As the Nazis encroached on Czechoslovakia in 1938, the L\u00f6w-Beers fled. The Nazis seized the factory, converting it into a munitions plant and later a branch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.ushmm.org\/content\/en\/article\/gross-rosen\">Gross-Rosen<\/a> concentration camp.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel L\u00f6w-Beer, the grandson of the factory\u2019s last Jewish owner, set up the <a href=\"https:\/\/arksfoundation.net\/\">Arks Foundation<\/a> in 2019 and spearheaded the effort to purchase the building and turn it into a site of memory.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"video\">\n<div class=\"embedly-plugin\" data-type=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-image\">\n<p>Making a Museum<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-thumbnail\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/V4qJLtffvvY\/maxresdefault.jpg\" data-video-id=\"V4qJLtffvvY\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>  <iframe width=\"854\" src=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" id=\"player\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay\"><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe had to flee for our lives, lost a bit of our history, so putting a little bit of history back to a place and hopefully bringing out as well the history of Oskar Schindler and the village is what we\u2019re doing today,\u201d L\u00f6w-Beer tells the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/czech-schindler-factory-museum-brnenec-holocaust-jewish-b64fae35a2ea48bfbacbd849314ae7ae\">Associated Press<\/a>\u2019 Karel Janicek.<\/p>\n<p>At the opening weekend, L\u00f6w-Beer was joined by hundreds of guests, including descendants of Jews whom Schindler is credited with saving. \u201cThis is a place for education, to learn about our parents and how they lived,\u201d Hadassa Bau, the daughter of survivor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnaibrith.org\/the-incredible-story-of-joseph-and-rebecca-bau\/\">Joseph Bau<\/a>, tells <a href=\"https:\/\/tvpworld.com\/86665433\/schindlers-list-factory-opens-as-museum-of-survivors-in-czech-republic-\">TVP World<\/a>\u2019s Alex Webber.<\/p>\n<p>While Schindler was born in Svitavy, a town just north of Brnenec, he spent much of the war running an <a href=\"https:\/\/muzeumkrakowa.pl\/en\/branches\/oskar-schindlers-enamel-factory\">enamel factory<\/a> in Krakow, Poland, which employed Polish Jews who lived in the <a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.ushmm.org\/content\/en\/article\/krakow-cracow\">Krakow Ghetto<\/a> and were later imprisoned in the <a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.ushmm.org\/content\/en\/article\/plaszow\">Krakow-Plaszow<\/a> concentration camp.<\/p>\n<p>As the Soviet Red Army collapsed the Nazi\u2019s Eastern Front in 1944, Schindler\u2019s clout as a member of the Nazi Party and an agent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/the-abwehr\">Abwehr<\/a>, the German military-intelligence service, allowed him to shift his operations\u2014along with a list of 1,000 Jewish prisoners he employed\u2014to Brnenec. His list of names likely saved those Jews from mass murder at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/the-daring-polish-resistance-fighter-who-volunteered-to-be-sent-to-auschwitz-so-he-could-sabotage-the-nazi-death-camp-from-the-inside-180986559\/\">Auschwitz-Birkenau<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After the Soviets liberated Brnenec, the Jewish survivors presented Schindler with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2016-05-02\/schindlers-ring-model-donated-to-jewish-museum\/7375796\">golden ring<\/a> created out of melted-down gold from their teeth. It bore an inscription paraphrased from the Talmud: \u201cWhoever saves one life saves the world entire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schindler\u2019s actions earned him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yadvashem.org\/\">Yad Vashem<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yadvashem.org\/righteous.html\">Righteous Among the Nations<\/a> medal and formed the basis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Thomas-Keneally\">Thomas Keneally<\/a>\u2019s 1982 historical novel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Schindlers-Ark-Thomas-Keneally\/dp\/0340936290?&amp;linkCode=sl1&amp;tag=smithsonianco0f-20&amp;linkId=077bfe027c77661476e6c4e38e525fea&amp;language=en_US&amp;ref_=as_li_ss_tl\"><em>Schindler<\/em><em>\u2019s Ark<\/em><\/a>, which in turn inspired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/the-making-of-steven-spielberg-180981184\/\">Steven Spielberg<\/a>\u2019s 1993 movie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/how-schindlers-list-transformed-americans-understanding-of-the-holocaust-180983408\/\"><em>Schindler\u2019s List<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"article-image \">\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/th-thumbnailer.cdn-si-edu.com\/spLpTj7ngBs9YWDjOMWPEcstVq8=\/fit-in\/1072x0\/filters:focal(750x486:751x487)\/https:\/\/tf-cmsv2-smithsonianmag-media.s3.amazonaws.com\/filer_public\/5d\/8a\/5d8ab9a9-dff8-4833-a16c-0ff65ba0083e\/brnonec067-20221112.jpeg\" alt=\"exterior 3\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>      Before it was purchased by Daniel L\u00f6w-Beer and his Arks Foundation in 2019, the factory had fallen into disrepair after decades of neglect.<\/p>\n<p>      <span class=\"credit\">The Arks Foundation<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Margaret Keneally, the author\u2019s daughter, was in attendance at the recent ceremony, and on behalf of her father, she delivered three documents for inclusion in the museum\u2019s collections: original transcripts of interviews her father conducted with survivors; documents relating to the trial and execution of Krakow-Plaszow commandant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Amon-Goth\">Amon G\u00f6th<\/a>; and portions of the original, hand-typed manuscript of her father\u2019s book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the story he told will be here, and this place is an important part of continuing to tell that story,\u201d she said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/english.radio.cz\/schindlers-factory-holocaust-memorial-museum-survivors-officially-opens-brnenec-8850859\">Radio Prague International<\/a>\u2019s Danny Bate and Barbora Soukupov\u00e1.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the ceremony, the Museum of Survivors is still a work in progress, and it doesn\u2019t yet have regular visitation hours.
