The way we talk to ourselves, and to others, has the power to build confidence, foster connection, and lead teams. Or the words we use can totally derail a day.<\/span><\/p>\n People remember what you say, even when you don\u2019t. A quick \u201cYou\u2019ve got this\u201d can stick with someone for weeks. So can a sideways comment like \u201cWe\u2019ll see if you can handle it.\u201d The words we choose can either open possibilities or plant seeds of doubt.<\/span><\/p>\n And words don\u2019t only impact your leadership in the workplace. You\u2019re a leader every time someone looks to you for guidance, whether you\u2019re managing a team, raising a child, mentoring a colleague, or navigating a grade school sports team group chat.<\/span><\/p>\n Pay Attention to the Words in Your Head<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Some of the most powerful words we encounter aren\u2019t spoken out loud, it\u2019s the internal commentary that runs nonstop in our own minds. The words we use to describe ourselves, \u201cI\u2019m not a leader,\u201d \u201cI always mess this up,\u201d \u201cI\u2019m just not that kind of person\u201d <\/em>– shape how we show up. And often, we say things to ourselves we\u2019d never dream of saying to a friend. The challenge is to become aware of that inner dialogue and ask: Is this voice helping me grow? Or keeping me small?<\/em> Rewriting our internal script with language that\u2019s truthful and<\/em> encouraging isn\u2019t just a mindset shift, it\u2019s a leadership skill.<\/span><\/p>\n Be Mindful of Your Language<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Being mindful doesn\u2019t mean obsessing over every syllable. It means not<\/em> operating on autopilot. It means pausing to notice:<\/span><\/p>\n For example, when you catch yourself saying \u201cI\u2019m just not a confident person,\u201d ask\u2014Is that true? Or is it something I\u2019ve been rehearsing for years?<\/em> That little pause can make all the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n Our brains are sneaky, and they love efficiency, so they recycle old thoughts and phrases, even when those words and phrases no longer accurately reflect our circumstances and no longer serve us. Mindfulness is about interrupting that loop and making more intentional choices.<\/span><\/p>\n Use Words Constructively<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Constructive language is more than just \u201cbeing nice.\u201d It\u2019s about being clear, specific, and oriented toward progress. When giving feedback or motivating your team (or your kids to do literally anything<\/em>), ask yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n Constructive communication doesn\u2019t mean sugarcoated. It means thoughtful. It\u2019s the difference between \u201cThis isn\u2019t working\u201d and \u201cHere\u2019s what we need to adjust to get better results.\u201d One leaves people stuck with a problem. The other gives them a way forward.<\/span><\/p>\n Be Authentic (But Not Automatic)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n You can be intentional and<\/em> real. Being authentic with your words means telling the truth, but in a way that\u2019s responsible and aligned with your values. You don\u2019t have to slap a motivational quote on a hard situation, but you also don\u2019t need to default to sarcasm or negativity just because it may be easier.<\/span><\/p>\n Authenticity means choosing honesty with care, <\/em>owning your experience without making assumptions about others’. It means using your voice in a way that reflects who you are at your best<\/em>, not just who you are when you’re tired and undercaffeinated.<\/span><\/p>\n Take Responsibility for Your Communication<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Let\u2019s be honest: no one is a perfect communicator. We\u2019ve all sent a vague email, spoken too quickly in a meeting, or tried to clarify something and only made it more confusing (shoutout to every \u201cquick clarification\u201d that turned into a TED Talk).<\/span><\/p>\n But responsible communication means owning your impact.<\/em> It\u2019s recognizing that what you meant<\/em> to say isn\u2019t always what someone heard.<\/em> It\u2019s being open to rephrasing, listening, and checking in, not just pushing through and hoping for the best.<\/span><\/p>\n And if you’re leading others, this matters even more. Your words shape family, team, and firm culture. They influence motivation, trust, and the safety people perceive that allows them to speak up. Take the time to get your words right.<\/span><\/p>\n Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n This isn\u2019t about striving for linguistic perfection. It\u2019s about using language on purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n Because words are not just a reflection of what you believe, they are also reinforcers<\/em> of belief. When you say something often enough, you (and others) start to live like it\u2019s true.<\/span><\/p>\n So, ask yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n Whether you’re leading a team, leading a family, or just trying to lead yourself through another Monday, choose words that create space, inspire action, and reflect who you\u2019re becoming.<\/span><\/p>\n Speak with intention. Lead with clarity.
