The spotted comb jelly is so fragile a creature, just waving your hand through the water could destroy it. Now, for the first time anywhere, our animal care staff have managed to culture these fragile, scintillating creatures.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/5a53abd1feaeb7a3912728867939d215\/tumblr_inline_p4ffz8fEl21qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Several of the newly hatched jellies are now on public display. It\u2019s the latest advance in comb jelly science from our husbandry team.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/b9859ace48bb2a9ad7dc3753b808e5e7\/tumblr_inline_p4fg0fIZaS1qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The species, known scientifically as <i>Leucothea pulchra<\/i>\u2014Latin for \u201cbeautiful sea goddess\u201d<i>\u2014<\/i>is \u201ca clear football-shaped gelatinous animal\u201d says Wyatt Patry, a senior aquarist who\u2019s worked at the Aquarium for 11 years, and who led the culturing effort this winter.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/fe5be25da258720a3ff72bb801cf9b27\/tumblr_inline_p4ffuufGX61qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re ctenophores, not true jellyfish,\u201d Wyatt notes. \u201cInstead of stinging cells they have sticky cells called colloblasts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spotted comb jelly\u2019s common name refers to orange \u201cknobs\u201d or spots along its body.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/6ea8c11825e741f06ecc4fb70a7c3cd7\/tumblr_inline_p4fg1sacde1qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know what those do but we suspect they aid in prey capture,\u201d Wyatt says. Two sticky tentacles trail behind it, acting like fishing lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey also have cool whips called \u2018auricles\u2019 that they wave around\u2014undulate\u2014in this really cool slow wave motion, probably driving food into their mouths,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"500\" data-orig-height=\"281\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/8cbd979151edd3b900c88e9d89cbe795\/tumblr_inline_p4ffoiOndc1qk45js_500.gifv\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"500\" data-orig-height=\"281\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey are voracious predators\u2014kind of top of the food chain as far as plankton goes,\u201d eating small crustaceans like copepods, mysid shrimp and krill, Wyatt says. They also feast on pelagic worms and larval fish. The team was also surprised to discover that \u201cthey will happily eat other jellies. That was something that we did not know.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1365\" data-orig-height=\"2048\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/a576e8e2e1aabac135363b7652fb1d9a\/tumblr_inline_p4fg3ajt5P1qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1365\" data-orig-height=\"2048\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><i>Baby Leucothea sometimes look Optimus Prime crying rainbow tears.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>\u2018Barely organized water\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Spotted comb jellies are not endangered, and range from Baja California north to British Columbia. But seeing them in an aquarium is a rare treat, because their extreme fragility makes handling them a dicey proposition.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"498\" data-orig-height=\"280\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/43b6fe6936eb477699f68ca836c6d4d8\/tumblr_inline_p4ffpjaT8I1qk45js_500.gifv\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"498\" data-orig-height=\"280\" width=\"498\" height=\"280\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><i>Trailing tentacles and whiplike auricles help these comb jellies capture their prey.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Wild specimens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jellyfish-fragile-beauty\/\">first went on exhibit in Monterey in 2002<\/a>, as part of the special exhibition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/Art-imitates-sea-life-in-Jellies-Unique-show-2854544.php%22%20%5Ct%20%22_blank\">\u201cJellies: Living Art.\u201d<\/a> On rare occasions, and for brief periods, they\u2019ve returned to the exhibit galleries.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1365\" data-orig-height=\"2048\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/fa10cb1833a3003cb4d789684fd48e53\/tumblr_inline_p4fg6nxnjw1qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1365\" data-orig-height=\"2048\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Wyatt calls them \u201ca contender for the most delicate animal on Earth.\u201d Another researcher once described them as \u201cbarely organized water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To protect the easily broken beauties from perturbations, Wyatt says members of the team \u201chave to move like a sloth. In order to move them we\u2019ve got to get a beaker around them, and that has to be done very, very slowly. We try to get them to swim into the beaker so we don\u2019t have to disturb the water around them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Slow-motion exhibit maintenance<\/b><\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"498\" data-orig-height=\"280\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/23956ce25432144b9cca2d95f0d3dea4\/tumblr_inline_p4ffqmmqZ11qk45js_500.gifv\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"498\" data-orig-height=\"280\" width=\"498\" height=\"280\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Just wiping down the acrylic inside one of their holding tanks requires the slowest of motions; a task that would otherwise take only a couple minutes requires twenty.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Aquarist Wyatt Patry helped unlock the secrets of culturing comb jellies, including <i>Leucothea<\/i>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the wild, they take refuge at depths up to 300 feet below the surface, \u201cto get away from all the waves and the swells and commotion up above,\u201d Wyatt says. But they also show up in Monterey Bay in late fall, when surface waters are warm and calm.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1365\" data-orig-height=\"2048\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/a0e4f2c3caf09b21bb318a17c0daf88b\/tumblr_inline_p4fg93cPDe1qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1365\" data-orig-height=\"2048\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s where Kevin Lewand, the Aquarium\u2019s collector, found four adult <i>Leucothea<\/i> one Friday in early December. He brought them back to the Aquarium\u2019s Drifters Lab, where Wyatt set up a six-foot-tall tube designed on site for culturing ctenophores.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last two years, we\u2019ve really kind of excelled at comb jelly culture here at the Aquarium,\u201d Wyatt says, \u201cso we were really ready to receive and work with <i>Leucothea\u00a0<\/i>immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here he credits his partner Tommy Knowles, as well as Michael Howard and MacKenzie Bubel.<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/d70c4a5e61c39ee259f9023f3e7b44c9\/tumblr_inline_p4fgf7pTlq1qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Within days, the collected adults, which ranged from 12 to 18 inches long and are capable of self-fertilization, had spawned thousands of hatchlings, each half a millimeter in length\u2014a size easily mistaken for a mote of dust. Astonishingly, Wyatt says, \u201cwhen they hatch, they\u2019re ready to eat prey as big as they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Aquarium now has dozens of spotted comb jellies on hand. Some grew to four inches long in just two months.<\/p>\n<p><b>Inspired by Homer\u2019s \u2018Odyssey\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"1365\" data-orig-height=\"2048\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/bf9fd8ea455cc14cba82c7ff683592e0\/tumblr_inline_p4fgbwr7dL1qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"1365\" data-orig-height=\"2048\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>George Matsumoto <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/plankt\/article-abstract\/10\/2\/301\/1546825\">published the first official description<\/a> of <i>Leucothea pulchra <\/i>in 1988, though it was earlier described in 1931 in an unpublished master\u2019s thesis by Stanford student L.O. Stanford.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was named by the master\u2019s student, and in deference to her work, I kept the unpublished name,\u201d says George, a senior education and research specialist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. The name translates as \u201cbeautiful sea goddess.\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theoi.com\/Pontios\/Leukothea.html\">In Homer\u2019s \u201cOdyssey\u201d<\/a><i>, <\/i>Leukothea is a sea nymph who rescues Odysseus from drowning.)<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"498\" data-orig-height=\"280\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/79d82413fa79b1b4a080727f4f250650\/tumblr_inline_p4ffrpc4SS1qk45js_500.gifv\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"498\" data-orig-height=\"280\" width=\"498\" height=\"280\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Among his observations, George found some specimens with empty stomachs, some with just a few tiny crustaceans inside, others that had eaten worms, and one that had eaten dozens of tiny sea snails.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, it appears that they can be picky eaters, sorting out what each individual prefers,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>That the Aquarium has managed to culture the species is \u201camazing\u201d to George. \u201cI never had much luck keeping them in captivity for more than a day, so I\u2019m completely gobsmacked.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" class=\"tmblr-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/d9ada73346817476789bab11ee6a9326\/tumblr_inline_p4fggqnvsv1qk45js_1280.jpg\" alt=\"image\" data-orig-width=\"2048\" data-orig-height=\"1365\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>In more than 30 years, it\u2019s simply not something he ever thought would ever be likely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf asked about the possibility, I would\u2019ve estimated less than a 5 percent chance of success\u2014so kudos to the team,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Successfully culturing a species often opens the door to sharing subsequent generations of offspring with other public aquariums. But Wyatt, having gone to great lengths to put a few on display, doubts it\u2019s realistic in this case.
