The store is the third Starbucks location in the state of Alabama to unionize, and a representative of the union told APR it is the 586th store to unionize nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really want to express how grateful I am for all the community support that we\u2019ve gotten,\u201d barista Briar Wolf emphasized during a phone call yesterday. She said people who have boycotted Starbucks \u201cfor years\u201d began coming to the Huntsville store and telling management they would patronize a union store.<\/p>\n<p>The election, Briar explained, was supervised by representatives of the National Labor Relations Board with observers from both the union and the company present. No ballots were contested by either party\u2019s observers.<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks spokesperson Phil Gee said Starbucks \u201crespect our partners right to choose, through a fair and democratic process, to be represented by a union or not to be represented by a union, and will continue to work together to make Starbucks the best job in retail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Briar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/04\/29\/huntsville-starbucks-workers-file-for-a-union-election\/\">told APR<\/a> she was expecting two people to vote against unionizing. She explained in the post-election phone call that she believes those two coworkers were \u201cscared [by management] that they\u2019re gonna lose opportunities at promotion,\u201d while noting she\u2019ll never actually know if her prediction was accurate because union elections have secret ballots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u200aI don\u2019t blame them. I really don\u2019t. Gotta get that bag, you know,\u201d she joked. Briar then emphasized there won\u2019t be any ill will going forward as the union prepares to elect the bargaining delegate that will represent the store during the union\u2019s ongoing contract negotiation.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to electing a delegate, she told APR the workers might begin planning to participate in the union\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SBWorkersUnited\/status\/1922022424825966649\">protest of the new Starbucks dress code<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201c\u200aThe main concern about the dress code is a lot of people that work at Starbucks don\u2019t have the money to go out and buy new clothes,\u201d Briar said. Birmingham Starbucks worker and SBWU member Naomi also told APR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alreporter.com\/2025\/04\/21\/birmingham-starbucks-workers-describe-a-concerted-anti-union-campaign\/\">in April<\/a> she feels the new dress code clashes with the company\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks <a href=\"https:\/\/about.starbucks.com\/stories\/2025\/updating-our-dress-code-for-a-more-consistent-coffeehouse-experience\/\">has said<\/a> it will provide two company-branded shirts at no cost to employees, but Briar said she\u2019s going to need a new pair of comfortable, dress code-compliant shoes, too, \u200aand \u201c\u200acan\u2019t afford a new pair of shoes right now. Like, it\u2019s not in my budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years, Starbucks sold things on an online marketplace called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starbuckscoffeegear.com\/\">Coffeegear<\/a> that were sold as being dress code compliant,\u201d Briar complained. \u201cAnd suddenly most of those things are no longer dress code compliant after people spend money, paid money to Starbucks, to get clothing that was supposed to be dress code compliant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gee stated that \u201chourly partners receive pay above industry average and best-in-class benefits, together worth an average of $30 per hour for those who work at least 20 hours per week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wages though are only just above half of that $30 figure at an average of $18 per hour according to <a href=\"https:\/\/about.starbucks.com\/press\/2024\/message-from-sara-kelly-starbucks-update-on-bargaining\/\">past statements<\/a> from the company. Several union supporters have also spoken to APR in the past about an inability to work as many hours as they would like.<\/p>\n<p>As a show of solidarity, Birmingham barista Naomi traveled to the Huntsville store on Monday. \u201c\u200aI work in Birmingham, but they have the exact same problems that I have out there,\u201d she told APR. \u201cReally, working with this team has been finding like new friends, new community, and I benefit from being around them and, you know, all we can do is celebrate together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi says her coworkers in Birmingham have been \u201c\u200ahella excited\u201d by the union\u2019s organizing campaign and Monday\u2019s victory. \u201cI think people are really, really excited and this win just kind of confirms that we\u2019re all thinking in the right place,\u201d she enthused.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<div class=\"zox-post-ad-wrap\"><span class=\"zox-ad-label\">Advertisement. Scroll to continue reading.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Additionally, both Naomi and Briar individually told APR they\u2019re hoping this latest victory for the union will help spur further organizing in Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>Naomi said \u201cthis is just the beginning for Starbucks Workers United in Alabama,\u201d and asserted that \u201cthere are so many stores that need representation, and it\u2019s only gonna be a matter of time before they realize that they\u2019re stronger together than they are advocating for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really hoping that other stores here in Huntsville and then across the state and the region here see that we can do this even in the South,\u201d Briar said. \u201cWe can organize unions and we can demand to be treated fairly and equitably.
