As neither studio was known for owning music publishing houses, they had no incentives for plugging the songs, unlike the situations at Warner, MGM, and Paramount. Thus, Columbia was able to put some fairly recent hits into their cartoons, without entire reliance upon old or public domain chestnuts or original numbers. Fox could have allowed Paul Terry to use their musical materials, but (except in one rare instance where “On the Good Ship Lollipop” appeared in a Farmer Alfalfa amateur night broadcast), the ever-parsimonious Terry wouldn’t think about it.

Football Bugs (4/29/36) – A lot of standard “The Big Game” tropes, washed down with some kind of adult beverage by a fan, who is also eager to share his brew with the star bench warmer, who becomes the hero. These tropes have been going around largely since the early days of sound. Song: “Beetles’ College Song”, an original that sounds like every other college fight song you’ve ever heard.

The Untrained Seal (7/26/36) – Mostly the sort of gags one would expect in a cartoon set in the arctic. An overly-proud Germanic papa seal finds that of his latest litter (4 girls, one boy), the boy cannot catch fish in the usual way. He does ultimately manage to snag a catch by raising a frozen fountain, and it is soon raining fish. A vocal chorus tells us that the son will ultimately become a circus seal, and thus make his father proud. Song: No obvious title to it, but a narrative verse that exposes the situation.

Highway Snobbery (8/9/36) – Krazy Kat and Kitty are driving around in their fancy car, and apparently quite recklessly. Other drivers who are enjoying a Sunday drive seem to think that KK is being a road hog. Curiously, when KK sings in this carton, he sings in a very mature baritone voice. Songs: Joe De Nat returns to Tin Pan Alley for the songs of this cartoon, both of which originated in Fox musicals. So Mintz had to pay royalties on “Gather Lip Rouge While You May” and “Ha-Cha-Cha”. The first was from a musical called “My Lips Betray”, a film that hasn’t been seen much since 1933 (and may only exist in a restoration at UCLA), written by Buddy De Silva, Leo Robin, and Richard Whiting (Margaret’s pop). We don’t know which one of the film’s stars performed it, but possibly Lillian Harvey, an English actress and singer who became very popular in late-Weimar Germany. Don Bestor got the song on Victor, Fran Frey (the main singer for George Olsen’s orchestra), with a Ben Selvin studio group, issued a royal blue Columbia. Joe Venuti got it on Melotone, Perfect, et al., also issued on English Decca. Bill Scotti recorded it for Bluebird, possibly concurrently issued as Sunrise and very late Electra-Disk. Richard Himber and his Essex House Orchestra covered it for Vocalion. “Ha-Cha-Cha” was a 1934 pop song which appeared in the Fox musical “Caravan”. It was recorded by Rudy Vallee and his Connecticut Yankees on Victor, and by Joe Reichman on a “Medley from Caravan” which appeared on Oriole and the dime store labels.

The Novelty Shop (8/15/36) – This is an interesting take on the “Midnight in a toy shop” type of cartoon, set in a novelty shop – a type of store that doesn’t seem to exist anymore. The owner, who can barely walk himself, leaves and closes up shop. One of the pieces of merchandise rushes to tell the others that the boss has gone, and it’s time to frolic and revel. They do, until someone notices the owner is coming back to the store. All of the merchandise scampers to return to their original positions. Only a Stan Laurel look-alike is unable to obtain his original post, when it is taken and he is knocked away by one of the three good monkeys. Songs: two originals, or possibly two parts of the same number: “The Boss Is Going Home”, and “The Boss Is Coming Back”. Finally, Margie and Scrappy take in a night spot for some of the local color and festiveness of the city. Song: “Neapolitan Nights”, a song that has a curious history. Written by J. S. Zamecnik in 1921 as “Somewhere In Italy”, with one recording under the title as a dance record on Cameo by the Caroliners, and I believe from memory also on Edison though I am unsure of the performing orchestra. It was rewritten as a waltz in 1925, renamed by its presently-known title, and recorded by Don Clark and his La Monica Ballroom Orchestra on Victor (believed to be recorded in the Shrine Auditorium). It was then recorded for Columbia the next year by Cole McElroy and his Spanish Ballroom Orchestra (a “Spanish” band plating a tune about Italy in Portland, Oregon!). Nathan Glantz issued a version for Perfect. Finally, the song got interpolated into a 1927 part-talkie desert adventure, “Fazil” for Fox. James Melton got an electrical vocal that year for Columbia. Versions appeared on Harmony, Diva, and Velvet Tone by Ernie Golden’s Orchestra (embed below – a good seller for its, flip, a cover version of “Sonny Boy” with vocal by Arthur Fields). The Victor Salon Orchestra performed it for their name label. The Troubadours (a house band specializing in waltzes) performed it on Victor. Jack Denny and his Orchestra, then playing in New York, got the Brunswick version. Kalama’s Quartette (a Hawaiian group with two steel guitars) gave it their own treatment on Okeh. A Victor electric appeared as “Venetian Orchestra: on the “Continental Gems” numerical series (release number V-6), probably performed by an Alfredo Cibelli studio group aimed at a general international audience. A much later performance appeared on Capitol by Jo Stafford and Gordon MacRae. Ken Griffin as usual performed a 50’s version on Rondo. Russ Morgan performed a late Decca under the retitling “Nights of Splendor”. Frankie Yankovic broke out from his usual Slovenian repertoire on Columbia.

The Merry Mutineers (10/2/36) – Scrappy and Oopie (maybe Oopie’s only appearance in Technicolor) are playing pirate, with model galleons they set afloat in the same pond. Each craft is manned by a miniature crew of celebrity caricatures, including but not limited to Bing Crosby, Charles Laughton, the Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, Wallace Beery, Fred Astaire, Joe E. Brown, George Arliss, W. C. Fields, Jimmy Durante. and possibly a trio of Shirley Temples (although maybe they were attempting to display Columbia’s own answer to Shirley Temple, Edith Fellows). The heated battle between the vessels turns out to be something of a draw, and members of the rival crews start to take on and interchange facial features and demeanors at will (Beery transforming into Hardy, Astaire into Laurel, etc.) Songs: two originals: “We’re the Merry Mutineers”, and “We Sail the Deep Blue Sea”, the latter of which seems as if Joe De Nat is attempting to channel Gilbert and Sullivan.

Krazy’s News Reel (10/24/36) – Newsreels were full of cliches that were easily spoofable. At some studios, newsreels were the fallback position when the writers couldn’t come up with a story idea (i.e., Max Fleischer). This cartoon takes off on all of the standard tropes, including serious news, fashion reports, and comedy. Several of the prominent commentators of the day are mimicked, including Lowell Thomas and Lew Lehr, the latter of whom usually got the comic section of For Newsreels. Songs: two from Fox musicals: “Adorable”, from 1933, starring Janet Gaynor and Henri Garat, a French motion picture star. Freddy Martin may have gotten the only recording, issued for Perfect, Melotone, et al. under the name “Hotel Bossert Orchestra”, a hotel in Brooklyn where he played every night.

The other song is “Nasty Man”, from “George White’s Scandals of 1934″. The song was performed in the picture by Alice Faye, a new name at the time, who also recorded it for Melotone, Perfect, et al., but which recording remained an unissued side until an LP release. Frances Langford’s version for the same labels did see the light of day. Paul Hamilton (actually the Dorsey Brothers) covered for Vocalion. Rudy Vallee issued a Victor, with a female trio doing most of the vocalizing. Ray Noble issued an HMV side with Al Bowlly on vocal. Hubby leaves the house for awhile (presumably for work at some unknown occupation) while Wifey sets to her daily chores, including preparing a roast grasshopper for dinner. But the salesman returns, finally gaining entry, and presses his advantage be seizing the wife in an embrace. Neighborhood gossips spot the event, and soon the story is buzzing on the telephones all around town. Hubby returns, discovers the intruder, and a battle of fisticuffs ensues, with a good visual gag as Hubby lands a sock on the salesman’s chin. With each bounce the salesman takes on the floor, an ash can sprouts up under him – knocking him for a row of ash cans. The salesman is deposited outside, trapped in his own vacuum bag, and Hubby calms the tears of Wifey at her burnt roast by presenting her with a box of candy he had brought home. The shades are lowered for a night of romance, and the onlooking gossips blush red in embarrassment and lower their shades too. Song: For once, an actual song from a Columbia musical, One Night of Love starring Grace Moore.
