Of course we can\u2019t. And should we say others that were equally as qualified to produce a banner for our new nation\u00a0like\u00a0Francis Hopkinson? Only educated speculation remains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Here is why it simply doesn\u2019t matter. It doesn\u2019t matter because the overwhelming likelihood is that right up until the Continental Congress Resolution of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bensguide.gpo.gov\/j-american-flag#:~:text=American%20Flag:%201777%20*%20When%20Kentucky%20and,in%20Baltimore%2C%20Maryland%2C%20on%20July%204%2C%201960.\" target=\"_blank\">1777\u200a<\/a>\u2014\u200athe citizens under those thirteen colonies lived, worked, and fought under a number of different\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.battlefields.org\/learn\/articles\/short-history-united-states-flag#:~:text=During%20this%20time%2C%20other%20flags,suggested%20a%20five%2Dpointed%20star.\" target=\"_blank\">banners<\/a>. And it doesn\u2019t matter because no matter what standard they fought under\u200a\u2014\u200aAmericans did the unthinkable. They forced the British Empire into frustration, defeat, and finally surrender\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/today-in-history\/october-19\/#:~:text=Surrender%20at%20Yorktown-,Surrender%20at%20Yorktown,The%20World%20Turned%20Upside%20Down%E2%80%9D.\" target=\"_blank\">when<\/a>\u00a0Lord Cornwallis was pushed to the sea near a place called\u00a0Yorktown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">What we do know is that with no federal government for the United States governing these 13 colonies during the Revolution\u200a\u2014\u200ait\u2019s almost certain that Americans lived, worked, and fought under a variety of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/item\/today-in-history\/october-19\/#:~:text=Surrender%20at%20Yorktown-,Surrender%20at%20Yorktown,The%20World%20Turned%20Upside%20Down%E2%80%9D.\" target=\"_blank\">banners<\/a>. Dr. Benjamin Franklin had even suggested at one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fotw.info\/flags\/us-gu.html#:~:text=States%20of%20America-,About%20the%20flag,to%20%22a%20new%20constellation.%22\" target=\"_blank\">point<\/a>\u00a0during an oration that the East India Company Flag should be America\u2019s banner. It was December of 1775 when John Paul Jones famously raised a variant of the \u201cStars and Stripes\u201d in the Delaware River aboard the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/affordableflagpoles.com\/us-flag-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">ship<\/a>\u00a0<em>Alfred.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">On January 1st, 1776 near General George Washington\u2019s headquarters on Prospect Hill\u200a\u2014\u200athe Continental Army had a flag\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration:underline\">raising<\/span>\u00a0ceremony. The controversy is over\u00a0<em>what<\/em>\u00a0flag was actually raised. And then we have the \u201cAppeal to Heaven\u201d flag that made headlines last\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/alito-supreme-court-flags-history-symbol-protest-a5415aeba90e21a86a50f8489fc54b7a\" target=\"_blank\">summer<\/a>. Designed by a member of General George Washington\u2019s Staff\u200a\u2014\u200aColonel Joseph Reed in 1775\u200a\u2014\u200aand flown after the capture of a British ship by Commodore Samuel Tucker and was also utilized by the Massachusetts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/content\/dam\/nhhc\/research\/publications\/naval-documents-of-the-american-revolution\/NDARVolume8.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">State<\/a>\u00a0Navy. Reed\u2019s six schooner\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountvernon.org\/library\/digitalhistory\/digital-encyclopedia\/article\/joseph-reed#:~:text=Joseph%20Reed.,governor%29%20from%201778%20to%201781.\" target=\"_blank\">where<\/a>\u00a0America\u2019s first Navy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">And when the resolution was finally adopted by the Continental Congress in June of 1777\u200a\u2014\u200adoes it really matter who was the creator of the flag that they designated for our nation? Or whether the story of Ross being asked by Washington to sew America\u2019s first official standard\u200a\u2014\u200atold by her grandson starting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/postalmuseum.si.edu\/exhibition\/long-may-it-wave-the-evolution-of-the-american-flag\/the-legend-of-betsy-ross#:~:text=In%201870%2C%20William%20J.,Library%20of%20Congress%20to%20proceed.\" target=\"_blank\">around<\/a>\u00a01870\u200a\u2014\u200ais actually fact? No, it does not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">As the decades rolled on and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drpa.org\/bridges\/betsy-ross-bridge.asp\" target=\"_blank\">bridge<\/a>\u00a0was named in her honor and her house\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/historicphiladelphia.org\/betsy-ross-house\/visit\/\" target=\"_blank\">became<\/a>\u00a0a tourist attraction\u200a\u2014\u200ait didn\u2019t matter so much how historians waffled on the accuracy of the Betsy Ross story. But her importance as a fine colonial woman\u200a\u2014\u200aat the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshistory.org\/education-resources\/biographies\/betsy-ross\" target=\"_blank\">height<\/a>\u00a0of her craft\u200a\u2014\u200awilling to do all that she could for America in the midst of it\u2019s Revolutionary period is all that matters. This March\u200a\u2014\u200ado yourself a favor.
