He said that Putin \u201cobviously\u2009.\u2009.\u2009.\u2009wasn\u2019t going to go\u201d unless the US president was also in attendance. <\/p>\n<p>Trump had previously said he was open to taking a detour for the talks in Turkey, but decided not to after the Russian president made clear in the eleventh hour that he would not attend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe anything\u2019s going to happen, whether you like it or not, until he and I get together,\u201d Trump said on Thursday. \u201cBut we\u2019re going to have to get it solved because too many people are dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that a ceasefire could be reached if technical talks between Ukrainian and Russian negotiators in Istanbul could agree to one. The goal was \u201cto attempt at least the first steps towards de-escalation, the first steps towards ending the war \u2014 namely, a ceasefire\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Zelenskyy, who travelled to Ankara on Thursday, had previously offered to meet, but only with Putin.
