One powerful group of stakeholders, corporations, has a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/publications\/guidingprinciplesbusinesshr_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> clear responsibility<\/a> to fight back, but many are just standing around twiddling their thumbs.<\/p>\n<p>One case in point is Mondel\u0113z International, the $87 billion snacking giant behind Oreo cookies. Mondel\u0113z has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mondelezinternational.com\/snacking-made-right\/esg-topics\/human-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">glossy<\/a> human rights policy, yet it routinely receives the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/kfs-scorecard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> lowest scores<\/a> on our yearly deforestation and human rights scorecard.<\/p>\n<p>In part, it\u2019s because Mondel\u0113z lacks a zero-tolerance policy safeguarding<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/special-procedures\/sr-human-rights-defenders\/about-human-rights-defenders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> human rights defenders<\/a>\u2014the activists fighting to make human rights a reality around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Defenders are an integral part of advancing human rights globally, especially in places that lack strong enforcement mechanisms. They\u2019re a diverse group of people combating discrimination, labor abuses, environmental exploitation, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, they\u2019re the frequent target of attacks. Land and environmental defenders face heavy persecution, in particular: In 2023, three people were killed <a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/09092024\/appalling-figures-at-least-three-environmental-defenders-killed-per-week-in-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">every week<\/a> for speaking out against things like pollution, deforestation, and extractive industries.<\/p>\n<p>Agribusinesses, including soy, cacao, and palm oil producers\u2014major Mondel\u0113z snack ingredients\u2014are among the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ran.org\/press-releases\/global-consumer-brands-lag-on-deforestation-human-rights-protections-in-2024-keep-forests-standing-scorecard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> top<\/a> culprits behind these attacks against defenders.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Mondel\u0113z hasn\u2019t committed to a zero-tolerance policy against such attacks.
