>It was later renamed<br \/>\nthe <b>Hatch<\/b>, at <b>Coleman&#8217;s Gate<\/b>, which is one of the gates, or \u201cHatches&#8221; that<br \/>\nlead onto <b>Ashdown Forest. <\/b>The inn is one of several in the area, and the allure<br \/>\nof this low, dark building nestled into the landscape, contributes to the<br \/>\nallure of this atmospheric old inn. <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhXOk97B8RX3RKfx4K_9QGsHLYvnnWM-Yu8bC78AQMOLPIJUbesHUEvxzE6Osiv3yE2QWC4KrExR2TsuPT1SAV7AVZ9BOilrIZcr3Hf14lZIuGtq3K5VYdLhPI3nU1cPXy77WwpoJZZ-CXO3Xqdicg0VBaH3_jovNKGXQbrnbFVsRkmT1EAiWDow3CdtCM\/s3882\/Hatch%20Inn%20bar.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2185\" data-original-width=\"3882\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhXOk97B8RX3RKfx4K_9QGsHLYvnnWM-Yu8bC78AQMOLPIJUbesHUEvxzE6Osiv3yE2QWC4KrExR2TsuPT1SAV7AVZ9BOilrIZcr3Hf14lZIuGtq3K5VYdLhPI3nU1cPXy77WwpoJZZ-CXO3Xqdicg0VBaH3_jovNKGXQbrnbFVsRkmT1EAiWDow3CdtCM\/w400-h225\/Hatch%20Inn%20bar.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The <b>Hatch Inn<\/b> has earned numerous accolades, featuring in <b>The Good Pub Guide, AA Best Pubs, AA Best Pub Food, Country Life Magazine, Time<br \/>\nOut Magazine,<\/b> and the <b>Daily Telegraph&#8217;s Best of British Pubs, <\/b>among others,<br \/>\nwhich perhaps explains its upmarket reputation. So, whether it\u2019s a gentle stroll before lunch or<br \/>\na more challenging trek to build your appetite for an evening meal, the Forest<br \/>\noffers a diverse range of fauna and flora, heathland and forest. However, not all buses are equipped with<br \/>\nthese features, and some that do have them may not have them switched on. As we approached the church at <b>Coleman\u2019s Hatch, <\/b>I recognised it was time<br \/>\nfor me to get off. I pressed the button, and the bus came to a halt\u2014not too<br \/>\nabruptly, although the driver still seemed slightly surprised. After leaving<br \/>\nthe bus, I crossed the road to check the return times. I realised then that I<br \/>\nwould not have much time at the pub, so determined to make the most of my<br \/>\nvisit, I headed up the hill towards the <b>Hatch Inn.<\/b> Although I could have<br \/>\nextended my visit and taken a later bus back, I was determined to visit at<br \/>\nleast one other pub before returning to <b>Tunbridge Wells.<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjbMAWr6dpTHaSrJXJI_aaw__V6MVfngUnygChH7SAaer0xFCN1Hqkn_su4JW4J29ORrI9k43-qB_8Hj8gQmM48d5geZfATxLBTLpM8spQEf89eL9VlzRCNaqcBvccCvrnN1lUBMJrGX_Bqd31LKObtflxJBaxACbmt6kYyMUOFMorMk1-cgc1frbOdx7s\/s3818\/360%20degrees.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"3818\" data-original-width=\"2149\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEjbMAWr6dpTHaSrJXJI_aaw__V6MVfngUnygChH7SAaer0xFCN1Hqkn_su4JW4J29ORrI9k43-qB_8Hj8gQmM48d5geZfATxLBTLpM8spQEf89eL9VlzRCNaqcBvccCvrnN1lUBMJrGX_Bqd31LKObtflxJBaxACbmt6kYyMUOFMorMk1-cgc1frbOdx7s\/w225-h400\/360%20degrees.jpg\" width=\"225\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>It was a warm and balmy summer\u2019s day as I walked up the hill and across<br \/>\nthe junction at the top, which was the point where, almost hidden on the other<br \/>\nside of the junction, was the <b>Hatch Inn<\/b>, peeping out from behind the trees and<br \/>\nlooking splendid in the late spring sunshine. The majority of customers were<br \/>\nsitting outside taking advantage of the sun at on it inside and ordered myself<br \/>\na pint of <b>360\u00b0 Double Act,<\/b> a <b>3.9%<\/b> abv pale ale, which certainly hit the spot,<br \/>\nafter my uphill walk. It was too nice to sit inside though, so after a quick nose<br \/>\naround to re-acquaint myself with the pub, I headed back outside and found a<br \/>\nseat at one of the tables.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-texttext\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: .35pt;\">I sat there enjoying my nice hoppy beer, along with the general ambience<br \/>\nof this quiet rural pub. Many of the customers seemed to be agricultural or forestry<br \/>\nworkers, who were no doubt celebrating the end of the working week &#8211; in the<br \/>\nbest way possible with a pint or two of refreshing beer. Unfortunately, I had<br \/>\nto rush my pint, despite not really wanting to, so after drinking up I headed<br \/>\nback down towards the church, at <b>Coleman\u2019s Hatch,<\/b> and the bus stop. I was left thinking that I needn\u2019t have rushed my<br \/>\npint, but also that I should have visited the <b>Gents,<\/b> before leaving. I was<br \/>\ntempted to get off a couple of stops before <b>Hartfield<\/b> and call in at the <b>Gallipot<br \/>\nInn<\/b>, an attractive little pub overlooking the <b>B2110<\/b>, but after seeing the<br \/>\nplace described as a bit of a &#8220;<b><i>gastropub&#8221;,<\/i><\/b> I decided to remain on the bus, and<br \/>\nstick with my original plan. This was to have my last pint at the good old <b><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dorset-arms.co.uk\/\">Dorset Arms,<\/a><\/u><\/b> which lies in the tiny hamlet of <b>Withyham<\/b>. That way, I\u2019d be a little<br \/>\ncloser to <b>Tunbridge Wells.<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgJBTpPFZ9VomZl4G40_dbFTPQZwhOjUN9GUyzo2bmInV314ILkpepZi4mGx62TTqduMIscN5R8UApmKP_Tyoiqewlr9uozn2lGfyk61gsBXzRxjpPUbWR8F-hvZ_WFr2ObOZ2j507eWYNMc3byXpuWZCtMNHcAJjD5jHweEdUQBwDtB7J9WzprCpV5Drw\/s3943\/Dorset%20Arms%20Sign.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"2260\" data-original-width=\"3943\" height=\"229\" src=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEgJBTpPFZ9VomZl4G40_dbFTPQZwhOjUN9GUyzo2bmInV314ILkpepZi4mGx62TTqduMIscN5R8UApmKP_Tyoiqewlr9uozn2lGfyk61gsBXzRxjpPUbWR8F-hvZ_WFr2ObOZ2j507eWYNMc3byXpuWZCtMNHcAJjD5jHweEdUQBwDtB7J9WzprCpV5Drw\/w400-h229\/Dorset%20Arms%20Sign.jpg\" width=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The <b>Dorset<\/b> is a pub I&#8217;ve known for a long time, as for many years it was<br \/>\n<b>Harvey\u2019s<\/b> <b><i>&#8220;show pub&#8221;. <\/i><\/b>However, it turns out the pub didn&#8217;t actually belong to the brewery,<br \/>\nbut was only leased to them. The real owners are <b>Buckhurst Estates<\/b>, as referenced<br \/>\nby the signs in front of the pub. To all intents and purposes, the <b>Dorse<\/b>t might<br \/>\nas well be a <b>Harvey\u2019s <\/b>pub, because as far as cask is concerned, their <b>Best<br \/>\nBitter,<\/b> plus the occasional season offering, are the only beers on sale. I rushed<br \/>\nin and promptly alarmed the barmaid by asking for directions to the toilet. My contemplation&#8217;s were interrupted by the appearance of a member<br \/>\nof the kitchen staff who was taking a break, following a busy shift. Her<br \/>\nappearance was quite fortuitous, as she gave me the <b>Wi-Fi <\/b>code for the pub. Fortunately, the bus driver saw me as he rounded the bed, so<br \/>\nthere was no need for any heroics on my part. It had been a good day out<br \/>\nvisiting these four fine, and largely unspoilt <b>Sussex pubs<\/b>, and it\u2019s an<br \/>\nexercise I wouldn\u2019t mind repeating. Next time I shall head a bit further west,<br \/>\nto take in <b>Forest Row<\/b> and <b>East Grinstead. <\/b>The <b>291 bus<\/b> dropped me in the centre of <b>Tunbridge Wells,<\/b> and I headed towards<br \/>\nthe <b>RVP<\/b> for, yet another pee stop.
