Amex to take away Membership Rewards points on Fuel Spends for Gold Charge Card<\/h2>\n

American Express is currently making several moves to slim down its card features. Some of these are to ensure that only the intended target segments have them, such as the Platinum Card adjustments<\/a> made last year. Today, they have announced another move for June 2025, which will be considered a trimming or devaluation in my book.\n<\/p>\n

American Express to kill points award for Fuel Spend on Gold Charge Card<\/h3>\n

In a move to segregate fuel spending and award it only on the higher-end card, American Express plans to discontinue another feature on the Gold Charge Card. So far, Amex has awarded 1 Membership Rewards point on every INR 50 spent on fuel, capped at 5,000 points per month. Effective June 12, 2025, this benefit will be discontinued.<\/p>\n

This proves to be a very competitive move for the American Express Platinum Card, given that most credit cards in India do not offer points earning on fuel, as they must pass the entire amount to the fuel company or pump, and hence, no margins for them in the first place.<\/p>\n

Effective June 1, 2021, you earn five Membership Rewards Point for every INR 100 spent on Fuel with a maximum of 5,000 Bonus Membership Rewards points per calendar month on the Platinum Card. This refers only to the Platinum Metal charge card and not to the Credit Card variants issued by Amex in India. There is no specific brand affiliation, which means you can buy fuel from Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, or the limited pumps of Shell and Reliance, among others, in India as well.<\/p>\n

The 5,000 additional points bonus means there is room to spend up to INR 1,25,000 on fuel per month and receive the bonus in full, which should be more than enough for a few full tanks per month in a household.<\/p>\n

Bottomline<\/h3>\n

Effective June 12, 2025, you will no longer earn points on fuel purchases with the Gold Card from American Express. Currently, on the Platinum Card only, you can earn points for fuel. This, in my opinion, is to distinguish the features between the Gold and Platinum Cards.<\/p>\n
