The proposal eliminates the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) entirely and reduces support for the National Park Service (NPS) by hundreds of millions of dollars. This is just the latest attack on the federal agencies that help America\u2019s history community thrive.<\/p>\n<p>While this budget proposal is concerning, it\u2019s just that: a proposal. Congress holds the \u201cpower of the purse.\u201d Use the following links to ask your representatives in Congress to support\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congressweb.com\/aam\/84\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>IMLS<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congressweb.com\/aam\/87\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NEH<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/act.npca.org\/page\/82683\/action\/1?_ga=2.24988666.1164263610.1746498827-111894371.1744905565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NPS<\/strong><\/a>. Our field has successfully mobilized against such proposed cuts before, and we can do it again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact Congress: Don\u2019t Increase Tax Burden on Nonprofits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Congress is working on a tax bill to extend the tax cuts that were enacted in 2017. These cuts would greatly increase the federal debt. To reduce this increase, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philanthropy.com\/article\/five-alarm-fire-how-new-tax-law-could-decimate-nonprofits-and-what-can-be-done\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Congress is considering a number of proposals<\/strong><\/a> that would impose taxes on nonprofits or significantly limit the types of organizations that would qualify for nonprofit status. If enacted, these proposals would negatively impact any history organization designated as a nonprofit, including AASLH.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/asaecenter.quorum.us\/campaign\/122933\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Use this form<\/strong><\/a> to urge your Congressional delegation to oppose these proposals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell Us about Grant Cancellations and Reinstatements<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, we are hearing reports from history organizations of ongoing federal grant cancellations and, in some cases, grant reinstatements. AASLH is working to gain a clearer picture of how executive actions are impacting the field.
